Rafael Cruz: Obama to Take Our Guns Like Mao and Stalin

Rafael Cruz continues his unblemished record of baseless paranoia by going on the Faith and Liberty radio show and declaring that Obama is a “totalitarian” who is going to take everyone’s guns just like Mao and Stalin did before slaughtering tens of millions of people.

Cruz, who regularly preaches Christian Nationalist pseudo-history, said that Obama has a “worldview based upon a totalitarian view of government being all powerful,” and is bent on “destroying the exceptionalism of America” by ratifying the Law of the Seas Treaty.

After host Dave Garrison asked if “President Obama wants to take our guns as part of this worldview,” Cruz responded: “Well, of course, you have got to realize that is all about control. You look at history, Stalin took out the guns, then killed twenty million people; Mao took out the guns, then killed fifty million people. Every society where government has taken the guns away from the population, then they’ve used them against the population.”

And when Obama leaves office in January, 2017 without ever seizing the guns and killing millions of people, then what? It won’t even slow the wingnuts down. A rational person would recognize that they were proven wrong and rethink their premises, but these are not rational people. These are people who are either delusional paranoids or just lying demagogues. In either case, being wrong in all these dystopic predictions will have zero effect on their willingness to keep saying the same things.

A true wing nut will realise this is just a cunning trick by the atheist muslim to make people think he is harmless!

    That’s easy.

It shows the power of prayer and jesus!!!

Really? When, exactly, did Stalin and Mao take away anyone’s guns? I’ve never seen a specific law, order, edict, or date mentioned here.

Every society where government has taken the guns away from the population, then they’ve used them against the population.

When did that happen in the UK? Or would Cruz be down with the USA having the same gun laws as the Brits?

“It didn’t happen because your generous donations allowed us to remain armed and delusional. Don’t stop now ’cause freedom aint free.”

As I understand it the Law of The Seas treaty basically codifies rules regarding what counts as territorial waters that America already accepts and then sets a basis for co-operation in international waters. Now he might be against international co-operation but how can it be a threat to US sovereignty to have a treaty that only applies in places the US government does not claim sovereignty?

Six years in and zero guns taken. He’s the worst “gun rounder-upper” president of all time!

A quick google on “Mao gun control” turned up this site, which appears to be by an actual Maoist or at least a sympathiser. His conclusion is that gun control in China arose after Mao and there is no evidence of any gun restrictions while Mao was in charge. He also claims that in the early days at least Mao’s Communists were actually giving people guns as a way of encouraging them to fight the Japanese and the Nationalists.

Obviously the writer is not neutral and I haven’t investigated his claims but at least we have a counterpoint.

You people seem to think that they would actually make an effort to rationalize their failures, as if self-awareness were even a possibility. Not so. They’ll be too busy substituting the name of the next bête noire into their conspiracy template.

  11. raven says

Most of the people killed by Stalin and Mao, died in famines. They weren’t shot by the state using the guns the state took from the citizens.

The famines were the product of their War on Biology aka Lysenkoism.

    Lysenkoism was anti-evolution, anti-Mendelian, and anti-factual.

As such it has a huge amount in common with Cruz’s fundie xian creationism. It also shows the dangers of basing your policies on beliefs and ideology rather than facts and reality, tens of millions of people dead.

So, Obama’s a ‘totalitarian?’ Don’t these morons realize that the first thing any actual dictator would do is lock them up for their sedition?

America doesn’t do treaties. America leads, you follow. You can go our way or you can go to hell. And also you can’t go our way. Because Exceptionalism.

He’s obviously just putting all the pieces in place so that Clinton can take our guns, ratify treaties, and kill millions of Americans. Wake up, people!

  14. D. C. Sessions says

    When did it happen anywhere?

I’m just trying to keep it simple. Give them “anywhere” and they’ll invent something out of a fantasy about Tito or Stalin. Or for that matter about Jews being unable to own guns in Poland (and never mind that the Poles never allowed Jews to be armed, and that Poland wasn’t the one marching Jews to death camps.)

  15. Loqi says

It’s as if the right wing thinks Stalin and Mao personally killed 70 million people by walking up and executing them, and if only they had guns, they could have defended themselves. Here’s a hint, right wingers: you can’t shoot famine. Though I’m sure you’d try.

Of course you can — and the needle is always dirty, too.

  17. Mike Morris says

Rafael Cruz, among many others, is proof positive that god cannot exist and the babble laws forged in his name are bogus. A liar of that magnitude would surely have been struck by lightning. We could blame god’s notorious bad aim but that meme is getting old and non-existence is way easier to accept.

  18. smrnda says

From what I understand, people who died under Mao died owing to famine from severe mismanagement of government, along with “great leaps forward” with ordinary people attempting to produce steel while farms were left unattended or in the hands of the elderly and kids. Add to the general chaos of the Cultural Revolution.

You know, I’ve read numerous first hand accounts by Red Guards and it seems that none of these Red Guards (who were more or less permitted to do anything they wanted against ‘counter-revolutionaries’ ) appeared to have been armed. I can only imagine the worse death toll if every Red Guard faction had had guns.

  19. busterggi says

What Cruz and his ilk don’t realize is that Obama already took all their guns and replaced them with exact duplicates that contain microchips to spy on them.

Spread it around, it’ll find believers.

  20. garnetstar says

@3 and 10, yeah, I thought that too. I seem to recall that people in Russia and China didn’t *have* a lot of guns to begin with. Most people were very poor, and if you were a farmer that had a shotgun to kill rabbits, that was about it. Soldiers and the aristocracy would have handguns and military or hunting rifles, but not the general population.

Even in rural Italy in my grandparents’ time, the rural population was too poor to have more than shotguns. No one kept automatic pistols under their beds, either.

  21. Moggie says

You’re forgetting Obama’s time machine. Just because he hasn’t yet taken everyone’s guns, that doesn’t mean he hasn’t already done so! In fact, before Obama had even taken office, he had already will have presided over the worst tyrrany the world has ever will have witnessed!

The Communist revolutions were made possible by handing out millions of guns to workers and the peasantry. Stalin and Mao came to power thanks to “armed citizens” who waged deadly civil wars against what they believed were their oppressors (who were likewise well-armed, often by the West). The idea that Stalin or Mao just waltzed into power one day and then took guns away from a previously well-armed but peaceful populace is idiotic.

The wingnut narrative on this gets everything exactly backwards, as usual.

  23. says

It’s also worth noting there were lots of weapons lying around the Soviet Union after WW2, yet no one successfully revolted against Stalin. Apparently German weapons were still being found, some usable, into the 21st Century. A bunch of people having guns isn’t much of a threat if they aren’t organised.
