It’s that madness that happens when you planned to do something simple, but kept enlarging upon the idea, and then expanding upon those enlargements, and embroidering the details, and so on. A sort of positive feedback loop takes effect, and your life becomes dominated by something that started out very simply indeed.
I really only meant to make one simple cloak. That’s it. When I told my coworker I’d help him dress up as Captain TMI for Halloween, I meant I’d make him a cloak and design a logo. I didn’t mean to make the mask and the boots and a shield and all the accessories. And I didn’t mean to dress up with him. I have to sew this shit by hand, forfuckssake. But here we are, it’s the weekend, I’ve spent the entire weekend working on these costumes (with a brief aside for cooking and cleaning the kitchen), when what I’d meant to do was spend the weekend doing research.
I haven’t even welcomed Avicenna and NonStampCollector to FreethoughtBlogs. Although I have, now, watched nearly every video NonStampCollector ever put out. Whilst my hands and eyes are busy with stitching and painting, my ears have been busy with various videos on science, atheism and reason. Without those, I think I might have gone completely mental.
Those of you with sewing machines, please tell them how much they are loved. All of you pause for a moment to remember the inventors of the sewing machine with fondness. I’m amazed people ever wore more than a piece of cloth wrapped round their sensitive bits: this hand-sewing stuff takes forever.
And now I’m back to it. Just popping in to say why some things are going to be quite late, and why it’s a damned good thing I had some substantial posts pre-written. I just hope my coworker lets me put photos of him up here. This costume, my friends, is bloody epic.
Oh you and your superhero costumes. The best I’ve done is a champignon mushroom costume. For a kindergarten thing. My elephant mask runs a close second.
One day soon, I’ll also be delving into superhero mask/cape/boots territory. That being said, I DEMAND PICTURES!
Thank you for reminding me of the black fabric waiting to be turned into my daughter’s Halloween costume.
But I do have a sewing maching and I’m going to use it. Hate sewing by hand.
My machine, it’s my precioussssssss
You defeat me. I doubt I could manage mushrooms OR elephants!
Pictures are a certainty. Even if I can’t get Captain TMI himself, you’ll have me at least. But he’s Captain TMI – I’m pretty sure he’ll share. ;-)
Oh, how I needed that laugh! LOTR reference FTW!
I once dressed up as Sinestero, my flatmate as a green lantern. We got a bunch of inflatable toys painted yellow and green which we threw at each other and passing strangers.
All of my sewing happens by hand. :( Hopefully soon there will be space for a sewing machine, and THEN watch the costumes come pouring off the production line…
Ahh scope creep, the ruination of many a project…
Of course most of my projects don’t involve sewing and the one that did ended up with grey trousers being repaired with apricot cotton which I then coloured in with a lead pencil
Brings back memories. No Halloween here, but the dreaded Book Week where kids dress up as favourite book characters. So my preschooler wanted to go as Cinderella or some such ballgown clad princessy person. I was up half the night hand-stitching the ‘beautiful’ swagged ruffled hem. Got so tired I walked into the edge of the coffee table in my bare feet and broke a small toe, and still had to finish the rotten thing.
My contributions at the next and following few days management conference suffered from a certain degree of grumpiness.
Well, damnit, enjoy the results of your hard work then. Happy Halloween!
I would have said that they will only get my sewing machine from me when they take it from my cold, dead hands.
And they keep saying that sewing is a low-risk operation. Ha! Congratulations on surviving yet another project. :)
Only “very slightly mad’, Dana? Well, that’s all right then…
A sewing machine solves nothing as far as mission creep goes. It only gives you time to add more details….
But it makes adding details that much easier and more fun than poking that needle through all kinds of fabric, most often (by the end) into your fingers…
I’d never ever get anything done without my machine. I’m impatient. I remember fitting the sleeves of my wedding gown by hand and then noticing I put them in backwards…
And I didn’t get to sewing tonight. Just too tired.
Ha! Done!
Hurrah! :)
WIN.
