Angry Glenn Beck Returns

Glenn Beck vacillates wildly between weepy-eyed but hopeful monologues about how God is on his side and has amazing plans for him to save America and angry, spiteful screeds about how the country is going to hell and he’s done with it (and might even move to Canada). Angry Beck is back this week with this bizarre, incoherent diatribe about how brave he is for not letting “them” (whoever that is) change him. Oh, and he might burn a flag. It’s all quite weird.

They say that if you think you’re crazy, that’s a good sign that you’re not. I have to wonder though; does Glenn Beck perhaps know that he’s batshit insane, but he’s playing it up for cash? Has he been privately diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, but refuses to take meds, because he’s making millions by being publicly crazy? Or is it just an act? Maybe he THINKS he’s just acting, but he really is off his rocker? I just can’t tell, and I’m not willing to watch enough video to try and parse it out.

With Glenn Beck when isn’t it?

  3. StevoR : Free West Papua, free Tibet, let the Chagossians return! says

What? Did I hear right? At the 1 minute 40 secs mark did Beck say something about putting Cheney’s head on Abe? The fuck?

    Might move to Canada?

Given a choice between Becks and Bieber, I think we’d prefer taking the Bieber back. We’ve got enough Beckistanians of our own.

  5. Doc Bill says

The last time I watched a Beck clip was on the Daily show some years ago.

Yes, I think it’s an act but I also think he gets so wrapped up in the act that he becomes unhinged.

What happened to his plan to build a Utopia in Kansas or wherever? Do you think he’s really making millions off his own channel? It should be on diminishing returns by now.

kevinalexander “He can’t move to Canada. We’ve spread diatomaceous earth all along the border.”
Diatomaceous? Oh no! That’s the worst kind of earth!

Doc Bill “Do you think he’s really making millions off his own channel? It should be on diminishing returns by now.”
Why? Scared old white people get SS checks every month, and there are still plenty of the former.

Has he been privately diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, but refuses to take meds, because he’s making millions by being publicly crazy?

If Beck has an actual diagnosable illness I think unmedicated or unsuccessfully medicated bipolar is a better bet. However, I would put my money on Doc Bill’s diagnosis that he gets so wrapped up in the act that he becomes unhinged. Maybe he’s a self-induced adrenaline junkie.

  8. Phillip IV says

he’s done with it (and might even move to Canada)

Perhaps he’s actually serious about it. With that shirt and those glasses, he does already look kinda Canadian, so perhaps he’s trying to acclimatize. He should leave the top-most button open, though.

  9. raven says

Whether Beck is crazy or not is an open question.

But don’t expect whatever he is to get worse. Or better. A lot of these are stable within their categories. And Beck has been around long enough to have a history.

You always expect these types to crash and burn. Sometimes they do, sometimes they are stable.

  10. Larry says

We’ve spread diatomaceous earth all along the border.

It didn’t work against the smoke monster. It won’t work against the Man in Beck.

  11. sigurd jorsalfar says

Why wouldn’t he move to Canada? Gun-control, public health insurance, gays marrying – all the things Mr Beck loves.

  12. raven says

My impression is that Beck has hit his limits.

He has enough of a following to make him a 0.1 billionaire. But it is all lunatic fringers. They are not insignificant but not real important either.

He hasn’t been able to move beyond the lunatic fringe and that has to be frustrating for a megalomaniac wannabe.

  13. dhall says

Out of curiosity, what kind of ratings does he get? Does anyone know? Or Limbaugh, or any of these idiots? Do they honestly have large followings, or do you think it might be the same fairly small group that just bounces from one to the next? I guess I just find it difficult to believe that there are millions and millions of people listening to these guys. Anyone know how to find out what their ratings might be?

  14. dingojack says

Anyone know how to find out what their ratings might be?

You can get some of it from Google.

Glenn Beck’s net worth, accumulated recently is estimated at around $100 million.

Fox News is the number one cable news channel. However, they are dropping rapidly. And the average age of their viewers is 65. If nothing changes, all their viewers will transition from old people to…dead people.

  16. says

Beck is a modern P. T. Barnum merged with Joseph Smith with a dash Father Coglin thrown into the mix. Yeah, it’s an act. That’s why he keeps flipping from weepy-eyed but hopeful and Grandpa Simpson writing letters to the president demanding that he eliminate some of the states. If he stuck with one mode or the other, his audience would get bored and tune out. He’s find a nice niche audience of scared old people who think Fox is too liberal but aren’t crazy enough to listen to Alex Jones rant about juice boxes and chemtrails. It’s been a lucrative market for him so far and he’ll ride it out until they die off, at which time, he’ll graduate to another scam.

