Test Your Mad Glacial-Valley Spotting Skillz, with Bonus Mount Rainier

B and I made it up to Lord Hill at the end of January. It was a mostly-clear day, and we found the viewpoint I’d been wanting. Huzzah! Here I am standing upon it in triumph, gazing toward the Cascades:

Image shows me standing to the left, looking over a valley filled with evergreen and leafless trees, with the Cascades in a line on the horizon.
Moi at Lord Hill.

There are two kinda-hard to see things here, but I’ll bet you can find them. There’s the moon, and there’s a classic u-shaped glacial valley. I’ll give you some time to look round, and then show you it tomorrow! There will even be an airplane for scale!

So that was pretty awesome. The really neato thing we discovered is that you can see Mount Rainier from up there – but only in winter!

Image shows a screen of leafless trees. Through them you can see Mount Rainier.
Mount Rainier through a stand of trees.

In summer, I’m pretty sure it’s perfectly invisible. This almost makes me regret the fact trees are starting to bud. Sigh. Ah, well, I’ll soon have some gorgeous fruit tree flower photo opportunities, so I suppose that’s all right. Let’s have another look at Mount Rainier, though.

Another view. The snowfields on the west flank of the mountain are more visible.
Slightly better? It’s really hard to shoot the mountain through a lot of sticks.

I found both! I’m pretty sure, at least.
And I even found Mount Rainier through all those sticks! Still majestic. :)
    Looks like gorgeous weather.

The moon is easy enough. I see a couple of candidates for “u-shaped glacial valley”, one right of center and the other to the far right.

The real test is which, if any, of those white tips peeking out is Glacier Peak?
