The Bank Job, And The Normalizing Of Kink: The Blowfish Blog

Note to family and others who don’t want to read about my personal sex life: This piece, and the piece it links to, doesn’t go into a lot of detail about my personal sex life, but it mentions it in passing. Use your judgment about whether you want to read it. Thanks.

I have a new piece on the Blowfish Blog. It’s a review of the new heist movie, “The Bank Job,” and… well, do you remember that Saturday Night Live sketch about the welder’s review of “Flashdance”? This is sort of like that.

This is the sadomasochist’s review of “The Bank Job.”

It’s called The Bank Job, And The Normalizing Of Kink, and here’s the teaser:

Now, secret sex — even secret sadomasochistic sex — being used to drive a movie plot is hardly unusual. It’s barely worth even mentioning, much less writing an entire column about. But there’s something about the kink in “The Bank Job” that’s very unusual indeed… so unusual in mainstream movies as to be almost unheard of.

And that’s this: The movie’s attitude towards the sadomasochism is entirely casual, and entirely non-judgmental.

To find out more, read the rest of the piece. Enjoy!

I’ve noticed casual, happy SM coming out in modern music, too. And not just indie music – MAINSTREAM popular stuff.
    There’s Ludacris’s “What’s Your Fantasy” that’s filled with kinks.
Justin Timberlake’s “SexyBack” has the lyrics: “Dirty babe, you see these shackles, baby, I’m your slave. I’ll let you whip me if I misbehave. It’s just that no one makes me feel this way.”
And then, Avril Lavigne’s “Hot” – “I wanna lock you up in my closet when no one’s around. I wanna put your hand in my pocket because you’re allowed. I wanna drive you into a corner and kiss you without a sound. I wanna stay this way forever. I’ll say it loud.”
This makes kinky me very happy to hear SM mentioned without the usual negative commentary you still see especially on crime shows. Even Season Six of Buffy, which I like very much for the kinky side of things, tends to look down upon it as something dark (see also: Faith in Season Three). I appreciate any mention that embraces it as acceptable for some.

Oh, yeah, it’s becoming normalised, all right. You wait. I mean, I suppose the process might seem slow to those who actually do such things and struggle for acceptance, but, speaking as someone who never really thought about it before — yeah, it’s becoming more acceptable. And a good thing, too.
