Biography

After spending several years touring the country as a stand up comedian, Ed Brayton tired of explaining his jokes to small groups of dazed illiterates and turned to writing as the most common outlet for the voices in his head. He has appeared on the Rachel Maddow Show and the Thom Hartmann Show, and is almost certain that he is the only person ever to make fun of Chuck Norris on C-SPAN.

David Barton Lies. Film at 11.

David Barton is a liar. That’s been well-established. I don’t mean he sometimes gets things wrong, I mean he lies — constantly, flagrantly and repeatedly. His latest lie, which he’s told before, is that “the Obama administration has refused to prosecute any child pornography.”

Leaked Frat Emails Reveal Dudebro Life

For anyone who thinks there’s no such thing as rape culture or that misogyny isn’t a serious problem in our society, I would suggest reading the leaked emails and text messages from an unofficial fraternity at American University filled with future power brokers in business and government. It’s pretty appalling.

The Bundy Ranch Story is an Old One

Tom Kenworthy at Think Progress goes into the long history of attempts by ranchers like Cliven Bundy to get out of federal grazing fees and the attendant “range war” rhetoric that often goes along with those attempts. They never actually win because the law is crystal clear.

Nothing Says Easter Like White Supremacy

The same people behind the White Man March, or their supporters, are apparently the ones who snuck in Easter eggs that contained white supremacist messages at a neighborhood Easter egg hunt on Sunday. Because nothing says Easter like racist assholes.

Appeals Court Orders Release of Drone Strike Memo

A three-judge panel of the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled unanimously that the Obama administration must release portions of the legal memo used to justify the drone strike that killed American citizens Anwar al-Awlaki in Yemen in 2011. The Obama administration has been fighting this tooth and nail, of course.

Franklin Graham Loves Putin Too

The love affair between the anti-gay Christian right and Vladimir Putin continues. Franklin Graham, the son of Billy Graham, went on ABC News on Sunday and praised Putin’s anti-gay crusade as him doing the right thing for Russia, as though the right thing for Russia was different than the right thing for America.

But Don’t Worry, Racism No Longer Exists

A new study confirms how much race still affects even those who undoubtedly do not view themselves as racist and are not viewed that way by others (which means most of us, of course). It was a rather clever study where they submitted the same writing sample to 60 partners in law firms, with half …

No, Easter is Not Based on Ishtar

Leading up to Easter last weekend I saw a whole lot of people on my Facebook friends list sharing a meme saying that Easter “was originally the celebration of Ishtar, the Assyrian and Babylonian goddess of fertility and sex.” It was posted by the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science on their Facebook page …

Russian Nationalist’s Vile Attack on a Journalist

If you think Vladimir Putin is bad (and he is), Vladimir Zhironovsky may be even worse. A far-right Russian nationalist, Zhironovsky over the weekend made a disgusting attack on a female journalist who asked an entirely reasonable question at a press conference about possible Russian sanctions against the Ukraine and against another woman who questioned …

Political Draft Committee Raises Millions

There are either a lot of people or a few very rich people who really, really want Ben Carson to run for president. A committee to draft him to run for president, the National Draft Ben Carson for President Committee, has raised more than $2 million despite having no association with him and his repeated …

‘Ex-Gay’: I’m a Threat to Satan

Janet Boynes, Michele Bachmann’s favorite “ex-gay” activist, went on the Steve Deace show and said that homosexuality is really all about a huge battle between God and Satan and that Satan is attacking her because she’s such a threat to his side of that battle.

The Unending Irony of Glenn Beck

Glenn Beck’s total lack of self-awareness is truly awe-inspiring. On his show last week he criticized a Nebraska state senate candidate for associating with Grover Norquist who is “truly one of the most dangerous men supposedly on our side.” And he cautions that people ought to know all about the people they’re standing up with …

NV Republican Deluded About the Youth Vote

The Nevada Republican Party recently decided to remove anti-choice and anti-gay language from their platform, prompting Republican state legislator Ira Hansen to go on the Janet Mefferd show and claim that the real way to appeal to younger voters is to embrace the “Pat Robertson wing” of the GOP.

Is There Anything the Right Won’t Politicize?

As you probably heard, Chelsea Clinton announced that she and her husband are expecting their first child later this year. Predictably, some on the right are trying to turn it into a political issue. Steve Malzberg, for example, says that this was timed deliberately to help Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.

Did Michigan Just Cause a Constitutional Convention?

Last month the Michigan state legislature approved a resolution calling for a new constitutional convention to rewrite the U.S. Constitution. About 20 other states have recently voted to do so as well, but at least one scholar thinks that number is 34 because of really old votes to do so from decades ago:
