Laugh, Shudder, or Shudder-Laugh?

Doctor Who fans will have one of the above three responses immediately. Non-fans will look on blankly and go, “Harf?”

And yeah, the Weeping Angels are creepy and “Blink” was a freaky episode. But I have to tell you, as far as monsters go… I still have a hard time with shadows. Fans of the Tennant years will know exactly what I mean. The rest of you just bloody well need to stop staring at the rest of us and watch the show.

Resistance is futi – no, wait, that’s Star Trek. But the point still stands.

As a new Who fan, I’ve seen only a couple of Tennant episodes, but one of them was “Blink”. I’d previously seen a couple of 11th doctor episodes with the angels. They creep me out more than any other movie/TV monster ever. They’d be even better, however, without the pointy teeth you see when they’re about to strike. What’s with Who’s obsession with pointy teeth?

Resistance is Useless was the original catchphrase of the Cybermen. So it’s pretty apt!

So that’s a ‘Yes’ to my query of ‘Should I start watching the show?’
And yes, that was an admission… I have never in my life as yet seen a single episode of any Dr Who, be it second, fourth, seventh or eleventh. (Does that mean our relationship is over, Dana???)
But I’ve been thinking of remedying that.

The Angels were the creepiest thing EVER — until they decided to use them again, and again. Repetition dulls the creepiness, and hundreds of weeping angels turned out to be a lot LESS scary than one or four.

My sister set up her desktop to rotate through images of a weeping angel getting gradually closer. Sometimes she closes a window and there’s a growly-toothy angel RIGHT THERE and it’s terrifying.

@elspeth: Right. I don’t care if I never see another dalek. They’re kind of a joke. Cybermen are even worse, if anything.

Heh, I’m old enough to have watched the original William Hartnell episodes; from that Doctor to this, I’ve never been more than bemused by the show – but then, I’m bemused by most sci-fi, not to mention the hordes who take it seriously (Jedi a religion? C’mon!).
I saw stone angels every day, living as I did next to a cemetary as a child, and can honestly say that I was never frightened by them.
But then again, I never saw one of the buggers move :-)

Ahh, that’s what they wanted you to think whilst they were remedying their one major weakness, namely the inability to use stairs. Now they’ve solved that problem*, all-out war is imminent.

*What, did you not know that disabled access to all public buildings is actually a Dalek plot?
