Bresciani: Global Warming Caused by Sin

Michael Bresciani is back for another round of What’s the Dumbest Thing I Can Think Of Today. In his latest Christian Post column, he acknowledges that the earth is growing warmer but says that’s not because of excessive carbon, it’s because of an excess of sin that proves we’re in the end times.

Yes, the Bible Does Speak to the Subject of Climate Change

All that the bible reveals about climate changed is part of the pre-millennial prophetic message. It does say that earthquakes and violent storms, fires and other natural disasters will occur with greater intensity and frequency as the ‘last days’ approach, but it clearly says these are ‘birth pangs’ for a planet about to meet its creator. It does not attribute any of these portents to global warming or a man-made global carbon footprint – sorry.

After almost a half of a century spent studying and teaching on the prophecies of the second coming of Christ I can say with absolute confidence that this world does not end because of global warming or man-made climate change. It does not play into the prophecies of the last days at all.

The second coming of Christ is not precipitated by the heating up of the planet, but by the burning desire of men to live in unbridled perversion and sin. The world’s last dictator does not spring on an unsuspecting world just going about its business as usual, he comes on the wings of a new intense penchant for everything perverted, liberal and dehumanizing being accepted across the globe.

Homosexuality, abortion, general sexual preoccupation and sleazy self-serving politics and world governance brings the antichrist to his short lived rule over a reprobate and dying world. Global warming will be the least of our worries.

Sorry Mr. Obama, your facts are fallacy and the subject of climate change is also above your pay grade.

Yeah, because instead of listening to scientists about a scientific subject, we should turn to ignorant and virtually braindead preachers like you.

Strange how the Antichrist will be smart enough to take over the world, yet dumb enough to proceed with a plan Biblical prophecy says is doomed to fail. Not to mention that apparently God is going to let him harm untold numbers of human beings because God wants to see prophecy fulfilled, instead of cutting to the chase and using his supposed omnipotence to end the whole mess immediately.

I got in a discussion with someone a few days ago who actually believed (or seemed to, at least) that global warming was caused by God building the Lake of Fire mentioned in Revelations. How in the world does one respond to that?

Who is saying this world will end because of climate change? There will be great disruption … species will go extinct, there could be great human suffering and bad things we can’t imagine yet could happen … but this world will go on, perhaps relieved of the bulk of its most destructive organism.

But why should we expect any better understanding of science from someone who actually spent more than half a lifetime studying something like Revelations, which, at best, was a deliberately cryptic rant against the Roman Empire and, at worst, a report of what it’s like to eat the wrong mushroom or lick the wrong toad?

Gregory, that makes me think of the story that was making the rounds years ago about the Russians who drilled so deep they actually drilled into Hell, and recorded the sounds of the damned with a special heat proof microphone. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Well_to_Hell_hoax

Every time a fetus is aborted or two gays get married, God releases another ton of CO2 into the atmosphere. Because punishing all of us for the sins of a few is the best God could come up with when He invented justice.

Yeah, Mr. Obama, you aren’t big and important enough to tackle something like global warming. You leave that to small-time preachers/wannabe writers who nobody has ever heard of.

What caused the ice ages then?

A decrease in sinfulness back in the paleolithic?

(Most fundies don’t have room in their mythology for ice ages or stone ages.) When your universe was created 3,000 years after the Sumerians invented irrigated agriculture and beer, you just have to toss out massive amounts of reality.

Yeah, because instead of listening to scientists about a scientific subject, we should turn to ignorant and virtually brain dead preachers like you. (Michael Bresciani – ed.)

Thing is That’s what has – if not caused – then certainly unnecessarily vastly worsened the whole problem in the first place.

As we all (well, almost all) now know.

Hmm .. Aren’t most of the fundamentalists beloved mythologies and the world they seek to return us to from the Stone Age?

There is a lot wrong with xianity but one minor problem is, it’s boring and it’s prophets have all the intelligence and imagination of a starfish.

If you going to make up mythology, it’s been done and by far better authors.

The problem isn’t Global Warming, it is Global Cooling. Every winter the Frost Giants try to invade the earth. And every winter, Thor and the Aesir drive them off. In times past, when the Frost Giants were stronger, there were winters called Ice Ages that lasted for tens of millennia and came close to wiping out humanity.

While this isn’t literally true, it is at least an uplifting, interesting story.

There is a scientific explanation for this. CO2 is not the only greenhouse gas; methane is also quite potent. So every time somebody sins (I’m talking real sins, like same-sex kissing or supporting Obamacare, not fake sins, like accidentally executing innocent people), God gets indigestion, and lets off a real stinkeroo of a digestive gas eruption. So God’s farts cause global warming.

    Thus endeth the lesson.

So have you packed and got your travel visa and passport stamped Michael?
Have you given a key to your neighbour to water your indoor plants…turned the gas and lecky off yet?

