Biography

After spending several years touring the country as a stand up comedian, Ed Brayton tired of explaining his jokes to small groups of dazed illiterates and turned to writing as the most common outlet for the voices in his head. He has appeared on the Rachel Maddow Show and the Thom Hartmann Show, and is almost certain that he is the only person ever to make fun of Chuck Norris on C-SPAN.

OH Teacher Fired for Racist Statement to Student

Remember the teacher from Fairfield, Ohio who was accused of telling a black student who said he wanted to be president that we didn’t need another black president after Obama? He’s been fired after a state investigation found his version of the story lacked credibility.

Klayman’s Delusions of Grandeur

Larry Klayman really is endlessly amusing to me. He really does seem to believe that he’s leading a “second American revolution,” which is absolutely hilarious. The self-delusion is almost touching, especially as he pretends that his rally in Lafayette Park last November did anything other than spread a little litter around.

Stedman on ‘Atheism Without Works’

Chris Stedman’s latest column expresses a position I have come to hold more and more strongly over the last year or so, which is that atheists and humanists need to build communities and engage in service projects that help better the human condition locally, nationally and globally. He makes the argument that Dale McGowan has …

Is ‘Cell Block Psychic’ a New Low for ‘Psychics’ and TV?

Television these days is mostly a vast wasteland of stupidity but this new show may take the cake: Cell Block Psychic features “psychic” con artist Vicki Monroe talking with convicted murderers to put them in touch with the “spirits” of their victims.

OK Students Less Knowledgeable About Evolution After Class

I reported recently on the study of Oklahoma science teachers, which found that a sizable percentage of them don’t understand evolution well enough to teach it accurately and effectively. Here’s the result: Oklahoma students actually know less about evolution after taking a biology class than they were before.

Guest Post: Secular Collaboration for Everyone

This is a guest post by John Shook, who has started a fascinating new project called Partners for Secular Activism (PSA). It’s an online platform for classes that teach about skepticism, atheism and related topics. In this post, he explains exactly what the plans are and who is involved.

Suit Filed Over NJ Refusing Atheist License Plate

Remember when David Silverman tried to get a personalized license plate in New Jersey that said ATHE1ST? They eventually relented on that but have now denied another resident a similar plate and Americans United for Separation of Church and State have filed a lawsuit over it.

Bigoted SC Mayor Fires Gay Police Chief

Latta, South Carolina Mayor Earl Bullard is taking a lot of flak after firing the city’s police chief, a lesbian woman who has been on the force there for two decades and who had, coincidentally I’m sure, recently concluded that Bullard had failed to do a background check on an appointee who allegedly had improperly …

Jonathan Cahn Hearts Putin Too

Jonathan Cahn, the Worldnetdaily’s favorite end times charlatan (he’s leading a tour of Israel with Joseph Farah soon) is the latest wingnut to sing the praises of Vladimir Putin and Russia as the vanguard of Christianity in opposition to the godless west.

Abramoff: SCOTUS Doesn’t Understand How Money Corrupts

In the wake of the Supreme Court’s latest blow to any limits on campaign financing in this country, convicted felon and former lobbyist Jack Abramoff says the justices are naive and do not understand how the influence of big money corrupts our political system.

KKK Shooter Had Role in Anti-Gay Murder

For several years I had the privilege of being the editor for reporter Todd Heywood with the Michigan Messenger. He’s now broken a potentially huge story about Frazier Glenn Miller, the former KKK leader who allegedly killed three people at a pair of Jewish centers in Kansas last weekend. Turns out he may have played …

March for Marriage 2: Electric Boogaloo

After last year’s March for Marriage was a massive failure (fewer people showed up than for the Reason Rally), the National Organization for Marriage is now planning March for Marriage 2: Electric Boogaloo for June 19. That’s a month after a few hundred wingnuts who think they’re 20 million strong are planning to remove Obama …

Cal Thomas’ Inane Views on Evolution

Cal Thomas was one of the founders of the Moral Majority and has been a longtime right-wing columnist in which he routinely spews incredibly stupid beliefs. Appearing on a Christian TV show recently he spewed some serious nonsense about how public schools are “re-education camps” run by “the enemy” and evolution will lead to killing …

Beck Loves Him Some Matt Blevin

Matt Blevin, the Tea Party candidate challenging Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, is attracting support from Glenn Beck. In fact, Beck says that Blevin is just like the founders and that if he isn’t elected, McConnell will make sure that The Blaze and other conservative sites are shut down. Wha? Yeah, I know.

Ray Comfort Warns of Divine Judgment

Ray Comfort went on the Janet Mefferd show the other day and it’s a miracle that that much stupidity in one place didn’t create some sort of black hole that sucked the whole solar system into it. He says we’re inviting divine judgment because we teach evolution and that makes us have orgies and stuff.
