Bulldozing Kindergartens

Israel is getting well beyond ridiculous. Now they’ve got plans to demolish a Palestinian kindergarten. It is, of course, being done in the interests of “national security.”

From here, it looks like they’re intent on creating more terrorists. Demolishing a village and ensuring kids don’t get an education is a pretty good way of proving you’re a right bunch of bastards.

It’s not the first time they’ve done something outrageous in this village:

In 1983 the IDF declared Al Aqabah a “training area” and even engaged in live fire training in the village, killing 8 villagers, wounding dozens more and driving many residents to leave until an Israeli court several years ago ordered an end to training inside the village.

That’s just so far beyond the pale of decency it’s not even describable.

If you care to sign a petition against this bullshit, there’s one all ready for you.

Torture Apologists and the Need for a Special Prosecutor

The neocons are working the refs overtime in an attempt to convince us that when it comes to al Qaeda, all torture is good torture. Check out Michael Smerconish on Hardball, claiming that if the US is doing it, it’s gotta be right:

MATTHEWS: KSM is Khalid Shaikh Mohammed. [Cheney] approved the waterboarding. He said it’s fine. Michael Smerconish, you agree?

MICHAEL SMERCONISH, RADIO TALK SHOW HOST, MSNBC POLITICAL ANALYST: I agree. And I think the fact that the vice president now acknowledges that he was involved in the decision-making process tells us how sparingly this technique has been used. Most published accounts say less than six members of al Qaeda have been subjected to waterboarding, and yet it’s so dominant a headline.

I’ll tell you something else, Chris. You’ve got to believe in the efficacy of water boarding because one has to suspect that the best of our interrogators would be assigned to KSM. And if that man or that women believed that these means were necessary, then obviously, they believe in the efficacy of waterboarding.

And frankly, there are no measures that I would be unwilling to say-or I would be willing to say are inappropriate for the likes of Khalid Shaikh Mohammed. Mine is a blanket endorsement…

MATTHEWS: So shoot his toes off one at a time.

SMERCONISH: … of whatever is necessary.

MATTHEWS: No, no, no. Michael, shoot his toes off one at a time is fine with you. You just said that, right? Anything is OK with you?

SMERCONISH: Chris, listen, you can play whatever sound bite you’d like, I’ll go along with it tonight.

MATTHEWS: No, I’m asking. I don’t know…

(CROSSTALK)

MATTHEWS: Do you think it’s OK to just do…

SMERCONISH: If you’re talking…

MATTHEWS: … any kind of torture?

SMERCONISH: Yes, Chris, I believe that if you’re dealing with the operations planner of September 11 and if this individual has actionable intelligence, that there are no means that should not be employed. We’re talking about individuals who fly airplanes into buildings to kill Americans, who will decapitate-remember, KSM talks with bravado about decapitating Mr. Pearl from “The Wall Street Journal.” So keep in mind who you’re dealing with. There’s no tit for tat here. In other words, they’re not going to tone it down if we tone it down. So do whatever is necessary…

MATTHEWS: OK. You’re clear.

SMERCONISH: … to protect American lives.

MATTHEWS: I just wanted to make sure-I wanted to be graphic about shooting the toes off because we’ve all seen that in movies and in film, where you see all kinds of torture used by the bad guys. I just wanted to know if you thought we could do the same. That’s all.

SMERCONISH: Indeed. I do.

These fuckers are all living in a fantasy world. Read the transcript or watch the clip – it’s incredible, especially toward the end:

MATTHEWS: In other words, your moral system is based on, if you’re an American, anything goes. If you’re in the other country, we try you for war crimes. You lose the war, we cut your head off, or whatever it takes, we execute you. In other words, your morality is entirely nationally based. I’m just asking.

SMERCONISH: And I’m going to answer, if you’ll give me the chance. Yes, my moral code is dictated by the fact that I want our leaders to be guided to protect American lives first.

He outright says we can torture people wearing the uniform of another country. Later, he tries to walk it back and say that for now, he’s only talking about al Qaeda, but he demonstrates he would have no problem wiping out the Geneva Conventions. He thinks we’re justified in perpetrating any horror as long as the other side is doing it, too.

Christopher Hitchens takes him apart. He is, of course, too stupid to realize it. And you can expect a lot more of this sort of bullshit to spew forth from the mouths of Cons like a cow with dysentary. I somehow doubt the Hague will be impressed with the resulting pile of noxious excuses. But the right certainly seems to be. And Duncan Hunter speaks for them all when he says that all the talk about detainee abuse is “left-wing rubbish.”