Jus’ askin’…seems you are going on a shortish journey with a few other buffoons…the ‘rapture express’ is in the station…don’t forget ya platform ticket!…ciao ciao!…don’t bother with the postcard…take ya diapers…we will be busy partying, odds are you will be busy explaining yourself.

How in the world does one respond to that?

Pointing and laughing would work. Rolling your eyes and looking like you desperately want to be elsewhere would work.

Or you could tell them your magic cat Fluffy will take care of the lake of fire. Or that Thor and Brahma will deal with it.

I’ve had to listen to similar gibberish from fundies in RL and chosen the tactful way of saying nothing. One could just say they have no interest in someone else’s primitive superstitions.

    He’s right. I verified it sciencifically. I set up an experiment (“Four Girls, Two Rooms”, published in Girls Girls Girls Science Quarterly [Spring 2014]);

    Hypothesis:
Sin leads to an increase in temperature.

    Experiment:
    1. two women in one room at 20 degress Celcius without sinning [Control Group].
    2. two women in one room at 20 degress Celcius with sinning [Experimental Group]

    Conclusion:
Control Group lead to no measurable change, but Experimental Group was hot.

How in the world does one respond to that?

Smile wanly and slowly back out of the room.

I’ve seen similar proclamations from right wing whackaloons in the last week or so. I think this 1) allows them to acknowledge that the data is, indeed, real, and 2) still avoid doing anything concrete about it, since it’s the gays/atheists/muslims/etc. fault.

It will make it harder for all the non-religious deniers to keep denying, though.

    1) allows them to acknowledge that the data is, indeed, real, and 2) still avoid doing anything concrete about it, …

The rightwing nuts have it covered both ways.

    The Word – F**k It

Scientists warn that catastrophic climate change has become inevitable and irreversible, which means Americans are free to relax and do nothing.
    Comedy Central

Global warming isn’t happening. But it is inevitable now so they can just sit back and do nothing.

Which is more or less what is happening anyway. But we will adapt. Not because we want to but because we will have to.

StevoR : Free West Papua, free Tibet, let the Chagossians return!

@ 18. raven : We? Not sure who “we” is there but a lot of people will die instead /as well as adapt. Mostly those who done least to create the problem.

    Michael Heath

It’s not fair play that Ed points to wingnuts like Michael Bresciani as representative of those who challenge what climate scientists assert. There’s plenty of well-informed skeptics who can point to facts that reveal the climate isn’t as sensitive as the climate science community finds and therefore we don’t need to do anything about it. Oh wait, there are no such facts or well-informed skeptics, only wingnuts that deny reality and oppose doing something to reduce human suffering. So never mind.

I can say with absolute confidence that this world does not end because of global warming or man-made climate change.

I’m inclined to agree with him. Not for the reason stated, but because climate change isn’t likely to cause the “end of the world”. What it will likely cause is a lot of unnecessary suffering.

  22. 22
    raven

I can say with absolute confidence that this world does not end because of global warming or man-made climate change.

Of course the world isn’t going to end because of climate change or anything that humans can do with our present level of technology. Even the Chixulub asteroid strike only put a minor dent in it.

But we might not be living on it.

I can say with absolute confidence that this world does not end because of global warming or man-made climate change.

Is that the same “absolute confidence” that your fellows have in their “God is pissed and going to smite Oklahoma again” predictions, the “absolute confidence” that others of your fellows have in their prediction that the End will be in (fill in the year), the “absolute confidence” that Obama will send out the ATF stormtroopers for peoples’ guns, the “absolute confidence” that still others have proclaimed their prayers have ensured (the end of the Texas drought|Obama’s loss in 2012|etc.) or perhaps some other “absolute confidence?”

  28. 28
    raven

    But we will adapt

What, as in “evolve”?? Perish the thought!!

The ones with money, technology, and luck will adapt.

The third world might well see millions dead in one disaster or another.

It will be expensive. Estimates are for the 21st century, $1/2 trillion USA, $15 trillion world. And for the 22nd century it gets worse.

  29. 29
    Raging Bee

Well, yeah, global warming IS caused by sin — the sin of destroying the environment and biosphere God created, instead of preserving it for the future generations he wants us to keep on creating. It’s about goddam time those “conservative” Christians got off their asses and started working to actually conserve something.

It’s a pity that’s not the sin they’re talking about here. Even when they’re right, they’re still dead wrong.

    “…pre-millennial prophetic message.”

He’s just over a full millennium late for that one. And the End Times™ have been confidently computed & trumpeted better than 200 times already. Bresciani’s late to the party on all counts.

vmanis1 – that cosmic fart would contain approximately (by volume): 78.084% diatomic nitrogen, 20.946% diatomic oxygen and 0.934% argon, with 0.0035% carbon dioxide (methane is about 0.0001745% of the total)*.

Sorry to burst your dihydrogen sulphide bubble.
