TN Pastor Goes Off on Interracial Relationships

Let’s all jump into Professor Peabody’s Wayback Machine and go back to the 1950s to see a Christian minister in Tennessee go on a rant against the evils of interracial relationships, saying they violate God’s will. Except this only happened a few months ago:

The American Jesus blog wants to know if Brother Donny Reagan of the Happy Valley Church of Jesus Christ is the “most racist pastor in America.”

In a video recorded in 2013 and published by the blog on Thursday, Brother Reagan rails against interracial marriage and mixed race children calling the marriage “not right” and wondering why we can’t leave segregation “alone.”

“Today we have so much fussing and stewing about this segregation of white and colored and everything. Why don’t they leave it alone? Let it be the way God made it.”

“There is a move in the message, of blacks marrying whites, whites marrying blacks.” Reagan explains “And folks think that is alright, but you know, my God still has nationalities outside the city.’

To the “amens” of his congregation, Brother Reagan read, “Hybreeding, hybreeding, oh how terrible. They hybreed the people. You know it’s a big molding pot. I’ve got hundreds of precious colored friends that’s borned again Christians. But on this line of segregation, hybreeding the people. What, tell me what fine cultured, fine Christian colored woman would want her baby to be a mulatto by a white man? No sir, it’s not right.”

Reagan also told his congregation that “If God wanted a man brown, black, white, whatever color he wanted him, that God’s creation. That’s the way he wanted it.”

Hybreeding? Molding pot? Wha?

    Hybreeding? Molding pot? Wha?

Well, the 2nd is clearly just a common mistranscription. Obviously the feathers on his pot are falling off.

  2. Phillip IV says

    Hybreeding?

He either means “Hybridization” or “high breeding” – the first refers to the creation of hybrids, the second to procreation under the influence of pot. My guess is he meant the first.

  3. Matt G says

It’s racists like this that allow the less-racist feel they aren’t racist at all. And I’ll bet he doesn’t think he’s racist at all! How does he feel about blacks and Asians? Whites and Hispanics? Americans and Europeans?

  4. John Pieret says

I’ve got hundreds of precious colored friends that’s borned again Christians.

Those are the ones he lets use his bathroom in the basement.

  5. Richard Smith says

    @Matt G (#3):

How does he feel about blacks

He says he’s “got hundreds of precious colored friends that’s borned again Christians,” so clearly he’s got absolutely nothing against them…

    @OP

To the “amens” of his congregation

And there is the real problem right there…these pontificating dumbfucks would be left high and dry if the audience fuckin’ grew up!

  7. David C Brayton says

I went to the YouTube page to see the video. YouTube always posts a bunch on suggested videos on the right. All of the suggested videos were comedy clips–George Lopez, Jeff Dunham, Ricky Gervais.

Apparently YouTube’s algorithm thinks it’s a comedy clip!

  8. sigurd jorsalfar says

What, tell me what fine cultured, fine Christian colored woman would want her baby to be a mulatto by a white man? No sir, it’s not right.”

See? He’s not racist, because he knows that fine, colored, rhetorical christian women agree with him.

  9. gshelley says

No doubt the police will be along to arrest him any minute now, or at least that’s what I would expect from the anti gay arguments, that soon people expressing opinions against SSM will be arrested.

  10. John Pieret says

I was wondering if this was a put on, so I went to the chrch site and checked its “links” page … Landover Baptist Church wasn’t there.

  11. freehand says

When I was hearing this crap from my grandpa preacher 50 years ago it sounded stupid, mean, and old fashioned. I was getting impatient with folks who hadn’t yet figured out the big picture* even as adults, and here this is still being preached by the morally superior Christians. You shall know them by their love.
    .
When one of them tells me that I can’t be moral without God, I tell them that “it’s true, I have a hard time telling whom I should hate without anyone telling me, and if I wrong anybody, I have to try to make it right with them, since I can’t ask Jesus to forgive me. I have to apologize to the one I wronged, and since I can’t always fix things, I just have to struggle with not doing anything wrong in the first place.” They usually leave before I finish.
    .
Grandpa would tell me that colored people were happier when they were slaves. Sigh. I don’t know if their crippled morality or their risible hostility to science and reason was more repulsive. Either would have sufficed to send me fleeing from the church.
    .
    * Morality = how you treat other people.

  12. raven says

    They hybreed the people.

What is wrong with hybridization anyway?

My cat is part Persian and part Siamese.

Our entire agricultural system depends on hybrid corn and wheat.

And oh yeah, I’m a hybrid and part Neanderthal.

  13. Trebuchet says

The American Jesus blog wants to know if Brother Donny Reagan of the Happy Valley Church of Jesus Christ is the “most racist pastor in America.”

    Almost certainly not, unfortunately.

  14. otrame says

Well, I personally think the phrase “hybrid vigor” comes from somewhere. It sure as hell applies to my grandkids, all of whom are part Northern European* and part other, darker-skinned, places in terms of heritage. Not that being mostly of Northern European heritage hasn’t had its down side. When I look back on my family history I keep thinking of that old Danny Kaye routine:

And I am the result of the twisted eugenics of this family in inbred schizophrenics, the end of a long, long line of bats….”

And I think my “hybreed” grandkids are going to be a big improvement.

    * Well, mostly. My great, great, great grandfather was a Comanche.

  15. smrnda says

I was going to comment, is this guy the result of a small, restricted genetic pool that’s led to bad recessive traits that impair mental functioning becoming prominent?

On my YouTube page the third clip from the top was, “Mitt – the Full Documentary”. Heh.

  17. caseloweraz says

I can’t help but wonder if this fellow might be the spiritual descendant of Ervis Carcolo, expansionist leader of Happy Valley in The Dragon Masters, a novella by the late Jack Vance.