Amazing how they like to portray themselves as the “moral” ones.

That makes the proposal to fire U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald very attractive indeed:

Mr. President, one of the first things you’ll get upon your swearing in is a stack of resignation letters from all the U.S. Attorneys, standard procedure when changing Administrations. The very first one you should act on is that of Patrick Fitzgerald, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.

[snip]

There is abundant reason to believe that gross violations of our Law have taken place at the highest levels of our Government including authorizing or ordering torture, unlawful detention of U.S. citizens, unlawful surveillance and wiretapping of U.S. citizens and other serious offenses, committed and/or authorized by Cabinet Secretaries and Executive Branch officials.

From the moment you take the Oath of Office it becomes your sworn Duty to “take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed”, which must include investigating and, if appropriate, prosecuting, possible criminal actions at high levels in the Administration preceeding yours. That’s where Patrick Fitzgerald comes in.

Accept Fitzgerald’s resignation as U.S. Attorney, and immediately appoint him Special Counsel with authority to investigate ANY credible allegation of lawbreaking by ANY official with the rank of Undersecretary or above, give him full Presidential backing and turn him loose. His brief should extend to any such official, or Member of Congress, who had knowledge of such lawbreaking but did nothing to stop it, as is their responsibility.

Sounds like an excellent idea to me.

Our nation’s highest officials redefined torture and threw the Geneva Conventions out the window. They engaged in war crimes, and now they’re sending an army of apologists to try to convince the American public that they were doing the right thing all along. The world knows bet
ter: what we did was wrong. There is no justification for torture. “They’re doing it, too!” is not an excuse. “But we got our lawyers to say it was okay!” is not an excuse. “Ticking time bombs” are a myth. Torture doesn’t keep America safe. All it does is lowers us to the same level as dictators, terrorists, and criminals.

We need to show the world that our laws matter, and that we will take responsibility and decisive action when our leaders lead us astray. Commissions aren’t going to be enough. Handwringing is useless. What we need is prosecutions. If we don’t hold our own war criminals to account, we run a very real risk that future administrations will descend into further lawlessness. We lose our moral authority. And we fail as a democracy.

We need to rise above the depravity of the last eight years and get ourselves back on track. It may be politically easier to let bygones be bygones, but we need to inform Obama that turning our back on the past does nothing to heal this country and prevent us from ever falling so far again.

Time to make our voices heard (h/t):

That’s a message the torture apologists will find hard to spin. It’s the clearest way to show them we’re not swallowing their bullshit.

Torture Apologists and the Need for a Special Prosecutor

In Answer to Annie

Annie took me to task for thanking Thomas Tamm and pointing up the need for whistleblowers. Cujo359 answered her quite well, but I’m going to expand on that a bit here.

First off, I have blown the whistle. I lost my job over it. So I guess that makes two of us.

Secondly, silence does fuck-all to help anyone. Noise gets attention. And attention sometimes leads to people who can help:

The bottom line is that Tom Tamm blowing the whistle is probably the linchpin behind us knowing what we do about the egregious unconstitutional and illegal actions of the Bushies. Tamm coming forward at this time may also prove to be critical in forming Judge Walker’s mind on his review of the immunity assertion.

A lot of readers have asked about how to donate to Tamm’s legal defense fund. In that regard, I contacted Mr. Tamm’s attorney, Paul Kemp and obtained the information; here is the response:

Hi [bmaz]. Thanks for your inquiry. The address of the defense fund
is:

Thomas Tamm Legal Defense Fund
Bank of Georgetown
5236 44th Street
Washington, DC 20015.

Tom appreciates your support and that of your readers. [Some
unrelated chit chat on another matter redacted]

Paul F. Kemp

Irrespective of his precise personal motivations, Tom Tamm has done the Constitution, the Fourth Amendment, the rule of law and all of us a favor by exposing the rank lawlessness of the elected leaders of this country. If you see fit, send him a few bucks to lighten the load he has taken on.

Thirdly, even if not accompanied by fundraising, getting stories like Mr. Tamm’s out in the open accomplishes a great many things. It’s called consciousness-raising. Whistleblowers go through hell and back in part because people don’t know enough to care. They don’t realize what comes after that whistle’s blown. They don’t stop to think about the consequences of silence. Making some noise means that regular people become aware of both, and can take action. They’ll see the need to pressure lawmakers to pass legislation that will put heavy penalties in place for retaliation, for one thing. And who knows? Maybe the writer of the story can’t help directly, but maybe one of the readers is in a position to offer a job, or representation, or any one of a dozen necessary things.

