The Military Thinks Climate Change is Real

It may be an article of faith — literally — for the Christian right that climate change is a gigantic communist hoax, but those Marxists at the Pentagon, who have to have a clear-eyed view of the world, recognize that it’s very real and is going to change the world in important ways. Retired Rear. Admiral David Titley, who is also a PhD meteorologist, had an op-ed in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette last weekend about it.

Climate change is an accelerating threat to national security. That’s the finding of a recent report by the CNA Corporation’s Military Advisory Board, a panel I serve on along with some of our country’s most senior retired military leaders.

Each of us is a hard-nosed leader with decades of experience evaluating national security risks. We have been keeping an eye on climate change for years, first reporting on it as a potential national security threat in 2007.

Since then, we have seen the scientific consensus continue to develop and solidify, while signatures of a warming world — from global temperature trends to severe weather events — strongly suggest that our climate is already changing. And we are increasingly worried about the lack of comprehensive action by the United States and the global community.

The changing climate is already serving as a catalyst for conflict. Consider, for example, the severe drought in the years leading up to the civil war in Syria. The drought didn’t cause the war, but it certainly served as a destabilizing factor.

Struggles for control of food, water and energy supplies escalate tensions between ethnic groups, religious groups and nations. And as we’re seeing in Iraq, ancient tensions can flare up into deadly conflict.

Clearly he’s been bought off by Saul Alinsky and George Soros. He’s probably a Russian spy or something.

I seem to recall the Pentagon doing projections of the consequences of climate change in the 90s, but those may have just been theoretical.

Which is to say, they’ve been aware of the possibilities for a long time.

  2. blf says

I have similar recollections as hunter@1.

And about two(?) years ago, the USAlien Navy sailed an entire fleet around the Hawaiian Islands using biofuels, in a test / demonstration of its capacity to continue to threaten when there is another shortage of oil. In response(?), at least one dumbfeck thug Senator introduced a bill to prohibit the military from burning non-petroleum fuels except when they were cheaper than oil.

  3. freethinkercro says

Of course the military realizes that global climate change is real. The intelligence community realizes that as well. The people in leadership positions are not politicians. They are evaluated on results and to not take scientific results into account when planning for threats and countermeasures would be dereliction of duty.

Coastal flooding has surged along US east coast: Reuters …
www. smh. › Environment › Climate Change

2 days ago – Coastal flooding along the densely populated Eastern Seaboard of the United … has reached flood levels an average of 20 days or more a year in Annapolis, Maryland; … The trend roughly tracks the global rise in sea levels.

We are starting to see some of the results of sea level rise.

Much of the east coast is seeing coastal flooding at high tides. This is made worse because they built too close to the shore and because the shore is sinking in many places.

It runs from NYC, Maryland, Virginia, NC, SC, Florida, Louisiana.

They don’t have too much time to argue over whether the sea level is rising. They are too busy trying to figure out what to do about frequent high tide flood events.

Any problem can be easily fixed by chanting U.S.A. U.S.A. U.S.A.

News for Lake mead at record low levels
Lake Mead sinks to a record low
    Las Vegas Review-Journal ‎- 1 day ago

Lake Mead shrank to its lowest level since the reservoir was being filled for the first time in 1937. The all-time low surpasses the record set in …

Standard disclaimer, No one event can be ascribed to climate change yada, yada, yada.

Things aren’t looking too good a lot of places.

The SW is in a 14 year drought. Lake Mead is at a record low level and Las Vegas is being forced to dig another inlet to get enough water.

California is in a three year drought and water is scarce. Fire season used to be late summer. It started this year in January. It’s going to be a bad one.

Whole forests are dying in the Rockies because of warmer winters and increasing bark beetle numbers.

  7. D. C. Sessions says

The sea level rise is one of the best things that could possibly happen. Just a few more feet and the coastal elitists will be wiped out, which will leave the Real Americans™ in (laugh about this, latte drinkers!) “fly-over country” in charge for good.

  8. D. C. Sessions says

BTW, raven, it’s more like the past 20 years in the Southwest. Been ongoing drought at least since 1994 — it’s just that California and Nevada have been mining water for so long that they’re just now noticing.

Retired Rear. Admiral David Titley, who is also a PhD meteorologist, had an op-ed in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette last weekend about it.

