Biography

After spending several years touring the country as a stand up comedian, Ed Brayton tired of explaining his jokes to small groups of dazed illiterates and turned to writing as the most common outlet for the voices in his head. He has appeared on the Rachel Maddow Show and the Thom Hartmann Show, and is almost certain that he is the only person ever to make fun of Chuck Norris on C-SPAN.

Russian Anti-LGBT Demonization Leads to Violence

It’s been clear for some time now that Russia’s harsh anti-gay law passed last year is creating an atmosphere that encourages violence against gay people and that the Russian government has little inclination to protect them from it. Right Wing Watch quotes human rights activists on the nature of that atmosphere:

Secularists Fight Sabbath Laws in Israel

Israel is having a similar fight to the one over so-called “blue laws” in the United States in decades past, with secular Jews protesting against laws that forbid businesses from being open on the Jewish sabbath, which is sundown Friday to sundown Saturday.

Alleged Kansas Killer Is an Odin Worshipper

Though we tend to think of white supremacists as Christians, and a whole lot of them are, a fair number of them are also Odin worshippers. The alleged killer in Kansas who opened fire at a pair of Jewish centers last week is one of them. He thinks Christianity is bad because it was invented …

University of Alabama Joins Late 20th Century

The University of Alabama has been dragged kicking and screaming into the mid-1960s, sparking hope that someday they might join the 21st century in a few decades after the student senate approved a resolution calling for fraternities and sororities on campus to be racially integrated. Yes, in 20-freaking-14.

Schlafly: Equal Pay Will Rob Women of Husbands!

Phyllis Schlafly can always be counted on to say incredibly stupid things on pretty much any issue she happens to be talking about at any given moment, especially if it keeps women as second-class citizens. Listen to this appalling argument against equal pay for women:

Hagee: Blood Moons Start of End Times

Early Tuesday morning we had the first of four “blood moons” — eclipses where atmospheric conditions make the moon look blood red — and a whole bunch of Christian conservatives of the premillenial variety have been heralding it as the sign of…well, something really important. John Hagee is one of them.

Trump Still Pretending He Might Run for President

Donald Trump is in the middle of yet another public plea for attention by pretending he might run for president. He went to a New Hampshire event populated by other Republican presidential wannabes like Ted Cruz, Rand Paul and Mike Huckabee and talked about something he undoubtedly knows all about:

Swanson: Gay People are Like Axe Murderers and Cannibals

The thoroughly unhinged Kevin Swanson is quite upset with Nabisco for using a same-sex couple in one of their commercials. And in the course of his usual idiotic screed he compares gay people to both axe murderers and cannibals. Oh, and Nabisco will suffer for their insolence.

Beck’s Bizarre View on the Nevada Standoff

Over the weekend, Glenn Beck wrote an open letter about the standoff in Nevada. On the plus side, he is firmly against the far-right gun nuts flocking there to take on the evil gummint. On the minus side…wow, is it a weird, incoherent diatribe. Seriously, see if you can make any sense at all out …

Perkins, Huckabee Display Boycott Hypocrisy

One of the most amusing things to me about the Christian right is how utterly oblivious they are to their own contradictions (alternatively, how cravenly dishonest they are about them). On Tony Perkins’ radio show, he and Mike Huckabee said that Christian conservatives would never target a company over its support of gay rights. Yes, …

Barber’s Site Features Christian Reconstructionist

Is there any limit to how extreme Matt Barber’s new site BarbWire can get? Apparently not. They’ve got a genuine Christian Reconstructionist, Lee Duigon, writing for them now. And he thinks Christians who aren’t anti-gay enough — and to a Reconstructionist, I assume that means Christians who don’t think they should be stoned to death …

Schlichter: Democrats Will Go Full Atheist Soon

Kurt Schlichter, whose very first credit on his bio is that he was “personally recruited to write conservative commentary by Andrew Breitbart” (not terribly impressive, I’m afraid) writes at Townhall.com that by 2024, the Democratic Party will be officially atheist. The column is pretty much the God’s Not Dead movie, or a Chick tract, turned …

Why a GOP Senate Takeover Does Matter

A few weeks ago I opined that a Republican takeover of the Senate wouldn’t change much of anything because the House already stands in the way of almost anything Obama wants to do. But Jonathan Chait points out that there’s one role specific to the Senate that could be a very big deal if the …

None Dare Call It Torture

With the Senate Intelligence Committee’s vote to declassify part of the 6000+ word report on the Bush torture regime, the media is once again reporting on the issue — and once again almost entirely refusing to call it torture. All they want to use are euphemisms:

Bill Russell Sees Parallels Between Race and Sexual Orientation in Sports

I don’t have a lot of heroes but Bill Russell might qualify. He’s not only one of the greatest basketball players ever, he’s also a man who showed tremendous courage and integrity in dealing with racial backlash in Boston, at the time one of the more racist cities in the country. And he says that …
