What's weird is that if you pay attention to what Blitzer says, he's actually asking her if she thanked God, not for saving her life, but for making the decision to leave. Why would anyone, even a Christian, thank God for a decision they made? It wasn't God that made you decide it - or is Blitzer seriously willing to give up on free will?

Oh I think the primary set of assertions regarding Christianity are far more fraudulent than what we observe here, and far more damaging to humanity than what this two-bit huckster did.

This is the same chap who used to believe that the French belong in Algeria but not the other way around

He's not alone: my mother once told me that, in her youth, she had been staunchly pr-French Algeria, until one day when she assisted to a reunion of nostalgic of the colonial empire. Basically, what most people present wanted was to use France's nuclear stockpile to genocide the algerian population and repopulate the country with settlers once the radiation level had fallen: this was what people from the french far-right were saying during the early 60s when they believed themselves in front of a friendly audience.

Suffice t say, it was enough to turn my mother from strongly pro-french Algeria to pro-algerian independance in less than three minutes. But this story is for me a personal reminder of the disgusting urges which drive the self-proclaimed "über-patriots".

“Maybe, but his nasal singing voice is annoying. He should have just stuck to songwriting.”

democommie writes:
Warren Zevon, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Mark Knopfler, Neill Young, Joe Walsh, John Hyatt [Hiatt] are–just off the top of my head–male vocalists who are not what anyone would call great “singers” but nobody else can do their songs like they can.

I'd add Tom Petty into that mix, who I love. And hey! I think Neil Young's a great singer, even though I don't usually like high-pitched singers.

While I don't normally gravitate to lyric-centric artists (devout Stones and Led Zeppelin fan), I'm a huge Bob Dylan fan. I had a thirty-three year-old relative with an open mind challenge me to put a play-list together over Christmas. She'd only heard a Dylan song here and there and did not get why he had such devout fans (like me). So I put together about 140 minutes of his music in reverse chronological order and submitted it to her. This was the first time I recall ever being responsible for a conversion. I should point out she's my primary resource where her challenge is keeping me relevant instead of stuck in the late-60s through the grunge era.

As I said elsewhere, it was obvious he was fishing for a "thank God" so he could close the interview and move on the the next one. It made me wonder how many people are pushed into those videoed "thank gods" like Blitzer was doing to her.

I also wonder how many people have said, "Thank God? Are you kidding? I cannot think of anything more obscenely insensitive that a person could say while surrounded by scattered corpses and all this destruction" I think even a devote Christian might say that, but you sure as hell won't see it on the news.
