Obama Possessed by Demons

William Tapley, the “co-prophet of the end times,” has a video in response to President Obama’s speech to Planned Parenthood claiming that the speech was proof that Obama is possessed by demons. It’s also full of lies about abortion rights.

OMG! Obama is Condoning Rape!

That’s the latest meme from the right wing smear machine. A guest on Fox News, Republican strategist Brad Blakeman, responded to the FDA’s decision to allow the sale of Plan B contraception to those 15 and up without a prescription by declaring that Obama was “encouraging criminal behavior.”

FDA Changes Rule on Plan B Contraception

A few weeks ago a federal judge ruled that the Obama administration had acted in a manner that was “arbitrary and capricious” in not allowing Plan B contraception — the morning after pill — to be sold to girls under 17 without a prescription. The FDA has now approved it for sale to those 15 …

WV School Presents Repulsive Abstinence-Only Assembly

With all the coverage of the bombings at the Boston Marathon, I almost missed this story out of West Virginia, where a high school held a mandatory assembly to yell at kids about how horrible it is to have sex. The assembly, which you can hear below, was mostly a woman named Pam Stenzel screaming …

Barber: Obama in Collusion With Judge Who Ruled Against Him

When a federal judge last week overturned a decision by the Obama administration not to allow the sale of emergency contraception — the morning-after pill — to teenagers without a prescription, I ended my post about it by saying, “I can’t wait to see how the wingnuts blame Obama for this.” Matt Barber, come on …

Marriage Equality and Contraception

Damon Linker has an interesting analysis of a brief (PDF) filed by Robert George, a Catholic law professor at Princeton, in the Prop 8 case. He notes that all this focus on having children makes contraception the real target of the arguments being used by the anti-gay side.

Fed. Judge Overturns Obama on Morning After Pill

A federal judge has overruled an Obama administration rule that forbid the sale of emergency contraception — the morning-after pill — to girls under 17 without a prescription. Judge Edward Korman, a Reagan appointee, said the rule was the result of “a strong showing of bad faith and improper political influence.” You can read the …

After the Obama administration issued a rule that insurance companies are required to provide a rider that covers contraception in all health insurance policies, even if the group policy taken out by private companies does not include it, many states tried to pass laws overriding that requirement. A federal judge has struck down one such …

Arkansas Gets Nation’s Strictest Abortion Law

The state of Arkansas is now home to the nation’s strictest abortion law, which prohibits all abortions after 12 weeks. That clearly violates the central holding of Roe v Wade. Even worse is how the bill became law after it was vetoed by the governor:

TX Discovers Cost of Defunding Family Planning

Here’s the least surprising story of the year. After massively cutting state funding to family planning clinics last year, the state of Texas is now discovering that it will cost them almost four times as much because of all the unwanted pregnancies and they’re trying to figure out how to restore the funding without angering …

South Dakota: Women Can’t Think on Weekends or Holidays

South Dakota has long had the longest mandatory waiting period for women seeking an abortion, but now they’re about to make it even longer, 72 hours. And to make things even worse, the new law says that weekends and holidays don’t count toward the 72 hour wait:

Oklahoma GOP Tries to Overrule Federal Contraception Mandate

Republicans in Oklahoma, who apparently think the interstate commerce clause doesn’t exist, are trying to pass a bill that overrules the contraception mandate for insurance companies in that state. And you’re going to love the argument for this being made by the sponsor of the bill:

Indiana Senate: Only One Vaginal Ultrasound

The Indiana Senate amended a bill that would require vaginal ultrasounds for many women seeking abortions. The original bill called for such a procedure, even if doctors don’t consider it necessary, both before and after an RU-486 abortion. Now they’ve cut that down to just one.
