The folks who are making the documentary Kidnapped for Christ are still trying to raise the funds to finish the project and get it released. I think it’s a really important documentary. It’s about kids who are sent to a “therapeutic Christian boarding school” in the Dominican Republic where they are abused, often because their …

God Hates Crippled People
Leviticus 21 is a fascinating chapter in the Bible, containing the rules for priests who must offer up the sacrifice of food to God. The priests must remain “pure” and avoid anything that is “unclean.” And anyone who has the slightest defect is not allowed near the altar of God.

MassResistance Praises Nigerian Anti-Gay Bill
Most of the anti-gay right at least pretends not to be barbaric theocrats who want to throw gay people in prison (if they’re lucky) or put them to death. Not MassResistance, the astonishingly bigoted group from Massachusetts. They positively adore Nigeria for passing a bill that puts people in prison merely for advocating gay rights.

Mikey Gets Email
Here’s an amusing bit of crazy emailed to Mikey Weinstein last week. What is it about these people not getting acronyms right? I bet at least half of the crazy email he gets refers to the Military Religious Freedom Foundation as MFRR. That’s really not that difficult, is it?

Wingnut Calls for Martyrdom to Stop Marriage Equality
David Lane, who is running Rand Paul’s outreach to evangelical voters for his potential presidential run, has a completely unhinged column at the Worldnutdaily calling on Christians to become martyrs in order to stop same-sex marriage — how, exactly? — because it will destroy America.

Nigeria Really, Really Opposes Marriage Equality
If you thought Texas and Alabama were opposed to letting gay people get married, wait till you see Nigeria. The legislature there just passed a bill not only forbidding gays from getting married, but putting them in prison for even trying — or for witnessing such a marriage. And practically everything else too:

Faith Healing Death the Tip of the Iceberg
The child who died recently of bacterial pneumonia because his parents believed it was a sin to take him to the doctor is not just the second child of those parents to die from lack of medical care, it’s one of more than two dozen deaths in two Philadelphia churches that believe in faith healing …

Why Repealing Blasphemy Laws is Not Enough
Erasmus, a blogger for the Economist, recently saw a documentary by a Danish human rights lawyer named Jacob Mchangama about the need to get rid of all blasphemy laws. He agrees with Mchangama, of course, as do I. But he also pointed out that merely repealing such laws is not enough:

Faith Healing Parents Charged With Murder
Remember the parents in Pennsylvania who had a second child die from an entirely treatable condition while on probation for doing the same thing to another child? They’ve now been charged with third degree murder. They also face a separate hearing for violating the probation.

Amina Tyler Arrested in Tunisia
Amina Tyler, the brave young woman who shocked the country of Tunisia by posting topless photos of herself with the message “my body is my own” to protest the abuse and oppression of women in traditionalist Muslim societies, has been found and arrested by police in that country.

Bangladeshi Bloggers Still at Enormous Risk
Two of the four atheist bloggers arrested in Bangladesh recently are out of jail on bail, but that does not mean they are out of danger. As we’ve seen in Pakistan, Indonesia and other Muslim-dominated countries, those accused of blasphemy are often attacked by angry mobs. HuffPo interviews one of them about it:

Afghan Parliament Refuses to Protect Women
The Afghan parliament could not pass a law to provide the most basic protections for women because of opposition from Muslim fundamentalists. I’m sure it will come as a shock to hear that they objected to the bill and killed it because it was opposed to their Islamic “values.”

Russian Orthodox Thugs Threaten Gays
A group of Russian Orthodox thugs took to the streets of Tblisi in the nation of Georgia to threaten gay people and demand strict repression in advance of a planned gay pride event. More than a dozen people were injured. See how familiar this sounds:

Saudi Arabia Tortures, Imprisons Man for Aiding ‘Apostasy’
The Saudi government has convicted and sentenced two men for “encouraging” a young woman to convert to Christianity, sentencing them to be beaten and put in prison for the “crime” of aiding apostasy. The woman, thankfully, escaped the country.

Mikey Gets Email
Here’s yet another hateful, bigoted email sent to my friend Mikey Weinstein. He gets it far worse than most of us do because not only is he challenging Christian dominance, he also has a Jewish name and that’s all it takes to tap into a rich vein of right wing anti-Semitism.
