Schempp: Gravity is Only a Theory

This essay is a few years old but well worth promoting anyway. It’s a parody of creationism written by my friend Ellery Schempp, who got mandatory Bible reading removed from public schools as a heroic young man of 16. He puts his knowledge as a physicist to work constructing a very amusing satire that would no doubt fool the ignoranti at Conservapedia.

Clear Channel’s Billboard Hypocrisy

Here’s an interesting development in the Heartland Institute story, where they put up billboards comparing those who accept global warming to serial killers and terrorists. Another group tried to put up their own message on the very same billboard site in Chicago that criticized companies for supporting Heartland. Here’s the billboard they wanted to put up:

Wingnuts on the Power of Prayer

Rick Scarborough was on David Barton’s radio show making the idiotic claim that Gov. Rick Perry’s public prayers for rain were answered and God solved the drought in Texas because of it. Get a load of this exchange of stupidity:

Bradlee Dean’s Confidence

Bradlee Dean is mad as hell and he’s not going to take it anymore. You all know by now about his lawsuit against Rachel Maddow and my former employer, the American Independent News Network. He tells OneNewsNow, the AFA’s “news” outlet, that he’s not going to let Maddow get away with quoting him directly:

Judge Says No to Lord’s Prayer at Council Meetings

A federal judge in Delaware has issued a preliminary injunction in a case challenging the Sussex County Council’s policy of saying the Lord’s Prayer before all of their meetings, but he suspended that ruling to give the two sides time to work out a compromise. Americans United said in a press release:

Texas Likely Executed an Innocent Man

A new report by a team of investigators concludes that the state of Texas likely executed an innocent man named Carlos DeLuna in 1989. He was convicted because he looked like the one who really committed the murder, and despite a good deal of evidence that he was innocent.

Gay Republicans Not Happy With Romney

Mitt Romney went to posthumously kiss the ring of Jerry Falwell by speaking at the Liberty University commencement ceremony and did his best imitation of a wingnut he could muster. But even that has him in trouble with GOProud, the gay conservative group:

Rauch Reflects on How Far We’ve Come

Jonathan Rauch, who has been arguing in favor of marriage equality longer than almost any other public intellectual, attended a same-sex wedding three days after Obama’s announced support for equality, and he reflects on how far the country has come in a remarkably short period of time:

This Week in the War on Women

Rachel Maddow had an entire segment dedicated to the latest news in the war on women, which Republicans insist is just a political slogan while they work every day to prove it correct. You’re not gonna believe what the Republicans are trying to do on the Violence Against Women Act.

Orly’s First Campaign Ad

Orly Taitz has released her first campaign ad, which is four minutes long and apparently narrated by that chain-smoking woman you might expect to run into at a VFW hall. It’s one long, weird, hilarious mishmash of claims and statements, complete with the music of Yankee Doodle Dandy. No, I’m not kidding. This commercial had to set the campaign back a good 40 bucks.

Badass Quote of the Day

I have been an outspoken critic of many of President Obama’s policies from the day he took office and I will continue to be one as long as he pursues policies that violate the principles I believe in, but I still loved this passage from the commencement speech he gave at Barnard College:

Virginia Bigot Spews Crazy on CNN

Virginia Delegate and wingnut extraordinaire Bob Marshall went on CNN to defend the voting down of a state judge solely because he’s gay. He was predictably stupid, crazy and paranoid. Politico reports:

D’Souza’s Bizarre Attack on Obama

The staggeringly dishonest Dinesh D’Souza has a new movie coming out, based on his idiotic book criticizing — yes, criticizing — Obama for being anti-colonialist (what sane, decent person isn’t?). Here’s the trailer, which says nothing at all. It darkly implies that Obama wants to “downsize America” (whatever that could possibly mean) and contrasts that with the founding fathers, who supposedly wanted “growth.” Just bizarre.

Vegetarians are Murderers!

That is the inescapable logical conclusion of this op-ed piece written by Michael Marder in the New York Times in favor of “plant liberation.” Plants, you see, have a “vegetal soul” and they respond to stimuli, therefore … well, something. He doesn’t really say what. But there’s some serious intellectual wankery going on here:

2012 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductions

I used to do a yearly review of the induction ceremony for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame every year, but I’ve neglected it the last couple years. But I caught the ceremony on HBO this year and thought I’d write something up about it. Among the inductees were the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Beastie Boys and Guns and Roses.
