Mobbed by Goslings! Sneak Peek

I took a walk by North Creek between projects, and got utterly mobbed by goslings, you guys. I’ve got video! They were adorable. I’ve gotta find time to put together the pics and vids, but here’s a sneak peek for ye:

Image shows a few fluffy and adorable goslings milling around on a paved walkway, looking for bits of food. In the foreground, an adult Canada Goose has its head twisted around to face the camera. Its mouth is wide open, showing bits of the bread it's been eating.
I WANT MOAR DAMMIT!

So impatient! Look, it hasn’t even finished chewing and it’s already demanding more! LOL. The adults were pretty pushy, and once they figured out the bag on my arm is where the food was coming from, they just about took it from me when I didn’t dispense fast enough. I was being careful not to annoy the adults, and didn’t try to touch any of them, but I could’ve practically scooped ’em all up and gotten big floofy hugs, they were that confident around people. It’s the closest I’ve ever been to geese, actually.

I got to feed a few of the ducks before the geese chased ’em off. I actually encountered a mallard female who was more aggressive than the boys. It was awesome watching her boss everybody around.

Then I came home and got to work out on the porch in the sunshine with Misha.

Image shows Misha sitting on a chair with me scratching her chin. The forest is behind her.
Gettin’ scritchins.

I love this time of year!

    D’Awwwww, Mishaaaaaaa.

Um, I’m glad you didn’t try hugging any of the geese. They only like you for the food, and there’s a reason they’ve been used historically as guard animals.
We had geese when I was little. The ‘domestic’ kind, which enjoyed pecking everyone, especially those who came bearing feed buckets, and they knew just where the rubber boot ended and your skin began. Every time geese try to crowd me, I back away as fast as I can without actually showing them my fear reaction.
I don’t like getting too close to swans, either. They’re all dinosaurs, and if that’s not enough to frighten you…
(Also, for extra feeding tips, see here. Yumyum, cracked corn!!)

Our neighbors had domestic geese. Vicious bastards. They loved nothing better than trying to take a chunk outta the kiddies. So yeah… no geese-hugging for me! I think this bunch only didn’t eat me cuz I kept my hands to myself and stayed calm. I had the sense that they were just waiting for one slip, lol. They were fun and reasonably polite, tho.

Didn’t know they’d been used as guard animals, but I can believe it! Did you see the teeth inside that mouth?!

And swans are just evil. Elegant, but veryvery evil.

PZ had a great photo of an open-mouthed penguin recently. *shudder* Enough evidence for me.
And anyway, lookit how easy it is!!!!!
(I’ll still feed the wee dinos in winter, though. Can’t have them freezing to death or dying of starvation – who will eat all the mosquitoes that are about to emerge?)

I saw a family of geese by my bus stop a few days ago. I wanted to take a picture, but the adults started hissing and mantling when I was still a good 15 feet away. The babies are adorable, but not so adorable that I’d want to risk tangling with their parents just to get a picture.
