Linda Harvey’s Breathtaking Illogic

One of the most ridiculous arguments we hear constantly from the Christian right is this idea that gays and liberals are in cahoots with Muslims to destroy Christianity. Unhinged bigot Linda Harvey praises Muslim cab drivers who refused to drive cabs with ads for the Gay Games in Cleveland while still claiming there’s a Gay-Muslim axis working together against Christianity.

“I don’t know if you’ve heard, but there’s going to be a big gathering of homosexuals in the city of Cleveland in August for what is called the Gay Games,” Harvey said. “Yes I know, it seems that these folks can’t stop proclaiming in public the sinful behavior they’ve told us for years they wanted to keep private.”

“About twenty-five cab drivers who are Muslims are refusing to drive cabs that display the Gay Games promotional signs. And you know what, I totally agree with them, good for them for having the courage to stand up and do this.”…

Moments after saluting this anti-gay move by a group of Muslim taxi drivers, she then alleged that Muslims and gays are working together to bring down Christianity.

“But there’s something else. Could it be that the two groups have a common denominator that transcends the homosexuality issue, and that is they both essentially despise Christians?” she explained. “Sadly, I believe that gets to the heart of what is going on, whether these folks admit it or not.”

Let’s see, we have the Christian and Muslim fundamentalists who agree on virtually everything, especially their hatred of gay people and desire to discriminate against them and punish them. They both rail against atheists and against the downfall of America into rampant immorality. And yet it’s the gay people who are working with the Muslims, right? Seriously, this kind of stupid should be painful.

My question is will the conservative christians who usually support “religious liberty” defend this cab driver for refusing to do his job? A few years back in Iowa a bus driver was fired for refusing to drive her bus which had an American Atheist banner ad on the side. There was some community backlash and she was rehired. Are we going to see the same thing here or does “religious liberty” apply exclusively to christians?

If Cleveland is like anywhere else, cab drivers have to rent their cabs from the company in order to work their shifts. If Muslims are refusing to drive cabs with the Gay Games ads on them, all it means is those Muslims are putting themselves out of work, and handing their work days over to less bigoted drivers. Win!

You mean, like the 2014 Annual Meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention (happening this June in Baltimore; get your tickets, they’re going fast!)? Oh, that’s right, it’s totally fine to proclaims one’s heresy as long as one also claims to be a “Christian” (see Romney, Mitt for further examples). I believe that’s what we call “hypocrisy.”

You find it ridiculous? In Europe, we now have catholic-fundies-friendly far-right parties claiming that gays and social-democrats are in cahoots with Muslims to destroy secularism. It’s not often that Europe manage to outwingnut the US, but for once, we have it worse than you.

“Gay Games”? When did they change the name? It used to be the “Big Gathering of Homosexuals”.

No, gays have been telling you for years that they want to DO in private, free from government interference, what they want do with other consenting adults of their choice. They also want to have the same freedom of speech to say who they ARE as you have when a man goes around introducing a woman as his wife who he loves very much.

Constitutional rights … how the fuck do they work?

A perfect example of a negative externality: her stupidity is painful — to us.

Well, they do disagree on which group government should privilege to the detriment of all others; including secularist Christians and Muslims in their own respective camps.

“Let’s see, we have the Christian and Muslim fundamentalists who agree on virtually everything,”

Yes, but they disagree on which god it is in whose name they act. From my readings of the Bible so far, that is literally the only difference between hero and villain.

somnus, except chrisitans and muslims worship the same god, just under different names.

Ehhh… While technically all the Abrahamic religions worship, well, “the God of Abraham,” I wouldn’t really say that’s particularly meaningful. Each religion (and each sect/denomination within them) has a very meaningfully different conception of that god’s nature.

But she thinks any boycott by liberals is misguided and unpatriotic, amirite?