  17. dhall says

Thanks for the info, raven. Seems like even true fans would get burned out after awhile too–after all, how long can you remain at such a fever pitch?

Jokes about potential mental illness notwithstanding, is there a period noticed?

Manic depressives often have alternating periods of severe mania and deep depression. They are worst when the cycle rapidly between the two states (so-called “rapid cycling”) and it’s usually a precursor to a full-blown breakdown.

I have no love of Beck, he’s a toxic little worm. But is it possible that yes, he may become the poster child for the tie-in between religious delusion and mental illness?

  21. mikeyb says

Glenn Beck is simply a con man par excellence. He has his niche of persecuted conspiracy driven patriot costume dressing narcissists to thoroughly exploit, just as Deepak Chopra has his new age quantum healing navel gazing narcissists to exploit. Parasites can thrive as long as they have a big enough set of hosts.

  22. mikeyb says

I despise people who make an illegitimate living exploiting peoples beliefs for profit, even if it’s from fools. If there was a hell, they belong in the deepest levels of Dante’s Inferno, as far as I’m concerned.

  25. says

I find it puzzling why so many people believe that Beck is just a conman who doesn’t believe what he’s saying. It’s a charge frequently leveled at Alex Jones too, when I know for a fact that he labored for years in obscurity (here in Austin, TX) on cable access TV (audience 100) before he finally hit the big time with his conspiracy nonsense. Like Jones, Beck is living his alternate reality on some level, he is not just spinning a line for profit.

I can’t pretend to understand the psychology behind it, but I have no doubt that Beck believes much of what he says on a daily basis. I also have no doubt that he embellishes, distorts the truth, and flat out lies all the time too, but if you had the chance to call him out on those lies and distortions, I believe he would tell you, quite honestly, that they were necessary in the service for the “higher purpose” he is striving for (i.e. the end justifies the means).

You don’t get there overnight, but the echo chamber created by financial success and popularity reinforces the conviction that you are on a righteous mission, and that your millions of listeners/followers are depending on you to get the message out. There is also an incentive not to test your claims too rigorously since it increases the odds that you will realize that you’re wrong about everything.

The Glenn Beck of 25 years ago would probably look at the Glenn Beck of today and say “you’re out of your freaking mind if you really believe all this nonsense,” but the older Beck would be able to explain step-by-step how he got there from where the younger Beck was, and it would all make perfect sense to him.

He isn’t looking at his wealth and saying “Thank you, suckers!” He’s looking at it and saying, “I must be doing something right!”

  26. kevinalexander says

I agree and would add— never underestimate the hallucinogenic power of money. That stuff will make you see things that just aren’t there, make you believe shit that couldn’t possibly be true. It can give you the ability to describe in perfect detail the workings of things that make absolutely no sense in the real world.

I remember not too long ago someone (I wish I could remember who) was on both O’Reilly’s and Hannity’s shows and noted that off air encounters made it clear that O’Reilly is not as stupid as he seems on air and Hannity is truly himself. Sure it’s just one observation and proves nothing about these two in particular. But what it does seem to indicate is that there is no way for us to know which is which.

Dan ‘the Shadow’ Robinson – go to the top right-hand corner of the page and hover your mouse over the bit saying ‘Howdy Danrobinson’. A menu should now drop down. The second item down says ‘Edit my Profile’ click on that. I think it’s in there.
I think also that the image has to be rather small, so you might need an image modifying program (such as Photoshop or the like) to resize the image you want to the right size (300 x 400 pixels, I forget now, it’s been awhile).
    Hope that helps*.

I tried that. Went through the whole thing and even tried the Gravatar thing. Didn’t get any error messages and it all seemed to work but still no avatar. I’ve been poking at this for months. Re Dan Robinson @ #30

Several years ago, there was someone who commented on Brayton’s previous incarnation on Scienceblogs who said that he knew Hannity and that he doesn’t believe most of the crap that he spews out while on the air. Similarly, one of Ann Coulter’s former gentlemen friends was quoted as saying that she doesn’t believe 90% of the crap that she says on the air or that comes out of her word processor.

I watched the video soon after Ed posted it, and this one part just tickled my memory:
