Bachmann Wants 100% Tax on Immigrants. Well, Some of Them.

Michele Bachmann continues her disgusting and blatantly racist campaign against Latino immigration with some appalling statements during a conference call with an anti-immigration group last week. She wants a 100% tax on money they might send back to their families — but only in Latin America.

“When are we going to get serious and really deport and deport right on the border?” Bachmann asked.

“Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala, those countries are laughing at us because they’re making money with their corrupt governments in conjunction with these international criminal cartels, they’re all making money and kickbacks,” she said. “What I believe we should do is have a 100 percent tax on remittances, the money that illegal aliens send back to these countries.”

Let’s start with the ridiculous reasoning before we get to the racism. Does she think Latino immigrants who come here send money back to the governments or to criminal cartels? No, they send money back to their families, who are often desperately poor. What that has to do with corrupt governments or cartels is beyond me. And why only those countries? This is how immigration has worked for the last two centuries, including European immigrants to the United States.

Greek, Italian, Polish, and Irish immigrants, among many others, did the same thing, came here to establish themselves, sent money back or saved money to bring other members of their families over here. They often built businesses and then helped set up their family members in other businesses. This is an immeasurably good thing, both for them and for the country (just imagine how much less interesting just the food culture in this country would be without it). But she only wants to prevent that in “these countries,” meaning Latin American countries. Funny how it’s just fine when white people do it, but not when dark-skinned people do it.

“What we have to recognize is this truly is a war against the American people,” she added.

I’m so fucking tired of hearing this talk of immigration being a “war” or an “invasion.” These are people coming here to make a better life for themselves. They’re not an invading army, for fuck’s sake.

    lol

Aren’t these people believers in Supply Side Economics? Doesn’t that mean that the government would end up seeing exactly none of that money?

While we are at it we can tax at 100%:

    1. The money that the 1% send offshore. It’s a lot, maybe trillions. Romney has a $100 million IRA in…Bermuda.

    2. The money that corporations send offshore, especially to avoid taxes. It’s also a lot.

“What I believe we should do is have a 100% tax” on the obscene profits that American-owned companies send back to the United States from the myriad countries whose natural resources and cheap labour they exploit.

What others said, apparently ‘freedom’ is when rich people can send the money and the jobs anywhere they want, but a brown person cannot be allowed the same freedom.

I wonder what would happen if someone suggested NAFTA copy the EU policy of including free movement of labour as part of free trade?

Finally! A tax that the Tea Party actually favors. Although she presumably would want an equivalent reduction in spending somewhere else, like all those government programs that prevent poor people from (eating, getting medical care, getting an education, getting housing) totally on their own, like she did.

The political ads practically write themselves. “Republican politicians want to tax YOUR remittances at 100%!” Ah, Republicans. They give themselves such a huge advantage by being evil, but then they squander it by being stupid.

But they’re are taking all the low-paying poverty-level jobs the formerly middle class people should be working at so the 1% can have that second yacht subsidized.

Does that silly woman have any clue what she would be paying for a pound of steak or a gallon of milk if it weren’t for the undocumented folks getting them from farm to grocery store?

Is there any way she and her her idiot family can be deported, preferably to a planet 1000 light years away with meat eating creatures on it. I realize I am only asking for the impossible, but the thought is ok

The first question that comes to my mind is how they would even collect it. Aren’t most illegal immigrants paid under the table and/or using false SS numbers? Does Bachmann want the NSA to intercept all wire transfers to Latin America? Does she want the Post Office to screen all mail going to Mexico for money orders?

“Does Bachmann want the NSA to intercept all wire transfers to Latin America? Does she want the Post Office to screen all mail going to Mexico for money orders?”. Yes, if she was able to think of that much detail. Unfortunately, there are more insidious demons who can.

    Eric Hoffer nailed it:

Should Americans begin to hate foreigners wholeheartedly, it will be an indication that they have lost confidence in their own way of life.

No. Her political ideas have little or no intersection with reality. (Sorry, I like answering rhetorical questions.)

Oh, sure you say that now; wait until the first battalion of brown people with weed eaters and paleta carts roll down Main Street in your town. What will you do to save your mom and her apple pie then, Ed?

Can we haz a tax on stupid? – Doubting Thomas@3

We haz one in teh yoo-kay. It’s called the “National Lottery”, and paying it is entirely voluntary, yet millions do so! (Hat-tip: Henry Fielding: “A lottery is a taxation, upon all the fools in creation”.)
