NOM: GOP Wouldn’t Survive Marriage Equality Shift

With Republican Party consultants and power brokers increasingly recognizing that the party must become more inclusive, the religious right is frantically trying to preserve its influence over the party platform. Brian Brown of the National Organization for Marriage gave an interview with USA Today in which he said that if the GOP accepted marriage equality, …

Delaware Gets Marriage Equality

Delaware has become the 11th state to guarantee full marriage equality on Tuesday. The state legislature passed it by narrow margins in both chambers and the governor signed it almost immediately. So that’s another state where all straight marriages will immediately become meaningless and all children will be turned into soylent green, or whatever the …

chi-stantis-jason-collins-20130430

Hemant Mehta absolutely nails it when discussing a cartoon that appeared in the Chicago Tribune after NBA player Jason Collins became the first American male athlete in a major sport to come out publicly as gay. The cartoon tried to compare Collins to Tim Tebow:

Alex Jones’ Bizarre Rant on Transgender People

Alex Jones went on an absolutely deranged rant against transgender people on his radio show a few days ago. He went on and on about transgender people puking and shitting all over the walls of…hell, I don’t know where or what he’s talking about. It’s just unhinged:

Garlow Uses Death of Wife to Bash Marriage Equality

Jim Garlow is not the sharpest knife in the drawer. The wingnut preacher from San Diego predicted last year that if Obama was reelected, America would be destroyed. And he recently lose his wife to cancer. Unfortunately, he used that as an opportunity to make an idiotic argument against marriage equality in an email to …

Bisbee, Arizona Wants Civil Unions

Our old friend Radley Balko reports on an attempt by the little town of Bisbee, Arizona to allow civil unions to be performed, something the state says is forbidden and is trying to stop. The state attorney general even filed a lawsuit to stop it, though it has apparently now been settled.

Farah on Jason Collins

Longtime NBA journeyman Jason Collins became the first American male in a major sport to come out as gay the other day and Joseph Farah is none too happy about it. With no evidence whatsoever, he basically accuses Collins of only doing it to pressure teams to keep signing him and to get wealth and …

Wingnut Screed of the Day

As the Boy Scouts of America prepare to change their policy that forbids any openly gay teenager from joining a troop (but maintain the ban on openly gay scout leaders), the bigots are simply losing their minds. This column by Ed Vitigliano of the American Family Association contains my favorite bit of wailing and gnashing …

WA Republican Legislators Want Legal Discrimination

A group of Republican legislators in the state of Washington are trying to pass a law that would explicitly allow businesses to discriminate against LGBT people, all in the name of “sincerely held” religious beliefs. As if the sincerity of a belief is relevant at all.

Same-Sex Weddings…At a Mosque?

When Washington voters approved a referendum last November legalizing same-sex marriage, I bet most people didn’t expect to see them performed at a Muslim mosque. But that is exactly what is happening now, mostly in secrecy because they fear reprisals from the more reactionary members of Islam:

Swanson, Buehner: Gays Are Criminals, Must Be Punished

Kevin Swanson and Dave Buehner continue to stake out the far right fringe of wingnuttia. On their radio show, Generations Radio, they recently endorsed the idea of stoning gay people and said that, at the very least, they should be punished by the government. Oh, and God is going to punish America too (stop me …

Marriage Equality Coming to Rhode Island

It looks like Rhode Island will join all the other New England states in granting full marriage equality to gay couples. Amazingly, all five Republican members of the Rhode Island Senate are supporting the measure, which is expected to pass the full chamber easily and go on to be signed by the governor.
