James Dobson Researches Naughty Sex

Hemant found this amusing video of James Dobson talking about what he learned as a member of an anti-pornography commission. He describes the horrible things he saw in porn magazines at a sex shop in New York to an audience that is suitably shocked. Hemant’s favorite part:

My favorite part is where he talks about three women doing “everything possible for three women to do to each other” during a sex show, before adding that he didn’t dare go upstairs to see two men together. Because gay dudes are icky, but watching lesbians = research for Jesus.

My favorite part is where he says that “softcore pornography is to hardcore pornography what marijuana is to heroin and cocaine.” Which must mean it has no relationship at all, since only a miniscule percentage of people who use marijuana go on to use heroin and cocaine. The Christian right does love their slippery slopes. Oh, and Prince masturbating the neck of his guitar is apparently a huge threat to the republic.

    Re Dr X @ #1

This happened 30 years ago which was long before there was an Internet as we know it. Dobson was a member of the Meese commission which was formed by the latter when he was Attorney General under Ronnie the rat.

This reminds me of a scene in the documentary film “God Loves Uganda” where Pastor Martin Ssempa shows gay pornography in his church in Kampala as part of his fight to “kick sodomy out of Uganda”. The congregation appear to be suitably horrified at his graphic and wildly wrong descriptions of what those naughty gays get up to.

When not busy daemonizing homosexuals in Uganda, “Pastor” Ssempa rests his weary bones in his upscale digs in Las Vegas.

And what a surprise, in 2010, Dobson’s Family Research Council, in an attempt to kill a US Congress bill condemning the Uganda Anti-Homosexuality Bill paid $25,000 to congressional lobbyists for what they described as “Res.1064 Ugandan Resolution Pro-homosexual promotion” in a lobbying disclosure report. The US House of Representatives resolution condemned the Uganda Anti-Homosexuality Bill, a bill which, among other things, would have imposed either the death penalty or life imprisonment for sexual relations between persons of the same sex.

I just love the audience reaction close ups of those earnest faces betraying not a trace of healthy skepticism.

Back when rocks were still soft, I went to one of Charles Keating’s Citizens For Decent Somethongorother to see what the other side was up to. The slide show in the middle of his talk (remember when a “slide” was something you could hold in your hand?) quickly descended into chaos, with people shouting “Go back to the last one” and the like. Prurient interest on parade, it was.

I’m sure he was looking at them lez pictures long and hard, taking one for Jesus so we didn’t have to, all the while softly moaning “Oh, god! Oh, god!”.

“…to brief them on the things he had learned. We knew you would want to be present.”

LOL! Didn’t the announcer (or whomever wrote the announcer’s introduction) realize how unintentionally funny those words sounded?

@4 Did I hear somewhere that Pastor Ssempra was reported by one his competitor preachers for violating a law against gay porn he himself had campaigned for?

Seriously, when was this clip recorded? Dial-a-porn? He goes to a sex supermarket in NY? Hasn’t he heard of the internet? And the shops were pretty much zoned out of existence by Koch and Giuliani. As far as I can determine they primarily exist only in the unzoned suburbs. And I am reasonably sure that you have to be his age or older to have been influenced as a youth by the singers/bands that he name-dropped.

What? He mentioned Pope St. Gregory the Great and his Gregorian Chanting?!?

    colnago80 @ # 3: Dobson was a member of the Meese commission …

It bears mentioning that Dobson not only served on that commission, he was one of the morally strong members not indicted for major felonies afterward!

@10: “Seriously, when was this clip recorded.” Probably 1986-ish (the year the Meese Commission’s report on pornography was published).

What a hodge-podge that video is! Dobson is presented as condemning a disjointed assortment of unrelated things. Hard-core pornography is “cheek by jowl” (to borrow a phrase*) with Madonna’s “Like a Virgin” — which, as far as I can make out (no pun intended) is the story of a young woman finding true love. Yes, at one point she says she feels good inside. B F D

    * It comes from Debating Sexual Correctness, a book of essays edited by Adele M. Stan, in which Robin Morgan argues that a man is a hero of the porn industry if he’s been interviewed in Playboy. She mentions Jimmy Carter, Andrew Young, Ed Koch and John Lennon. All of them “consented to be interviewed in Playboy, cheek by jowl with the centerfold.”

I can’t remember who it is now, but isn’t one of the anti-gay “researchers” just forced, forced, I will you, to attend the Gay Pride Parade in San Francisco every single year so he can report on the depravity in detail to his flock?

  14. matty1 says

@15 My memory is not that good either but I think it might be Peter LaBarbera, who as I recall has actually been banned from some gay rights events for harassing other attendees.

I only get Playboy for the jowls.

You’re thinking of Peter “The Peter” LaBarbera.

  17. Cal says

@tbp1 – Yes as others have said it is Peter LaBarbera, who apparently was forced to go this year again to the Dore Alley fair in San Francisco to take lots and lots of pics for his blog of the many attendees in their fetish gear.

He is apparently doing a series on his blog somewhere. He always fails to mention that both this event and Folsom are not strictly gay events, but why should the truth matter to him?
