Biography

After spending several years touring the country as a stand up comedian, Ed Brayton tired of explaining his jokes to small groups of dazed illiterates and turned to writing as the most common outlet for the voices in his head. He has appeared on the Rachel Maddow Show and the Thom Hartmann Show, and is almost certain that he is the only person ever to make fun of Chuck Norris on C-SPAN.

Justice Kennedy States the Obvious

Justice Anthony Kennedy addressed the annual conference of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals a few days ago and said something that is obviously true but is bound to make a lot of conservatives lose their mind. Actually, he said two things that will do that. The first:

The Onion Takes On Abortion TRAP Laws

The Onion has an article that is just barely a parody of Target Regulation of Abortion Providers (TRAP) laws. TRAP laws are designed to put onerous and unnecessary restrictions on abortion clinics to force them to shut down, as has happened with dozens of clinics around the country already.

Gimme That Old Time Klingenschmitt ‘Logic’

Gordon Klingenschmitt has a powerful and compelling argument for why trans women should not be allowed to use the women’s bathroom: “The Scriptures say in Deuteronomy 23 that he that is wounded in the stones, or hath his privy member cut off, shall not enter into the congregation of the Lord. And if they can’t …

Pastor: Gays Possessed by ‘Putrid Smelling Demons’

In one of the most deranged anti-gay columns you’ll ever read, Pastor Bert Ferias of Holy Fires Ministries asks gay people to “please do not get upset with me” for speaking “very plainly and straightforward (sic) about homosexuality.” And then he launches on a long screed that includes this:

Gina Miller Wants God to Remove Obama From Office

Gina Miller is losing hope. She really, really wants Obama to be impeached but knows that isn’t going to happen, so she’s reduced to praying that God himself will see to it that the Kenyan Marxist Muslim will be frogmarched out of the White House in handcuffs.

Wingnut: 2nd Amendment Purpose to Repel Child Refugees

Jody Hice, the extremely far right House candidate in Georgia, knows what the First Amendment was for — repelling the “invasion” of helpless child refugees. And since the government won’t go down to the border and, presumably, shoot or threaten them, he thinks people should go do it themselves.

Benham Group Disrupts UU Service in New Orleans

Flip Benham’s Operation Save America, one of the most extreme anti-choice organizations in the country, disrupted a service at a Unitarian church in New Orleans this weekend, interrupting a moment of silence for a recently passed church member to shout about “abominations” and the like. They were shown the door. Here’s how Benham’s group described …

Nurse Refuses to Do Job She Applied For, Files Lawsuit

One thing that happened last week while I was busy with the conference was a soon-to-be nurse applied for a position with a family planning clinic, told them she would refuse to prescribe some forms of contraception and then sued them for refusing to hire her for the job she refused to do. The ADF, …

A Really Bad Reason to Ban Circumcision

There is a growing movement in this country and around the world to ban male circumcision, but a legislator in Zimbabwe has come up with the worst justification ever for doing so: Because the foreskin can be used in witchcraft to curse people.

A New Face for the ‘Ex-Gay’ Movement

Candace Chellew-Hodge writes at Religion Dispatches about David Kyle Foster, the new face of the “ex-gay” movement. They need a new face, of course, because so many of the old faces have abandoned that ruse and admitted to, or been caught, still being gay despite having sold the ex-gay con for decades.

Christian Right Again Argues For Discrimination

Much like the Christian right always argues against a specific court ruling by railing against judicial review itself, it also argues against a specific anti-discrimination restriction by arguing against all such restrictions — but they never actually acknowledge that they’re doing so. Here’s the Family Research Council’s reaction to President Obama forbidding anti-gay discrimination in …

Florida Same-Sex Marriage Ban Overturned

Last week, a state judge in Florida overturned that state’s ban on same-sex marriage and the reaction from the Christian right was exactly what you would expect. The judge’s jurisdiction includes the Florida Keys, which seems entirely appropriate.

Defending the Indefensible

A guy I know on Google+ posted something about the Amazing Atheist, TJ Kincaid, and I commented and said “let’s hope that this creepy fuckstain called the ‘Amazing Atheist’ doesn’t threaten to rape her as he’s done to more than one woman in the past. You really shouldn’t be promoting a fucking asshole like this.” …

Humanism at Work Conference Goes Wonderfully

So as most of you probably know, I planned my first conference last weekend, the Humanism at Work conference for the Foundation Beyond Belief. It went far better than I could possibly have hoped and, despite my near-total exhaustion, I am very proud and thrilled about the entire experience.

Farah Doesn’t Like Claims of Distraction

Joseph Farah is quite upset that so many Republicans, including hardcore conservatives like Dick Cheney, claim that impeaching Obama would be a “distraction.” He quotes several of them saying that, pointing out that since the Senate won’t do it, it would just draw attention from other things.