Fourthly, what the fuck am I supposed to do? Ignore the sacrifice? Not even say “thank you”? Show no appreciation whatsoever for the person who brought abuses to light, thus making me aware and empowered? You may not feel the same way, Annie, but plenty of people find at least a bit of comfort in knowing that there are people who appreciate that sacrifice and are grateful for it. I know I did. And it felt good doing the right thing, even though I got shafted for it.

And finally, I’ll stand by my call for more people to come forward and reveal abuses. It’s up to the individual to decide if the risks are worth it, but I have no compunction about calling for people to bring light to dark caves. Even if all I have to offer in turn is gratitude, my sympathy for the hell they’ll go through, and my ability to kick up a fuss in the blogosphere on their behalf.

No one ever promised it would be easy. No one ever promised virtue would be rewarded, and evil punished. But I believe the greater evil is to let fear and risk silence us in the face of outrageous abuses.

I don’t imagine, after your experience, that any of that will hold any water with you, Annie. On this one thing, we may have to acknowledge an impasse and move on.

Paying a Heavy Price for Throwing Footwear

Al-Zaidi became an instant hero among those of us who have long wanted to hurl something at Bush’s thick head. Now he could use our help:

While Tweety fussed about the propriety of Al Zaida’s shoe throw just now, very credible reports started to come in from Arabic sources that Muntader Al Zaida is in very bad shape:

Raed in the Middle reports:

Albaghdadia, the TV channel where the Iraqi Journalist Montather Al-Zeidi works, reports that an Iraqi MP (Ms. Zainab Al-Kanani) informed them that Montather’s hand was broken in jail.

This confirms a lot of reports and rumors about Montather being subject to torture while the Iraqi authorities are interrogating and detaining him in some unspecified location.

From Roads to Iraq:

Iraqi TV al-Sharqiya just reported on the news that AL-Zaidi is transferred to Camp Cropper prison [the Airport prison, managed by the American forces].

The TV Channel announced that Al-Zaidi is in a difficult condition, with broken ribs and signs of tortures on his thighs. Also he can not move his right arm.

[snip]

Urgent appeals for Al Zaida’s safety should be made by phone to the White House – 202-456-1111 and the Iraqi Embassy – (202) 742-1600.

I wish I could hope that being transferred to a prison managed by Americans meant he’d get proper care and treatment. There was a time, not too long ago, when that would never have been in question.

At least we can let them know we’re watching.

Lavender flu, I’m afraid:

National Day Without A Gay has been called for December 10, International Human Right Day, and organizers are encouraging people to “call in gay” and spend the day being of service as volunteers in the community:

Day Without A Gay seeks to shift our strong feelings about injustice toward service! Let’s fight for equality by out-loving those who would deny us rights. Call in “gay” on December 10th (International Human Rights Day) and volunteer for your local LGBT and/or human rights organizations.

[snip]

In Southern California, gay-out participants are readying themselves to help fire victims along with helping out other service groups, and Day Without A Gay has a a state-by-state listing of volunteer opportunities.

Terribly sorry. I’ll be in tomorrow, though. Don’t mind the possible splotches of paint, or the papercuts from stuffing envelopes – it’s all part of my therapy.

Happy Belated Veterans Day

I could write up a post full of flowery praise and stirring eulogies, but I prefer to make a promise: to honor those who served by supporting lawmakers who work hard to make sure our vets get the services they need, and try to keep the men and women who serve this country out of useless bloody wars. Support Our Troops is an easy thing to say. What we need is less talk and more action.

We can start right here:

Today is Veteran’s Day, and six years ago, Saxby Chambliss perpetrated one of the more cowardly and despicable attacks on a veteran in recent political history, accusing multiple-amputee Max Cleland of disloyalty and producing an ad connecting him to Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden (the core of the charge was because Cleland favored union rights for Department of Homeland Security employees, by the way – so it was an anti-union smear as much as it was a national security smear).

[snip]

I will say that Saxby Chambliss is at least consistent. His contempt for veterans in the political arena is matched by his opposition to them on the floor of the Senate, voting against funding for the new GI Bill, traumatic brain injury research, proper amounts of time between deployments, and dozens of other initiatives.

