Biography

After spending several years touring the country as a stand up comedian, Ed Brayton tired of explaining his jokes to small groups of dazed illiterates and turned to writing as the most common outlet for the voices in his head. He has appeared on the Rachel Maddow Show and the Thom Hartmann Show, and is almost certain that he is the only person ever to make fun of Chuck Norris on C-SPAN.

Wingnut: Obama Should Admit to Being First Gay President

(Former) Coach Dave Daubenmire, John Freshwater’s buddy who thinks that the job of a football coach at a public high school is to convert his players to Christianity, continues to pollute the world with his stupidity and bigotry. In this video, he demands that President Obama come out of the closet as the first gay …

Schlafly’s Ignorance of History

Phyllis Schlafly repeats the same xenophobia of earlier generations in her most recent column at the Eagle Forum website. She says that unlike the Jewish, Irish and Italian immigrants of the past, modern immigrants don’t really want to be Americans and be patriotic:

Barton: AIDS is God’s Punishment

David Barton is reiterating what he has said many times before, that God sent AIDS and continues to send new diseases to punish people for sin, especially homosexuality. And yet it will not cost him one bit of the political influence has in the Republican party.

E.W. Jackson: Vote for Me is a Vote for God

The new Republican nominee for lt. governor in Virginia is a serious nutball. Here’s a video of a message he sent to Virginia churches when he was running for the senate, telling them that a vote for him is a vote “for the glory of God.” Here’s a partial transcript:

Afghan Parliament Refuses to Protect Women

The Afghan parliament could not pass a law to provide the most basic protections for women because of opposition from Muslim fundamentalists. I’m sure it will come as a shock to hear that they objected to the bill and killed it because it was opposed to their Islamic “values.”

Farah’s Prayer Rally Already Producing Miracles!

You gotta hand it to Joseph Farah and the Worldnutdaily. When he decides to focus on a story or an event, he can beat that horse until it’s so dead that even flies wouldn’t touch it. Take his 9/11 prayer and fasting rally, which his site is promoting with a new story nearly every day. …

FBI Investigating Bachmann Now

Things just went from bad to worse for Rep. Michele Bachmann. In addition to the FEC and the Office of Congressional Ethics, the FBI has now joined the investigations into campaign finance violations during her failed 2012 presidential run.

WTF, Ann Althouse?

We’re used to the true wingnuts saying batshit crazy things about Obama, but Ann Althouse is not some Tea Party crank, she’s a law professor at the University of Wisconsin. And she tries to turn this umbrella bullshit into some weird and vague emotional narrative about Obama. She does a search of Dreams From My …

The 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

This weekend I continued my long love/hate affair with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as the 2013 induction ceremony aired on HBO. There is much to hate, especially in the long list of bands that should have been inducted long ago. But I still love the inductions every year — especially this year …

Keyes: Obama Working With Terrorists

On Planet Wingnuttia, where no conspiracy theory is too crazy as long as it discredits Obama, Alan Keyes really should be elected the Grand Poobah or something. In his latest bit of stupid and crazy, he says that Obama is working with the terrorists to destroy America and impose martial law.

Beck: IRS Scandal to Cover Up Benghazi

While most wingnuts are claiming that the IRS scandal is a horrible injustice for which Obama should be impeached, Glenn Beck says the opposite — that the administration deliberately sparked the IRS scandal in order to distract attention away from Benghazi. Hey, whatever works — it can be X and ~X at the same time …

Virginia’s All-Wingnut Gubernatorial Ticket

It’s frightening enough that Ken Cuccinelli won the Republican nomination for governor of Virginia, but the candidate for lt. governor, Bishop E.W. Jackson (not the same as Bishop Harry Jackson, but just as crazy) may be even worse. This may be the single craziest wingnut ticket ever put together. ThinkProgress has a list of some …

This is What Atheists Don’t Support

Someone on Google+ posted a link to this weird post on a Christian apologetics blog claiming that atheists support the idea of supplying soldiers with “comfort women” — women whose sole job during WW2 for the Japanese was to provide sexual release for the troops.

Russian Orthodox Thugs Threaten Gays

A group of Russian Orthodox thugs took to the streets of Tblisi in the nation of Georgia to threaten gay people and demand strict repression in advance of a planned gay pride event. More than a dozen people were injured. See how familiar this sounds:

A Terrible Juliet-Juliet Prosecution

A few years ago, Todd Heywood and I did a lot of reporting on so-called Romeo and Juliet relationships and how the use of statutory rape laws against young people who are just over 18 with a girlfriend or boyfriend under 18. Here’s a horrible story of a Juliet-Juliet prosecution that threatens to ruin the …
