Westboro Baptist Church Now Protesting Has-Beens

Apparently running out of things to protest, the Westboro Baptist Church has announced that they’re going to protest a Goo Goo Dolls concert in Buffalo. The band is probably excited about this because it’s the most attention they’ve gotten in over a decade. I look forward to seeing the WBC go to Branson to protest the equally irrelevant Tony Orlando next.

    Has “has been” become a non-derogatory, neutral term? Because I don’t know what either the Goo Goo Dolls or Tony Orlando has done to warrant being disparaged beyond “liking to make music even though they aren’t super popular” or “making music I personally don’t like.” Are they desperate attention seekers or something?

    I have never understood why Ed insists on being an ass to entertainers, but he does it a lot. I don’t know if he’s that desperate for a cheap laugh at somebody else’s expense or if it’s more of the blatant insecurity he obviously still has over being a failed comedian, but either way he should know that mocking somebody for failing to fill stadiums on their headline tours after twenty years as a successful rock band comes off as more pathetic than funny.

    “…it’s the most attention they’ve gotten in over a decade.”

    not if you’re anywhere within a 50-mile radius of Buffalo.

    So what exactly have the Dolls done to piss the WBC off? If this is the best they can do, I foresee their activism pretty much dying out before 2025.

    If it’s because one or more of their members is gay, it amuses me to think that they likely would not dare to protest a Judas Priest concert. Metalheads can get *nasty.*

    @Forestdragon
    That’s absolute nonsense, metalheads are by and large of very good humor. They usually try to convert and pass out bibles in front of Wacken open air, and the worst these people get is silly pictures taken with drunk people.

    WBC also announced they were going to picket the funeral of Mike Brown. Have they released the photoshopped pictures yet?

    Tony Orlando and the Go Go Dolls shouldn’t be criticize because they are “has-beens” or “irrelevant.” They should be criticized because they put out unlistenable music.

    *Juggaloes excepted.

    Same thing; either way, you are simply criticising the band for not being to your personal taste. Which is stupid.

  9. Alex says

    @Holms

    Do you live in a universe where Juggaloes are metalheads??! Because I sure don’t…

    I have to agree with the passing out part. Heck, I’ve seen metalheads pass out quite successfully, sometimes for hours, and then afterwards comment on what a wonderful party they’d been to.

    And even in the “protesting has-beens” department, they manage to stay consistently wrong — the Goo Goo Dolls really aren’t that bad a band. Why can’t they protest Steven Segal or Jenny McCarthy instead?

  12. Alex says

    @lordshipmayhem
    That double meaning was totally intended! *cough*. And yes, they tend to do that. But then again, they are mostly peaceful drunks, if you don’t count incoherently bellowing Slayer lyrics as violence.

  13. Holms says

    @Alex
    Send me a postcard from wherever you live? I’ve never made contact with a person from another universe before.

  14. dan4 says

    @11″…you are simply criticizing the band for not being to your personal taste.”

    Uh, and problem with that is….?

  15. Holms says

    @17
    Well there wouldn’t be a problem ordinarily, except that you use the difference in musical taste as a reason for abuse.

  16. dan4 says

    @18: What? I wrote their music was “unlistenable.” You must be quite the wilting flower to consider criticism like that “abusive.”

  17. dan4 says

    Btw, labeling my initial criticism (@11) as “stupid” is probably more verbally “abusive” than labeling certain music as “unlistenable.”

  18. Holms says

    This may amaze you dan4, but different people can be interested in different things. Plainly, you and the Goo Goo Dolls have different music tastes, but I don’t see why that is a reason to mock them. So, replace ‘abusive’ with ‘insulting’.

  19. dan4 says

    @21: “This may amaze you dan4, but different people can be interested in different things.”

    And yet you have a problem with me labeling certain music as “unlistenable” (a fairly tame criticism that somehow, for some reason, gets you bent out of shape). Self-awareness and Holms: you two should meet sometime.

  20. dan4 says

    @24: So you (indirectly, through your link) call me a “fuckwad.” So let’s review, boys and girls: saying someone lacks self-awareness: “snide putdown.” Labeling someone as a “fuckwad:” NOT a “snide putdown.” Got that?

  21. Holms says

    If by ‘indirectly calling you a fuckwad’ you mean ‘pointing out the fact that many people, including you, have vastly worse behavior when on the internet than in meatspace’, then yes.

  22. dan4 says

    @25: “…vastly worse behavior when on the internet than in meatspace…”

    Like calling someone a “fuckwad,” for instance. Wow, you sure are disproving my earlier claim that you lack self-awareness!
