Book Cover Contest – The Runners-Up!

So I’ve already shown you the cover for my upcoming book, Why Are You Atheists So Angry? 99 Things That Piss Off the Godless, designed by Casimir Fornalski. Here it is again, in case you’d forgotten:

But I got a lot of excellent submissions for my book cover contest. I hugely enjoyed seeing all the different visual spins people gave to this book: the variety is astonishing, and wildly entertaining. And I think all the designers deserve recognition and attention for the work they put into their submissions.

So here, as promised, is the gallery of the runners-up. Designers are being credited as they’ve asked to be credited — with real names, pseudyonyms, first names only, or anonymously — and with Websites and/or contact information, or not, as they’ve requested. Enjoy the gallery of godless rage!

And once again, my heartfelt thanks go out to all the designers who submitted cover art to this contest. I was very impressed by the quality of submissions, and was genuinely touched by the time and work that clearly went into them. I’d originally said that the top five runners-up would get a free copy of the book; but I’ve now decided that I don’t want to have to pick just five, so everyone who submitted a cover for this contest is going to get a free copy, in whichever format they prefer. I only wish I could afford to do more. Thanks again!

    Nice work, everyone! :D

(Except I noticed the last one didn’t use the same subtitle as all the others… “ways to piss off” instead of “things that piss off”…?)

I liked a few of them. But I agree with your pick. I just can’t wait for this book to come out. I just read The Good News Club by Katherine Stewart. And I am full of fury. I know after I read your book my eyes will be on fire. And the religious wont stand a chance with me.

I liked several of them (particularly Zugswang’s and RM Guest’s submissions), but Mr Fornalski’s is probably best in its eye-catching, expressive simplicity. I believe you have chosen wisely.

It must have been a tough decision. I love all the various incarnations of Cartoon Greta.

I can see why it was hard to decide. Really great submissions. I especially like Angel López’ illustration. And congrats to Casimir!

Love them all, but the one you chose is my favourite.

wow, lots of great ones. I’d have hated to have had to choose. :)

Heh! I liked working on it. It filled my post exam free time quite nicely!

And I am quite willing to make mine a Creative Commons image so that others can use the graphic when they need it.

My favorites were # 10, 13, & 14. Having said that, the one that won is pretty good.

Wow, I did not notice that error until #1 pointed it out. *facepalm*

I think I’d have gone with the Angel Lopez cover — the woman with the umbrella, looking disgusted, trying to avoid the “raining Bibles”.

That is a perfect visual metaphor…

Without being negative, I’m not partial to the cover that was actually chosen. It looks like a cross between a Don Martin drawing and the cover art on O’Reilly/Yahoo Press computer books.

I personally prefer the first and last images shown, by Amanda Nelson and Zugswang respectively. I especially like how the last drawing captures the character in GC’s face.

I like the umbrella cover and the balloon one is funny too, because I just managed to think “why balloons?” before I noticed the hand with the needle.
Good submissions. You’ve been spoiled for choice.

Looking over all the here designs, I definitely see why Casimir’s was the best and most appropriate cover. All of the submissions are wonderfully done, and I was particularly impressed with the high level of detail in Angel’s submission, but the winning cover did one thing that the others did not, and it’s profound in its subtlety.

Rather than just communicating what we stand against, Mr. Fornalski’s cover shows what we most strongly support and defend. It is the core value that informs all our morals and our ethics, and at the end of the day, we despise the things we do because they are antithetical to rational thought, and these things are not limited to religion (although it certainly has more than its fair share of infuriating absurdities).

When someone asks why you believe or don’t believe in this or that, the simplest response is, “Because I’ve yet to find a good reason to do otherwise.”

So, yeah, I’d say it was a pretty good choice.

I just managed to think “why balloons?” before I noticed the hand with the needle.

I just thought “are there 99 red balloons?”

[nods] Yep, I gotta agree that Fornalski’s cover is pretty damned good—certainly much better than my “switchblade crucifix” idea, fer shure. Had I been in Greta’s shows, I think I’d have gone for López’ work… but that’s just a matter of personal preference. As far as the actual quality of the work is concerned, Fornalski is second to none, as the cliché goes.

The official one is the best, I have to say. It has an ineffable quality to it that I will, for the purpose of brevity, refer to as “awesome”.
