‘Psychic’ Fraud Marks Gets 10 Years

Rose Marks, the matriarch of an entirely family of “psychic” con artists, was sentenced to 10 years in prison after being convicted of many counts of fraud for bilking desperate people out of millions and millions of dollars. Insert the obligatory “she should have seen this coming” joke.

Convicted psychic swindler Rose Marks was sentenced to just over 10 years in federal prison Monday for defrauding clients of her family’s fortune-telling businesses out of more than $17.8 million.

Looking frail and downtrodden, Marks, 62, of Fort Lauderdale, sobbed as she apologized to her victims, her family and everyone she hurt, saying her former clients had been some of her best and closest friends.

“At the time, I didn’t realize what I was doing was wrong,” she said, begging the judge for mercy. “Now, I realize that I caused a lot of hurt and disappointment.”

Funny how you only managed to realize that after you were convicted. Apparently your “spirit guides” didn’t bother telling you that.

Victims testified that she convinced them she could swap people’s souls between bodies, prevent a woman from conceiving via in vitro fertilization and even use her psychic powers to prevent the Internal Revenue Service from going after them for taxes.

Deveraux testified that Marks convinced her that Deveraux was secretly having romantic communications — by email — with actor Brad Pitt and former Secretary of State Colin Powell.

Deveraux said Marks also exploited her grief after Deveraux’s 8-year-old son, Sam, died in an ATV accident in October 2005.

Marks tormented her with claims that the child was not in heaven and that Marks could transfer the child’s soul or spirit into the body of another person, reuniting mother and son “to keep him out of the flames,” Deveraux said.

Marks told Deveraux that a virgin, who resembled the late Princess Grace of Monaco, had used a leftover embryo to give birth to a child who was the full-blood brother of Sam, Deveraux said. Marks predicted Deveraux would die, assume the body of this woman, be married to Brad Pitt and reunited with Sam, she said.

The woman turned out to be Cynthia Miller, who is married to one of Marks’ sons and is scheduled for sentencing on a related fraud charge later this month.

Buh bye.

When I first read that headline, I thought someone who was ripped off by some psychic were being jailed (for being stupid in public, perhaps). Reading what Mark’s victims thought she could do, that might not have been a total injustice.

She should have no fear of prison. She will likely run the place. What with her Scanners and Firestarter and Carrie powers and all…

While I’d like to feel sorry for those this family has screwed with, it sure sounds like some of them were amazingly stupid. Souls swapping bodies? A virgin who looked like Princess Grace giving birth to a “left over embryo?” Besides, wouldn’t Angelina have something to say about the upcoming wedding to Brad . . ?

There’s these men that Deveraux can give lots of money to who will communicate on behalf of her son so his soul may be saved and whom she need not fear are conning her because the US Govt says they aren’t hucksters. Many of them wear black with little white collars protruding and carry sticks tied perpendicularly. Their places of business are located all over and are tax exempt, another sign they’re not committing fraud.
What is committed individually is a crime, what is committed upon millions is a statistic.
