Ooooh, They Have Questions

As the Christian right continues its hysterical freakout over the Pentagon’s non-existent policy of court-martialing any soldier who utters the word “God” in the presence of another person, this may be the silliest story of all. The Worldnutdaily is asking questions:

Third Rate Christian Right Legal Group Sees $ Signs

With the entirely fictitious claim that the Pentagon is going to court-martial soldiers merely for sharing their faith becoming a mantra on the right, the Liberty Institute, a third tier religious right legal group at best, is seizing on this as a way to get attention and raise funds. And the Worldnutdaily is helping with …

OMG! The Pentagon is Going to Court Martial Christians!

That’s the latest freakout from the usual suspects (Todd Starnes, Breitbart, etc), the claim that a new policy on proselytizing is going to lead to the military court martialing anyone who expresses their Christianity. Like every other freakout they have, it’s total nonsense. Here are the actual regulations from the Air Force:

Nugent Blames Military Suicides on Obama

Ted Nugent and Alex Jones — there’s a match made in whackjob heaven. Nugent went on Jones’ show the other day and made the outlandish and totally unsupported claim that the high suicide rate among veterans is due to Obama violating the constitution so much.

Army Orders Bible Verses on Scopes Removed

The Army has put out instructions that Bible verses etched into scopes on military rifles by the company that produces them be removed. Todd Starnes, who is paid by Fox News to turn every molehill he finds into a mountain, is predictably outraged.

Greenwald’s New Documentary

Glenn Greenwald has done a great job of critiquing the National Security State in print and Robert Greenwald (no relation as far as I know) has a new documentary out called War on Whistleblowers: Free Press and the National Security State. Steven Rosenfeld discusses the documentary on AlterNet.

Richard Perle Runs From Reality

David Corn draws attention to an NPR interview with Richard Perle, who looks — and acts — like a neo-con sith lord and was one of the architects of the invasion of Iraq. And despite the fact that he was wrong about absolutely everything, he refuses to even entertain the obvious question:

Bush, Cheney Distorted Intelligence Data

I know, it’s hardly a revelation that the Bush administration, especially Dick Cheney, distorted the assessments of the intelligence community in order to build a dishonest case for war in Iraq. But one of the members of the CIA team that briefed Cheney on the subject just wrote an article for Wired about her experiences. …

Ten Years Later: The Pre-War Rhetoric

On the 10th anniversary of our invasion of Iraq, it’s certainly worth looking back to see some of the statements made by supporters of that invasion before it began. Paul Wolfowitz, Donald Rumsfeld, President Bush and many others weren’t just wrong, they had invented their own alternate reality that wasn’t even close. Radley Balko offered …

Wolfowitz Admits the Obvious About Iraq War

Paul Wolfowitz, probably the most important driving force behind the invasion of Iraq in 2003, is finally admitting that they may have made some mistakes. But he still thinks it was all worth it and that it would have been far worse if we’d let Saddam Hussein stay in power.

Judis on Political Consensus and the Iraq War

Ten years after we invaded Iraq, it’s worth examining how the decision to invade became a matter of bipartisan consensus at the time. We like to think that it was just Bush and the neo-cons who wanted it, but nearly all the leading lights of the Democratic party supported it too, including both Clintons. John …

Total Cost of the Iraq War Over $6 Trillion?

As we “celebrate” the 10th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, a new report says that the total cost of the war is over $2 trillion when you add together not only the immediate expenses but the ongoing expenses of caring for the veterans who came back with massive physical and psychological injuries. And that’s …

Blackwater Operated as CIA Extension

Eli Lake has been pouring over the documents filed in the prosecution of Blackwater that ended in almost no consequences for that company breaking the law repeatedly, and what he’s found is pretty disturbing. Blackwater operated as an unofficial extension of the CIA around the world.

The Myth of ‘Winning’ Vietnam

Rep. Loui Gohmert, who may well be the single dumbest person in the entire Congress, gave a talk at CPAC on Thursday and delivered a line that has become virtually a mantra on the right, that we could have won Vietnam if only the politicians had allowed it to happen.

Sequestration May Lead to Leaner Military

During the ongoing fight over the sequestration deal, I’ve said several times that I was okay with those cuts going through because it may be our only real opportunity to force reductions in defense spending. The New York Times reports that those cuts may be doing exactly what they should so, force the Pentagon to …
