D’Souza: Teaching Accurate History = Hating America

Dinesh D’Souza has another undoubtedly idiotic documentary out and he’s making the rounds of the right wing fever swamps to promote it. In a conversation with One American News Network’s Rick Amato, who started by declaring that “liberals hate America,” D’Souza says that teaching accurate history is teaching young people to hate America.

He complains about teaching that Columbus was a “slaver.” Well, he was. One of the very first things he wrote in his journal upon arriving in the new world was that the natives would make fine slaves, and he shipped many of them back to Europe to be slaves. He also sold girls as young as 9 into sexual slavery. This and much more is all documented and verified. Apparently teaching the truth makes people hate America (even though Columbus had nothing to do with the founding of America, a country that did not exist until centuries after his death and in which he never set foot).

This is one of the main problems with the right wing version of patriotism. For D’Souza, patriotism means ignoring anything bad about the United States, pretending that we’ve never done anything wrong, that we are pure as the driven snow. For people like me, patriotism means acknowledging our sometimes terrible actions and taking steps to make sure that our actions are in line with our stated ideals. It’s mindless nationalism, not patriotism.

Well, we must hate America here in New Mexico, because the schools do not celebrate Columbus Day. I am not sure what it says about him in the history books, though.

Al Franken once said that Conservatives love America the way a five year old loves its mommy. Mommy is perfect and can do no wrong and anyone who says otherwise is a bad person. Liberals love America the way an adult loves their mother, acknowledging her faults and loving her anyway.

I meant to add “cherishing her strengths, acknowledging her faults, and loving her anyway.

When a wingnut friend of mine posted a glowing pre-review of this steaming pile of tripe I replied something about guilty of campaign fraud, fired from his job at a Christian college after an affair.

The reply I got was, “hate the sin, love the sinner.”

So, basically, these right wing idiots can say anything, do anything, however illegal, wrong or immoral and they get a pass. But, liberals want to “destroy America” for vague, unarticulated reasons.

We’ve all gone insane, right? Collectively, the entire nation is certifiable.

What, he’s not in prison yet? There is no justice in America.

Retconning America’s history is not loving it.

Destroying America’s government is not loving it.

Gaslighting America’s public is not loving it.

Conservatives like D’Souza do not love America. They might claim they do, but that’s like an abuser claiming he loves his wife while she stands next to him, crying, with two black eyes and a bloody lip.

This is the West, sir. When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.

It seems that attitude has moved further now…

For D’Souza, patriotism means ignoring anything bad about the United States, pretending that we’ve never done anything wrong, that we are pure as the driven snow.

And it is really quite amazingly circular. If you are patriotic, don’t point out the country’s faults and why should you be patriotic? … because the country doesn’t have any faults.

It can hardly be classified as a surprise that people living in a fantasy world find reality, and those who wish to teach it, offensive.

D’Souza has been estranged from reality for decades now. They don’t even exchange holiday greetings anymore.

    Sentencing on Sept 23.

I’m finishing up an excellent book called “Lies my History Teacher Told Me”, a book D’Souza should read, before he leaves a legacy that will one day be documented in a book entitled “Lies Dinesh D’Soluza told”.

It is an odd attitude for so many fervent Christians to take up. They say that all humans are sinners and that nothing human is perfect. Why should any of our works then be perfect?

They bellow all the time in what sinners individual humans are, but the nations we construct have no taint of sin in their actions?

Well, there’s Obamacare. And the EPA. And the Voting Rights Act. Oh, and don’t forget Social Security. And the minimum wage. And the Sixteenth Amendment. Oh, and the Fifteenth, too. Also the Thirteenth. And … BENGHAZI!!!!!!

  14. dugglebogey says

D’souza is the same as all of those flag waving uber-patriotic “real” Americans.

They LOVE AMERICA “the country.” They just hate Americans.

I guess we hate American here in Canada too, because we don’t celebrate Columbus Day either—or Flag Day, or Presidents’ Day, or Veterans’ Day, or Independence Day, or Memorial Day. Feel the hatred.

When he was at Dartmouth, a popular nickname for Dinesh D’Souza was “Distort D’Newsa.” It’s nice to see he’s still true (if one may use that word) to his principles.

Just for that we, the true America-Loving™ Amuricans won’t celebrate Canada Day. Or Victoria Day. And you can forget about us observing St. Jean Baptiste Day! So there! NYAH!!1!one!

“Just for that we, the true America-Loving™ Amuricans won’t celebrate Canada Day.”

Hah! You Americans…you probably don’t even know the dates of Canoe Day, Tim Horton Day, or Wayne Gretzky Day.

  19. Synfandel says

My wife was visiting the US head office of her company a few years ago when some of the staff sniffed at the Canadian employees getting so many more statutory holidays than the Americans. She explained that in fact they got one fewer holidays than the US staff, because they got only Canadian holidays, not both Canadian and American holidays. One surprised colleague asked, “You mean you don’t have the Fourth of July in Canada?” to which she replied, “Yes, we do have the Fourth of July, but we go to work.”

Ah! But its not “the truth,” at least not according to conservatives. That “revisionist” view of history is nothing but Marxist lies cooked up by multiculturalists to defame Columbus and other European explorers who wanted to bring the light of Christian civilization to the heathen. The truly aggrieved party are the generations of white settlers to following as they tried to carve out a hard yet virtuous living on the frontier who but were mercilessly attacked by ungrateful red savages who knew nothing of property rights or voluntary exchange through the free market!

Throw Dinesh D’Soluza into a fighting pit together with his opposite number among the mormons. Or Catholics. Since the cults do not agree on the proper True (TM) history, this should be like keeping Peter Griffin (Family Guy) together with the giant chicken.

  22. Hoosier X says

Benjamin Franklin was a very smart man but he was absolutely wrong about patriotism.

Patriotism is the FIRST refuge of the scoundrel.