Titley also appears talking about climate change here :

‘US Navy Chief Oceanographer: I Was Formerly a Climate Skeptic’ by Greenman3610 as part of the excellent ‘Climate Denial Crock of the Week’ series.

  10. Phillip IV says

For me this is one of the most blatant contradictions a lot of Republicans indulge in: claiming that absolutely nothing should be done about climate change as long as the science is not 100% settled down to the smallest detail – yet funding the military on a level that reflects a comprehensive set of often rather remote threat scenarios.

If you applied the same stringency those right-wingers demand for the climate issue to defense spending, the logical outcome would be completely abolishing the armed forces because there aren’t currently any enemy tanks massing at the borders.

  11. howardhershey says

And, despite the flooding on the East Coast, NC Republicans banned that state from basing coastal policies on scientific predictions of sea level rise. They must have learned their science from King Canute.

Plus there’s this clip with the military and climate change too :

Climate change is a risk to national security. (Part 2 – part 1 linked on the clip) Again Climate Denial Crock of the Week’ series.

Includes former CIA director, James Woolsey, General Anthony Zinni & a US Army War college Professor.

There’s also some of the things the US military is doing on one other clip in that series – renewable energy solution of the month, I think?

  14. colnago80 says

    Re Howard Hershey @ #13

As I understand it, King Canute was well aware that he couldn’t stop the tide from coming in. His little play was an object lesson for his subjects.

  15. Pierce R. Butler says

Phillip IV @ # 12: … there aren’t currently any enemy tanks massing at the borders.

Yet another liberal moonbat taken in by the Sonora-desert-rocks camouflage of the gay Chi-Com Muslim UN brigades!

  16. D. C. Sessions says

There’s also some of the things the US military is doing on one other clip in that series – renewable energy solution of the month, I think?

This goes to show what happens when Congress doesn’t do its proper job of oversight on the military — they take off on left-wing schemes instead of pursuing their proper role of killing people for fun and profit.

  17. says

Yes, some Republicans ban the government looking in to it. There’s no reason investigating something that isn’t happening, that is happening but we aren’t causing, or that is happening and we are contributing to but there’s nothing we can do about it because economy and anyway China. Now, can we please get back to the important things like the 14th investigation of Benghazi, deporting Central American children, or repealing Obamacare?

  18. colnago80 says

But I’m sure that the blogs resident climate change denier, Sir Lancelot, who seems to have vanished as of late, would opine that the military are wrong and should be listening to his heroes Janet Curry, Roy Spencer, et al.

  19. Michael Heath says

    colnago80 asserts:

The Rethuglican fucktards in Congress passed an amendment to prohibit the military from studying climate change.

According to the linked article, the Republicans in Congress did not pass the afore-mentioned amendment. Instead the Rebublicans in the House passed a House amendment. The linked article doesn’t claim Congress passed this amendment.

  20. colnago80 says

    Re Michael Heath @ #21

Apparently, the Senate hasn’t taken any action as of yet. Probably will be dropped in conference committee.

  21. Nice Ogress says

what blows my mind is that these same wingnuts howling at the top of their lungs that climate change can’t possibly be real will simultaneously cite every individual piece of evidence for it as evidence of God’s Wrath a/or The End Times.

It’s like, “No! I refuse to belive in your well-researched and impeccably-argued hypothesis unless you call it by this imaginary name!

  22. says

Silly Nice Ogress. It’s not because we’re burnin’ up the hydrocarbons and creating allathat greenhouse gases. It’s because we’re making BABY JESUS cry, which really pisses off his DADDYself by fornicatin’, bein’ teh GAY, bein’ poor and bein’ brown. And it’s gotten a lot worse since January, 2009 when oneathem darkish Sons of Ham had the temerity to turn the PotUS Oath of Office into a curse upon us ALL!

  23. sailor1031 says

All you climate alarmists need to know that doG is in charge and when the late JC comes back trailing clouds of glory your worrying about a little bit of weather is going to look pretty silly. No, no I didn’t make this up!!

  24. blf says

sailor1031, You forget: “And Al Gore is fat!”
Very important point, that: Proves, proves, climate alarmists wrong.

  25. Crimson Clupeidae says

Of course, the military also has a zombie survival plan (I read it on the internet, it must be true!), so I don’t know how much weight it will carry with the wingnuts.
