Dinesh D’Souza has another undoubtedly idiotic documentary out and he’s making the rounds of the right wing fever swamps to promote it. In a conversation with One American News Network’s Rick Amato, who started by declaring that “liberals hate America,” D’Souza says that teaching accurate history is teaching young people to hate America.

The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled that the Pledge of Allegiance is constitutional, largely because it’s voluntary, students can opt out. But the reaction of the community in Texas where a kid was punished by the school for not reciting the pledge shows why this voluntary claim is illusory in practice.

There was a time, back when she was with the National Endowment for the Humanities, when I thought Lynne Cheney was a serious intellectual. That time is long gone. Like her husband and her daughter Liz, she’s a tiresome political hack and a right wing shill, as she proved yet again in an interview with …

One of the commercials shown during the Super Bowl was by Coke and it featured a bunch of children singing America the Beautiful in their native language rather than in English. Predictably, the right wing is clutching their pearls and flipping their lids over it. Breitbart, you’re up:

There is nothing in politics that annoys me more than the idiotic and offensive nationalism and jingoism that is so popular on the right. Anyone who doesn’t accept their simple-minded, childish notion of “American exceptionalism” is claimed to hate the country. Here’s Rep. Steve King’s version:

An American Legion post in Illinois is withdrawing its annual contribution to activities at a public park because one of the members of the local parks commission won’t stand and recite the Pledge of Allegiance. And they’re offering this bizarrely incoherent excuse for their decision:

Terry Firma (which I assume must be a nom de blog), writes over at Hemant’s blog about a letter he wrote to the school his daughter attends concerning the recitation of the pledge of allegiance by all the students. I agree with pretty much everything he says. He wrote, in part:

As the American Humanist Association represents a Massachusetts couple challenging the inclusion of the phrase “under God” in the pledge of allegiance, Mary Elizabeth Williams argues at Alternet that we should eliminate the reciting of the pledge completely. I couldn’t agree more.

With all of the obsessive coverage of the birth of the “royal baby” let me say what should be obvious: the monarchy should not exist. No monarchy should exist anywhere for any reason. And while this article goes too far — I certainly wouldn’t put the royal family in prison — and overstates the case, …

I do not recite the pledge of allegiance, ever. I don’t think you should either. And it isn’t just because it says “under God” or because it has clear fascist overtones to it. It’s also because it’s completely dishonest, as Bill Moyers explains far more eloquently than I ever could.

Addicting Info points out something I have mentioned many times over the years with great amusement whenever the Super Patriots start blathering on about the pledge of allegiance: It was written by a socialist. And it was originally accompanied by a Nazi-style salute.

Todd Starnes, Fox News’ Executive Vice President for Pearl Clutching, is having one of his usual tantrums about HGTV offering a tip to use a nylon American flag as a tablecloth for 4th of July picnics and celebrations. ZOMG! That’s a violation of the flag code!

If there is another country in the world that displays the kind of ignorance, xenophobia and nationalism that we find in huge supply in this country, it’s Russia. Another example: They’re now considering a law to ban the use of non-Russian words, especially American ones.

As if we needed another demonstration of the xenophobia and misology of the American right, here’s a story of students in Ft. Collins, Colorado translating the Pledge of Allegiance into other languages and reciting it in those languages from time to time. Cue the outrage from the wingnuts when they got to it in Arabic.

From the Department of Creepy Authoritarian Ideas: A group of Republican legislators in Arizona have proposed a bill to require a loyalty oath — complete with a promise to God — before anyone in that state can graduate from high school. HB 4267 says:
