Former CIA Director’s Casual Sexism and Hypocrisy

Michael Hayden, who was the director of the CIA during part of the Bush administration, went on Fox News and put his sexism on display, saying that a single line from a statement made by Sen. Dianne Feinstein about the need for transparency about torture shows that she’s too “emotional” to be objective. She said …

Saudi Arabia Equates Atheism and Terrorism

Saudi Arabia, whose ruling family includes some princes who support and fund terrorism around the world, has passed a new anti-terrorism policy that defines atheism itself, along with nearly all dissent from that country’s leadership, as terrorism. The new definition of terrorism includes:

Senate Committee Leaks Torture Report Finding

That massive report on the Bush administration’s torture regime put together by the Senate Intelligence Committee has still not been released, even in redacted form, but someone with the committee has leaked one of the key findings: That torture did nothing to help find Osama Bin Laden.

Bin Laden Son-in-Law Convicted

Hey, remember all that Republican fury over the idea that terrorists could be tried in civilian courts and convicted without the world coming to an end and dogs and cats living together? Turns out, not so much. Osama Bin Laden’s son-in-law was convicted in civilian court in New York, just like hundreds of others have …

Bin Laden Son-In-Law Faces Trial in NYC

Osama Bin Laden’s son-in-law, Sulaiman Abu Ghaith, is going on trial in New York City for his support of terrorism. Yes, a civilian trial in a civilian court, not a military tribunal at Guantanamo Bay. He was arrested in Amman, Jordan and turned over to American custody.

Ironic Terrorism

Fans of irony will enjoy this story as much as I did. A suicide bomb instructor teaching a bunch of “students” how to blow up themselves and lots of innocent bystanders managed to blow up himself and his students because he was using a live jacket of explosives.

Study: NSA Metadata Mining No Help in Preventing Terrorism

A new study from the New America Foundation of 225 terrorism cases concludes that the NSA’s cell phone metadata mining program has done nothing to prevent terrorism. In fact, only 4 times in all of those cases did the NSA use any authority under Section 215 of the Patriot Act at all.

Kincaid on Mandela the Communist Terrorist

Cliff Kincaid of Accuracy in Media is not happy with Karl Rove. In the wake of the death of Nelson Mandela, Rove wrote an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal about the world leaders who died in 2013 and — gasp! — he said nice things about Mandela. Kincaid gives the usual far-right response:

Last Uighurs Finally Freed From Gitmo

The Pentagon announced this week that the last of the 22 Uighurs, a group of Muslims from China who are routinely persecuted, who had been captured and sent to Guantanamo Bay where they were likely tortured despite having no connection at all to terrorism, have finally been set free.

Pratt: Obama Helps Al Qaeda, Hates America

Larry Pratt, executive director of Gun Owners of America, the group so far to the right that they think the NRA are a bunch of liberal pansies, went on Stan Solomon’s internet radio show and declared that President Obama is always helping Al Qaeda because he just hates America.

Obama and Gitmo. Again.

President Obama announced at a press conference the other day, seemingly out of the blue, that he intends to try again to get the prison at Guantanamo Bay closed down. The chances of getting that through Congress are slim and none, but there are some things he can do on his own. Here’s part of …

Muslim Terrorism vs. Right Wing Domestic Terrorism

Mother Jones has a story that details all of the terrorist violence in the United States since 9/11 (terrorism being defined as violence committed to make a political, religious or ideological statement). The article is based largely on this report from the New America Foundation (I spent a weekend at a conference a couple years …

Wingnut on Wingnut Crime: McCarthy v Paul, Lee

Andrew McCarthy, one of the leaders of the right wingers who think that the constitution should be completely irrelevant when dealing with terrorism, has a column at NRO attacking Sens. Rand Paul and Mike Lee for supporting a prohibition on locking up American citizens in military prisons and denying them due process.

Kuhner’s Alternate Reality

Jeffrey Kuhner has a problem. Writing at the Washington Moonie Times, he wants desperately to claim that political violence in the United States comes primarily from the left, but that flies in the face of the evidence. So what to do? Oh, just play pretend:

Terrorism and Public Policy

Kevin Drum was asked a few days ago who he was secretly hoping the bombers would turn out to be. His answer was “whatever kind of person is least likely to have any effect whatsoever on public policy.” And that’s a good answer. Because such situations are often exploited to support very bad policies (Patriot …
