Biography

After spending several years touring the country as a stand up comedian, Ed Brayton tired of explaining his jokes to small groups of dazed illiterates and turned to writing as the most common outlet for the voices in his head. He has appeared on the Rachel Maddow Show and the Thom Hartmann Show, and is almost certain that he is the only person ever to make fun of Chuck Norris on C-SPAN.

Jindal: Only Senators Get to Cheat

Bobby Jindal apparently thinks that cheating on one’s wife and staying in office is a privilege extended only to senators, not representatives. In the wake of Rep. Vance McAllister getting caught making out with one of his staffers, Jindal thinks he should resign:

My Abiding Love for ‘God’s Not Dead’ (Spoilers)

I finally got to see God’s Not Dead on Saturday night along with Jeremy Beahan, Justin Schieber and Dave Fletcher (3/4 of the Reasonable Doubts guys). I had very high expectations for the movie to shatter the unintentional comedy scale and I was certainly not disappointed. I had a blast, though admittedly it was partly …

The Futility of (Some) Arguments

I regularly take part in Google Hangouts, usually late at night, with an assortment of people from all over the world. Atheists, Christians, deists (well, one deist), you name it. But this weekend I realized after spending two days arguing with the same person that there are some people you just shouldn’t bother debating on …

The Torture Debate in the GOP

Andrew Sullivan makes a really interesting point about Rand Paul running for president, which is that if he does make a run — and he’s obviously going to — it will force the issue of torture out into the open. His opponents will undoubtedly raise the issue to attack him.

Please Help Me Fight a Lawsuit

So it looks like I’m going to be sued by a white supremacist who doesn’t like it that I’ve called him a white supremacist several times over the last few years. I’m not going to go into a lot of detail right now because I need to hire an attorney (one in Texas, unfortunately) and …

L. Ron Hubbard’s Great Grandson Speaks Out

Jamie DeWolf is the great-grandson of L. Ron Hubbard. This is an amazing bit of spoken word about his family history, including how his grandfather was stalked and abused by Hubbard because he left the church and how he had to change his name to escape the destructive legacy. This is incredibly powerful.

Senate Report: CIA Lied to DOJ

More leaks are coming out from the Senate Intelligence Committee’s still-hidden report on the Bush-era torture regime and — surprise, surprise — it concludes that the CIA repeatedly misled the DOJ and their own inspector general about what they were actually doing.

Ooh, a New Anti-Marriage Equality Argument

Josh Charles, who will soon be attending Regent University Law School, promises in this Worldnetdaily column to deliver “the argument against gay marriage you’ve never heard of.” Okay, my interest is piqued. Spoiler alert: It’s not new and it’s really dumb. And here it is:

Louisiana Wants KJV Bible the Official State Book

The Christian right never, ever tires of finding as many ways as possible to get their religious views officially endorsed by the government and here’s another perfect example. The Louisiana legislature wants to pass a law making the King James Version of the Bible the official state book. The FFRF is rightly condemning that action:

Perkins Finds a Poll He Likes

Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council is one of those anti-gay leaders who has tried to keep a stiff upper lip in the face of the overwhelming evidence that the Christian right is losing on gay marriage and gay rights in general. And he’s finally found a poll he likes:

Shapiro Laments the Persecution of Conservatives

Ben Shapiro has long cracked me up. I first saw him a columnist for the Worldnetdaily before he moved on to Breitbart.com and now to Truth Revolt. He’s the far right’s boy wonder. And in his latest column, he’s got an axe to grind with Stephen Colbert.

Today’s Dumbass Politician

It may surprise you to hear that today’s dumbass politician is not a Republican, he’s a Democrat. Rep. Alvin Holmes (D) of Alabama said during a debate on abortion that if the Republicans’ white daughters got pregnant by a black man, they’d support abortion. And then he said this:

Limbaugh Not Happy About Colbert Replacing Letterman

Rush Limbaugh, who only does comedy unintentionally, reacted to the news that Stephen Colbert would be replacing David Letterman by saying that CBS had now “declared war on the heartland of America” and was mounting an “assault on traditional American values.”

Barber Started His Website to Battle Satan

Matt Barber went on Cliff Kincaid’s radio show and said that he created his new website, BarbWire, because he’s “at war with…the Prince of the Earth, Satan himself.” No Matt, you’re at war with rationality. And you’re losing badly.

They…Don’t Wanna Play Sin City

Yes, an anti-apartheid song reference in the title to the post. You’re welcome. Oh, I should explain why it’s there. The Republican National Committee is considering having their 2016 national convention in Las Vegas and some major Christian leaders have written a letter to Reince Priebus telling him not do that.