Now, Chambliss is facing Jim Martin, an Army veteran who served one tour of duty in Vietnam. Neither candidate reached 50% in the November election, so there is a December 2 runoff scheduled. Barack Obama is sending aides to Georgia to work on the campaign, which will undoubtedly come down to turnout, and now it’s our turn. On Veteran’s Day, bloggers are having a national day of action to raise money and awareness for Martin. There are scattered events planned across the country, but you can visit this ActBlue page and give to Martin directly. Considering that not just McCain but Mike Huckabee and even Sarah Palin are scheduled to rush to Chambliss’ aid, it’s a chance to humiliate them once again.

[snip]

Help out Jim Martin today.

Bloggers for Martin

I’ve had enough of chickenhawks smearing our vets to win elections. I’ve had more than enough of those chickenhawks yawping about how wonderful our servicemembers are while voting down the bills that would give vets the actual support they need.

Let’s give Jim Martin a leg up, and show that we really do support our troops.

Happy Belated Veterans Day

Democracy in Action

You are the People. Raise your voice.

First off, if you’re pissed off at the Mormon Church’s foray into politics to suppress the rights of gays, I’ve got a petition for ye:

Sign this petition to support the legal effort to amend our tax laws such that the Mormon Church, and other transgressing churches, would lose tax-exempt status if they continue lobbying for state propositions. We intend to share this list with the ACLU, Lambda Legal, and other official legal organizations that will be pressing forward with this effort.

And before I hear tons of bullshit over how this infringes on the church’s right to speak, etc. etc., remember that no one’s saying they can’t support noxious legislation intended to push their narrow-minded values on the citizenry at large. All it’s saying is that if they choose to indulge, they get to pay taxes like the rest of us. If you want to play, pay.

I think that’s fair enough to ask. Certainly more fair than the lies these rabid fuckwits tell to persuade people to vote for bigotry and hate.

Next on our agenda of action items: a delightful petition to the Senate Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee requesting they kick Lieberman’s ass to the curb:

Dear Senators,

Two years ago, Democrats in Joe Lieberman’s own state voted for change in Connecticut’s U.S. Senate primary against Ned Lamont.

Despite pledges to caucus with the party and refrain from attacking our presidential nominee, Senator Lieberman has consistently threatened to leave our ranks and even attacked Barack Obama as keynote speaker during Republican Convention.

Earlier this week, he even campaigned against a “filibuster-proof Democratic majority.” Make no mistake about it, when graciously offered a chance to remain in the caucus at the expense of his chairmanship, he offered more threats in a nationally televised press conference.

The decision is now up to you. Please do not allow Joe Lieberman to go around Senator Reid and remain chairman of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.

Though Lieberman has not investigated one meaningful scandal in his role as chairman during the Bush Administration, we are certain he will only be too happy to cause problems for an Obama administration when 2009 rolls around.

It’s time for Joe to go.

Indeedy.

And here you thought I’d stop pestering you with petitions. Not so, my darlings. Our work is only beginning. Our voices need to be raised in a sustained chorus for the next four years. Run through your scales and get ready to break the glass.

Mormon Mafia Getting Asses Kicked

The Mormon Church is in lust with Prop 08, which would amend California’s constitution to destroy same-sex couples their chance at wedded bliss. They’ve spent upwards of $10 million, deployed doorknockers, engaged in extortion, and made a general nuisance of themselves trying to legislate their morality. If you’re in California, you’ve likely gotten a phone call from these fuckers trying to arm-twist you into voting yes for discrimination.

They won’t be calling you again:

The Mormon church, whose members have emerged as the leading backers of a ballot measure to end same-sex marriage in California, is scaling back its Utah campaign operation but will continue to support the initiative.

Church members will no longer be making phone calls from Utah to California voters, Kim Farah, a spokeswoman for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said in a prepared statement Friday.

And what led to this welcome state of affairs? People like you. The Courage Campaign and NO activists exposed their fuckery, applied public pressure, and sent them reeling.

If you want to apply the boot and kick some self-righteous ass, you can sign a letter to President-Prophet Thomas Monson expressing your desire for him to knock off the moral mafiosi tactics. Then you can donate a few bucks to NO. Send them a message:

The lesson we should take from all of this is to keep it up. Keep up the focus on the Mormons. Keep exposing their lies and blackmail. Keep pointing out the hypocrisy of a religion funding lies and distortions. We can respect their freedom to choose not to conduct same-sex marriages, we only ask that they respect Californians to make up our own minds on whether we should take away the rights of loving couples to marry.

The moral mafiosi are relentless.

So are we.
