Bigots: Day of Silence is ‘Medical Malpractice’

April 11 is the annual Day of Silence, a day when gay students and their allies refuse to speak to call attention to the silencing and bullying of any kid perceived to be gay. Which means this is the annual Month of Freaking the Fuck Out and Lying Their Asses Off for the Christian right. Anti-gay groups are urging parents to keep their kids home from school that day because, apparently, you can be turned gay by the mere fact of finding out there are kids in your school who don’t hate gay kids as much as your parents do.

Mission America’s Linda Harvey and Laurie Higgins of the Illinois Family Institute, an AFA affiliate, discussed the boycott plans on Harvey’s weekend radio show, where Harvey claimed that the Day of Silence actually represents “medical malpractice.”

“This is educational malpractice, it really is, and it really should be medical malpractice,” she said of gay rights advocacy, “especially when you have HIV rates and the other hazards we know that are out there for kids.”

Higgins added that public school educators “censor” anti-gay activists by citing concerns about “safety, or whatever that is,” and said that their curriculum “violates any kind of principles of sound pedagogy.”

Harvey warned that the Day of Silence helps LGBT and allied students feel “empowered in very inappropriate ways,” to intimidate others: “The Day of Silence, the real silencing going on is not the so-called LGBT students, the real silencing going on is conservative and Christian thought.”

“What’s dishonest about this movement is they don’t acknowledge that their end goal is not ending bullying, they’re using that; their end goal is to eradicate conservative moral beliefs or to make it socially, politically impossible to repeat them,” Higgins said. “This is dishonest to say this is just about bullying, this is really and truly about silencing conservatives.”

Are they deluded enough to actually believe this? Or is this just a means of scaring people into sending them money?

This is absolutely medical malpractice! Everyone know April 11 is the only day the entire year that doctors can mention HIV and other hazards. TEH GAYS deliberately chose that day to silence these doctors.

Oh, also, apparently, they now teach advanced medical training in high schools, rather than medical school.

After all this time you actually need to ask?

The whole point of The Day of Silence is to show how LGBTEtc. students are allowed no voice. Participants do not speak; they wear a sticker saying that they are participating, and some may hand out small information flying to people who ask about the sticker.

And the Talibangelicals start screaming and frothing, “Dear Lord, they’re quiet! They’re not speaking up! STOP TRYING TO RECRUIT MY KID WITH YOUR SILENCE!!1!”

It is all about hate. Whether they silent or outspoken, closeted or proud, gay people MUST be exterminated (try saying that without sounding like a Dalek.) Talibangelicals are pathologically afraid of reality and will do anything — ANYTHING to hold it at bay.

Uh…what month isn’t “the annual month of freaking the fuck out and lying their asses off” for the moronic tealibangelicals?

The way to prevent the bulk of new HIV infections is to encourage young black men that if they want to go ‘down low’, do it safely. Oh, and another thing, if being LGBT isn’t a source of shame then the whole ‘down low’ thing vanishes away, homosexuality (or bisexuality) comes out into the open, it becomes easier to encourage safety and responsibility. Keep it a secret then the lifestyle gains a dangerous cache (and a sense of guilt and shame) with young men and, undetected, the virus can spread into the population at large. It goes from being a disease into an epidemic.

… their end goal is to eradicate conservative moral beliefs or to make it socially, politically impossible to repeat them

The religious right has lost the war. Their prejudices are no longer the popular prejudices. Now if they spout their sanctimonious ignorance they don’t get an ‘amen’, they get a ‘WTF?’ They are cowards and know the day has arrived where they no longer lead popular social opinion. It’s like a toddler throwing a tantrum when it finally sinks in that he is not the center of the universe.

what month isn’t “the annual month of freaking the fuck out and lying their asses off” for the moronic tealibangelicals?

Why, any month whose name ends in a Q.

Kids — I repeat, KIDS — being quiet, is medical malpractice and intimidates others? These people aren’t even trying to be coherent anymore.

  9. John Pieret says

their curriculum “violates any kind of principles of sound pedagogy”

‘You’re not teaching them to believe what I believe; to hate who I hate; to be what I am.’

The only reasonable response to which is: thank goodness!

  10. John Pieret says

Who knew that “conservative moral beliefs” were “push kids down, call them ‘fags’”?

Unfortunately, the kids of people that profess “conservative moral beliefs” knew it.

annual Month of Freaking the Fuck Out and Lying Their Asses Off

See if you can spot the similarity between this and “white history month.”

I hadn’t realized that the wingnuts limited the lying and freaking out to a particular month.

  13. dingojack says

    Hunter – they don’t.
It’s just a tad less cumbersome than ‘Religious Right-wing Nut-Jobs Freak the Fuck Out (More Than They’d Usually Do) Over the Most Trivial Nonsense Imaginable and then Lie Like Hell About Stuff Any Idiot With Half a Brain (and Basic Research Tools) Could Debunk in Five Minutes Month’.
    Or RRWNJFFO(MTTUD)OMTNILLHASAIWHB(BRT)CDFMM for short..

I think the Annual Day of Silence shouldn’t be limited to “refus(ing) to speak to call attention to the silencing and bullying of any kid perceived to be gay.” No, if a student feels very strongly on this issue and wants to call particular attention to their condemnation of the silencing and bullying of LGBT kids, they can also send a clear message by boycotting school all together on April 11. More silent than silent, a sacrifice which further encourages the message of the Day of Silence and the social acceptance of gay students: “Just Stay Home.”

Then let’s all watch the Christian Right scramble.

  16. says

Damn. So much for National Poetry Month.

And, Greg, due to a seperate issue (teh gunz) I was drawing a similar comparison …. great minds and such rot. :)

So April is the month in which the RW religious express two of their most notable values:
    1. Rejection of reality, and
    2. Bigotry toward gays
    .
Next month: hypocrisy and bullying children are in the spotlight, so mark your calender, boys and girls!

  18. Synfandel says

…this is really and truly about silencing conservatives.

How can someone choosing to be silent silence someone else?

  19. DaveL says

This is pretty much the same old religious conservative pastime of picking any random word meaning something bad and trying to associate it with gay rights. The thing is, “sin” doesn’t have the cachet it once did. “Pedophilia”, “Nazism”, “Stalinism”, and even “treason” have already been done to death, and that leaves them with things like “medical malpractice.”

If they keep on this way, by this time next year, they’ll be down to “gingivitis”, or maybe “ice dams”.
