I reported recently on the study of Oklahoma science teachers, which found that a sizable percentage of them don’t understand evolution well enough to teach it accurately and effectively. Here’s the result: Oklahoma students actually know less about evolution after taking a biology class than they were before.

Cal Thomas was one of the founders of the Moral Majority and has been a longtime right-wing columnist in which he routinely spews incredibly stupid beliefs. Appearing on a Christian TV show recently he spewed some serious nonsense about how public schools are “re-education camps” run by “the enemy” and evolution will lead to killing …

Ray Comfort went on the Janet Mefferd show the other day and it’s a miracle that that much stupidity in one place didn’t create some sort of black hole that sucked the whole solar system into it. He says we’re inviting divine judgment because we teach evolution and that makes us have orgies and stuff.

A new survey of science teachers in Oklahoma confirms what we have long known from many other such surveys, which is that far too many science teachers in our public schools don’t understand the concepts they’re teaching, especially the theory of evolution.

And we have another ignorant right wing candidate for Congress from the state of Minnesota. Aaron Miller is running for the House from Minnesota’s first congressional district against incumbent Democrat Rep. Tim Walz and he says he’s running in order to spare his daughter the horrors of learning about evolution in public schools.

The Balkanist has an article about Harun Yahya (real name: Adnan Oktar), a fabulously rich and absolutely bizarre Muslim creationist from Turkey. He’s been pumping out young earth creationist bullshit for decades, all while putting on a TV show like this one:

You’ve probably heard by now about the idiotic controversy in South Carolina over a little girl’s suggestion that the state name the woolly mammoth the official state fossil. The creationists lost their minds over it and tried to block it, managing to get this bit of educational malpractice into the bill:

Allen Clifton challenged creationists to answer ten questions to see if they could provide an answer that makes any sense at all. Lo and behold, one of them did try to answer them. The result is exactly what you would expect, nonsensical answers and non-answers. A few examples.

Ray Comfort took on Neil deGrasse Tyson and the new Cosmos on his show this week. Talk about trying to punch above your weight class. Even for a young earth creationist, his arguments are breathtakingly stupid. And he has absolutely no idea what science is:

Okay, this is just hilarious to me. Young earth creationists are whining that they’re not allowed to make their case on Neil deGrasse Tyson’s remake of Cosmos. It’s just unfair, you see, that he isn’t giving them equal time on his TV show. You know, like preachers always do in churches by letting scientists rebut …

Right Wing Watch found a video of Michael Peroutka, former presidential candidate of the Constitution Party and a confirmed Christian theocrat, saying that evolution is “dangerous” and “anti-American” that teaching evolution or an old age for the earth is “disloyalty to America.” This video really must be seen to be believed.

Hemant has the story of a 500 page book that a public school science teacher gave to his students to teach them creationism instead of evolution. That was about a decade ago, but the book itself just became available. It’s every bit as bad as you might imagine. This went on for 15 years before …

I had this idea come to me during a discussion in a hangout recently. Imagine for a moment that a defense attorney in a murder case used the kind of argument that young earth creationists use against, say, radiometric dating. In response to every piece of evidence presented, they would name all the “assumptions” being …

The video of the debate between cosmologist Sean Carroll and William Lane Craig is finally up. I haven’t had a chance to watch it yet, but people I respect a lot thought that Carroll really put Craig on the defensive in a way that few others have. Video below the fold.

A high school biology teacher in Goshen, Indiana (just across the Michigan border) has apparently been showing videos from Kent Hovind to his classes. The Freedom From Religion Foundation has written a letter to the school demanding that it be stopped.
