Emails From Florida GOP Reveal Truth About Gerrymandering

You may remember that a few months ago a Florida court overturned the legislative maps drawn up by the Republican-controlled legislature. Now some of the evidence in that case, emails to and from Republican consultants and legislators, reveal how they tried to cover up their role in drawing districts explicitly to help Republicans by packing black voters into single districts.

Dumbass Visits Field Museum, Engages in Dumbassery

Megan Fox is a “lifestyle” reporter for PJ Media, the right-wing online “news” source. Her bio calls her a “homeschooling mom to her three children and happy wife to her husband of fourteen years.” And apparently she thinks that makes her qualified to go to the Field Museum and point out all the “bias.”

Santorum: We’ve Never Dealt With Anything Like Immigration Order

Rick Santorum is spewing a frothy mix of stupidity and dishonesty in his reaction to Obama’s immigration orders. He lies and says, “we’ve never dealt with anything like this before.” You know, other than all the other times it was done by previous presidents and upheld by the courts. If not for all those examples, it would be totally unprecedented.

Join the Humanist Service Corps

One of the things I’m most proud of in my work with the Foundation Beyond Belief is the development of the Humanist Service Corps, made possible by the Pathfinders project. Conor Robinson, Wendy Webber and Ben Blanchard spent a year doing projects around the world and Conor is now recruiting the first members of the HSC to return to Ghana and work in the infamous witch camps for 6-12 months. This is a great opportunity to put your humanist values into real action on the ground. You’d be working on clean water, housing, healthcare, poverty abatement, infrastructure-building, and community education projects, all aimed at improving the lives of people who have been banished from their families and villages and forced to live in squalor because of a misguided belief in witchcraft. You can apply here.

Kobach Revives the ‘Obama phone’ bullshit

Kris Kobach, the far-right, vote-suppressing secretary of state of Kansas, on the same show on which he pondered the idea that Latinos would engage in ethnic cleansing of whites once they’re in the majority, also revived that idiotic Obama phone bullshit. Because apparently he didn’t think he was already being quite racist enough.

Daubenmire: Christians Can’t Let Gays Come Out of the Closet

Dave Daubenmire sounded a lot like a Christian Reconstructionist fascist in a recent video, saying that as soon as Christians accepted that it was okay not to imprison people for sodomy, same-sex marriage became inevitable. He doesn’t actually endorse stoning gays explicitly, but he does say that God’s standards never change:

Ferguson, MO and America’s Racist Criminal Justice System

As depressingly expected, the grand jury in St. Louis County, Missouri did not indict Darren Wilson, the police officer who shot Michael Brown 12 times from a great distance. Also as depressingly expected, the result was more violence and destruction as protests turned into riots. I’m not going to say much about this specific case because I think we need to take a step back and see it is but a single symptom of a much deeper problem within our criminal justice system.

Montana Clerks Allowed to Refuse Marriage Licenses for Gay Couples

Last week a federal court overturned Montana’s ban on same-sex marriage and gay couples are now allowed to get married. But as in other states, some clerks think they should be excused from issuing licenses to them because of their religion. Unlike other states so far, they’re being allowed to refuse to serve the public.

House Finally Files Pointless Lawsuit Against Obama

After many months of claiming they were going to sue President Obama without specifying what they were going to sue him for, exactly, the House Republicans have finally gotten around to filing a suit that will almost certainly be dismissed quickly. The Washington Post outlines some of the reasons the suit will fail:
