There is nothing in politics that annoys me more than the idiotic and offensive nationalism and jingoism that is so popular on the right. Anyone who doesn’t accept their simple-minded, childish notion of “American exceptionalism” is claimed to hate the country. Here’s Rep. Steve King’s version:

An American Legion post in Illinois is withdrawing its annual contribution to activities at a public park because one of the members of the local parks commission won’t stand and recite the Pledge of Allegiance. And they’re offering this bizarrely incoherent excuse for their decision:

Terry Firma (which I assume must be a nom de blog), writes over at Hemant’s blog about a letter he wrote to the school his daughter attends concerning the recitation of the pledge of allegiance by all the students. I agree with pretty much everything he says. He wrote, in part:

As the American Humanist Association represents a Massachusetts couple challenging the inclusion of the phrase “under God” in the pledge of allegiance, Mary Elizabeth Williams argues at Alternet that we should eliminate the reciting of the pledge completely. I couldn’t agree more.

As if we needed another demonstration of the xenophobia and misology of the American right, here’s a story of students in Ft. From the Department of Creepy Authoritarian Ideas: A group of Republican legislators in Arizona have proposed a bill to require a loyalty oath — complete with a promise to God — before anyone in that state can graduate from high school. HB 4267 says:

The head of the Mon Valley Republican Committee in Pennsylvania, Brent Kovac, hung an American flag upside down at that committee’s headquarters on the day President Obama was inaugurated for a second term, saying he did it because it’s a sign that the country is in distress:

Fox News has apparently decided that they haven’t been quite xenophobic enough so far and that America’s Olympic athletes just don’t have enough flags on their uniforms. The Tea Party moron they brought on even thinks it’s “anti-American.”
