Marriage Equality Coming to Rhode Island

It looks like Rhode Island will join all the other New England states in granting full marriage equality to gay couples. Amazingly, all five Republican members of the Rhode Island Senate are supporting the measure, which is expected to pass the full chamber easily and go on to be signed by the governor.

French Marriages Will Soon Lose Their Sanctity

The French Parliament has approved a bill to legalize same-sex marriage, which means that all heterosexual marriages in that country will soon lose their sanctity, people will stop having or loving their children and their entire society will collapse.

Sexism, LGBT and Sports

James Joyner notes that Brittney Griner, perhaps the greatest women’s basketball player in history, recently mentioned that she is gay and the response was a collective yawn. At the same time, amid reports that as many as four NFL players may come out as gay together soon, gay male athletes face a much different reaction.

Cameron Thinks Gay Men Should Marry Women

I have no idea how this happened, but I seem to have found my way onto Paul Cameron’s mailing list. Cameron is the fanatically anti-gay “researcher” who has been thoroughly discredited and thrown out of professional organizations for his rank dishonesty. In an email I received on Monday, really a press release, he says:

Boy Scouts to Go Halfway on Equality

The Boy Scouts of America appear to be ready to go halfway toward equality, lifting the ban on openly gay teens joining the group but still forbidding gay adults from acting as scout leaders. The matter still has to be voted on by the BSA board:

Ex-’Ex-Gay’ Comes Out Against Reversion Therapy

John Paulk was one of the most prominent faces of the “ex-gay” movement. He and his wife, now estranged, were featured in a Newsweek cover article in 1998 talking about how he had successfully left homosexuality behind and was perfectly straight now. He was the chairman of the board of Exodus International. And now he …

Students Rally for Fired Catholic School Teacher

You may have heard by now that a Catholic school in Ohio fired a longtime teacher at the school because she’s lesbian. And the only reason they even found out about it was because she listed her partner in her mother’s obituary. That led a parent to inform the school and demand that she be …

Barber and the Religious Freedom Canard

Matt Barber of Liberty Counsel is really flogging this meme that you can’t have gay marriage and religious liberty at the same time. In his latest Worldnutdaily column, he seizes on the case of a florist who is expected to actually serve the public.

Santorum: Gay Marriage Stops Straight People From Having Kids

Rick Santorum went on the Bill O’Reilly show and made a monumentally idiotic argument. He claimed that allowing gay people to get married will result, and is already resulting, in straight married couples having fewer kids. Why? I have no idea. Neither does he.

Regnerus Gets His Talking Points

My former colleague at the American Independent News Network, Sofia Resnick, has been doing a lot of digging into that now-infamous parenting study by Mark Regnerus that is now being cited widely by the religious right against same-sex marriage. And she’s been finding some very interesting things. A month ago she reported that the study …

Agema Just Keeps On Going

Dave Agema, the former Michigan state legislature and now a member of the Republican National Committee, is ignoring the first rule of holes. Already getting hammered even by his fellow Republicans for his virulently anti-gay statements, he went on Tony Perkins’ radio show and compared gay people to alcoholics.

Bigots Try the ‘Your Father Would Be So Disappointed’ Approach

Sen. Bob Casey Jr., a centrist Democrat from Pennsylvania who followed in the footsteps of his father, is one of the recent Democratic legislators to have “evolved” on the issue of marriage equality. And the anti-gay bigots want him to know that his father would be very disappointed in him:

Blackwell on the ‘Illiberalism’ of Marriage Equality

Ken Blackwell, former Ohio Secretary of State now working for the Family Research Council, has a rather absurd column in the Washington Times claiming that marriage equality is “illiberal” and that there’s no comparison between the struggles for black civil rights and gay civil rights.

Ellis Washington Comes to Scalia’s Rescue

After the oral argument in the Prop 8 case, I noted Justice Scalia’s rather incoherent question to Ted Olson asking “when did it become unconstitutional to exclude homosexual couples from marriage? 1791? 1868, when the 14th Amendment was adopted?” Olson answered this with another question:

McManus: Gays Trying to Destroy Marriage

As it becomes more and more clear that same-sex marriage is going to be a reality in this country no matter what the Supreme Court does, the Christian right is pulling out all the stops and ratcheting up their rhetoric to absurd levels. Mike McManus of Marriage Savers went on Bryan Fischer’s radio show and …
