Dream diary, 11/21/09: Terrorist Pizza Party

Pizza I dreamed that I was having pizza with Iranian terrorists. A reporter friend of mine was doing a story on them; she was hiding them in her crawlspace, but they were thinking of coming out and revealing themselves in public. To encourage them to do this, she had a pizza party for them. Ingrid and I somehow got mixed up in this. I was uncertain how I felt about what my friend was doing, but mostly I was uncomfortable trying to make small talk, since the terrorists didn’t speak English very well.

Here’s a somewhat relevant and very cool link I’ve found about Islamic reform and reviving the tradition of Islamic intellectualism: http://www.irshadmanji.com/project-ijtihad
I’m slightly irked that they invite non-Muslims to participate but implicitly define this to mean “people of non-Muslim religions” and exclude atheists and agnostics. However, I still think the project overall is an awesome idea.

Irshad Manji is a pretty ardent secularist, so I don’t think she has anything against atheists. She does, however, define herself as a Muslim for reasons that have more to do with wanting to reform her faith community, and I have my doubts as to whether that’s valid reason to call yourself a believer in any religion. Probably because she’s already having a tough enough time reaching a Muslim audience, and defining herself as an “athiest Muslim” like the atheist Jews Christina wrote about the other day would catch her even more flack.

Funny blog. The author, illiterate in matters of religion, is trying to look well-informed.
