Gerrymandering Needs to Go

Gerrymander_Complex

In addition to the need for a non-partisan federal agency to run and control our elections, here’s another change that needs to be made: Elected officials should not be in charge of drawing new congressional districts every ten years. Both parties use that power, when they’re in charge, to draw bizarre districts that make little …

Agreeing With David Frum

I could not agree more with David Frum, who points out the madness of allowing partisan elected officials to run our elections, something no other stable democracy in the world does. When you see problems with too few voting machines, battles over long lines and early voting periods, this happens because those elected officials, especially …

Religious Right Founder Endorses Voter Suppression

Right Wing Watch dug up this old video of Paul Weyrich, the founding father of the religious right, bluntly saying that he wants fewer and fewer people to vote because the more people who vote, the less leverage the Christian right has. If you don’t know who Weyrich was, he was easily the most important …

Where the Poll Watchers Go

The Huffington Post reports what anyone who has ever covered elections could already tell you, that the Republican “poll watchers” and vote challengers go almost exclusively to districts with high percentages of poor and minority voters. Because those voters will tend to vote Democratic.

Another Misleading Republican Robocall

Here’s yet another example of a Republican campaign or group putting out misleading robocalls that help suppress the vote, this time telling people to go to the wrong polling place. A local TV station has the audio and the real polling places:

Yet Another Voter Suppression Attempt in Ohio

Ohio Republicans, especially Sec. of State Jon Husted, are pulling out all the stops to suppress voting as much as humanly possible, even if they have to break the law to do it. At the last minute, Husted has issued instructions to election clerks on how to deal with provisional ballots that are cast — …

VA Voter Suppression Prosecution Expanding

The investigation into the destruction of valid voter registration forms by an RNC employee working for one of the many sockpuppet companies Nathan Sproul keeps creating to cover his tracks and former problems with voting rights violations is expanding to cover Sproul and perhaps even more. The Washington Post reports:

The Point of Early Voting Restrictions

As has been widely reported, the lines for early voting in Ohio and Florida, two very important swing states, have been astronomically long. People are waiting hours and hours in line to take advantage of early voting, largely because the lines will likely be even longer on election day. And none of this is a …

Romney Campaign Misleading Poll Watchers

This sort of thing is becoming epidemic. ThinkProgress reports that the Romney campaign has been training poll watchers — people whose job is to challenge the eligibility of voters and muck things up at polling places so it takes longer to vote and people will be forced to leave — and has been giving them …

Where is Sproul Still Working for GOP?

The more that comes out about Republican voter registration efforts around the country, the more the whole thing stinks. It’s already been reported that the GOP “fired” Nathan Sproul’s company, Strategic Allied Consulting, after fraudulent registration forms and illegal conduct were found in several states, and that the company just changed names and kept operating …

More details are emerging on the situation in Virginia, where an employee of the Republican National Committee has been arrested on several felony counts of trashing voter registration forms. First of all, more people are now coming forward in other parts of the state saying that their registration forms were apparently not turned in.