  18. ehmm says

    What I learned:

    (Bless him)
He loves him some white people.
He loves him some black people.
He loves him some yellow people.
He loves him some brown people.
He loves him some red people.
He really, really fucking hates mulatto people.

…but he’s not racist. (no sir).

  19. lorn says

Obviously Brother Reagan doesn’t know that race is primarily a social construct, or that the vast majority of people, worldwide, are multiracial, or that multiracial individuals, those with a wider genetic base, are, generally speaking, but not without exception, healthier than those unfortunate individuals with a more narrow genetic heritage.

Or that, odds are, that Brother Reagan himself, his mother, his wife, and his children, are all multiracial at some level. There may be some boring sameness to their skin tone but their genetics are much more diversified and interesting. And that is, as Martha Stewart said, “is a good thing”.

  20. StevoR : Free West Papua, free Tibet, let the Chagossians return! says

@^ ehmm: So the question then has to be why?

Why hate mulatto’s if the other “varieties” (nation / race / people – he seems confused about these here too) are all okay?

    This doesn’t compute.

    @9. sigurd jorsalfar :

“What, tell me what fine cultured, fine Christian colored woman would want her baby to be a mulatto by a white man? No sir, it’s not right.”

See? He’s not racist, because he knows that fine, colored, rhetorical christian women agree with him.

He asserts that without evidence actually. (A few shouts about what Moses would do or something – & I mean SHOUTS! Yeesh this scumbag is hard on the ears.)

Raising the question : Is there in fact any statements by Coloured Christian women outside of perhaps some Black panther rhetoric that agree with this fool?

Also immediately afterwards he yells “God made us the way we are , let’s stay that way!” So, umm, no spectacles, contact lenses, hearing aids, pacemakers and prosethetic limbs for those born limbless due to say thalidomide or whatever then?

Incidentally he shouts about what if I were a black man or red man or yellow man but never goes on to ask himself the next logical question – what if I were a mulatto and would that be any less beautiful somehow than the one’s he says are beautiful?

There’s also a bit about God loving all the varieties of flower and all the sizes of mountains – and says God loves variety – so the implication surely has to be that “mulattos” are loved equally too right? But he doesn’t seem to reach that obvious, logical conclusion of his own rant.

He insists at to volume and venomousness that he ‘ll refuse to marry an interracial couple.

Because John (in revelations I presume) says he saw the nations and “not a bunch of people” and Moses and , uh, he believes and spews a bunch of shit.

Terrible speech and man though in all ways – terrible presentation, terrible lesson, terrible logic, terrible arguments, disgusting lack of ethics and obvious racism, terrible example of humanity – and so shouty and repeditive.

Apparently according to the “Happy Valley Church of JC” webpage – New to HVC’- History page – this dropkick has been “ministering since 1987 to a congregation of 600. I really hope that’s an overestimate and not that many there actually attend and agree. The “pastor” page has this drongo’s bio and confirms that worrying stating they have overseas ministries too – but they also seem a bit of a cult following some “prophet messenger William Branham.” Who?

    @19. Trebuchet :

The American Jesus blog wants to know if Brother Donny Reagan of the Happy Valley Church of Jesus Christ is the “most racist pastor in America.”

    Almost certainly not, unfortunately.

He’d have to be right up there amongst the contenders for that dubious dishonour though surely? Who else is there that’s that blatantly racist? Can’t be that many of them in this century can there?

@23. Michael Heath : Me too – same Mitt doco at the top.

  21. StevoR : Free West Papua, free Tibet, let the Chagossians return! says

    Typo fixes :

hey also seem a bit of a cult following some “prophet messenger William Branham.” Who?

    Wikipedia says this guy :

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Branham

    Or so I presume.

  22. StevoR : Free West Papua, free Tibet, let the Chagossians return! says

BTW Off topic but Edward Snowden is being interviewed on Aussie TV’s SBS Dateline

    right now

    http://www.sbs.com.au/dateline/story/about/id/601800/n/Snowden-Speaks

    Excerpt :

Edward Snowden believes that some US officials would like to see him shot dead or poisoned, but he says he can still sleep easily at night, because he did what he needed to do.

The whistleblower’s thinking is revealed in his first full-length television interview, to be screened in an Australian exclusive on Tuesday’s Dateline.

In a secret location in Moscow, he speaks candidly to Hubert Seipel from German broadcaster NDR about the far-reaching surveillance details he leaked, the treason charges he faces, and his life in exile in Russia.

But with opinions divided over his actions, is Snowden a traitor who needs to be prosecuted or a hero who needs to be protected?

  23. dingojack says

Stevo (#30) – “Because John (in revelations I presume) says he saw the nations and “not a bunch of people” …”
‘Nations’ are specifically mentioned 231 times in the KJV, 19 times in Revelations alone* including:
    “Revelation 7:9
After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;”
So Mr Shouty is a liar or ignorant – or both.
    Dingo
    ——–
    * But not even once in the Gospel of John, so you are correct in your surmise.

  24. StevoR : Free West Papua, free Tibet, let the Chagossians return! says

@ 33. dingojack : Cheers for that info. Yup. I think I’d be going with both for that ignorant or/ & liar one for Mr Shouty too.

  25. says

    @39, again:

I also wonder whether he knows that teh beeeeez are all ladeez and thus are going and rubbing the manparts of the plant and THEN th lady parts, makin’ it a biobotanic 3-way.

  26. Trebuchet says

    @30, SteveoR:

He’d have to be right up there amongst the contenders for that dubious dishonour though surely? Who else is there that’s that blatantly racist? Can’t be that many of them in this century can there?

I suspect there are a great many, especially in the American south. They just don’t have websites where they publish their sermons. And of course, there are all the Obama haters. Nothing to do with race there, oh no.

  27. Synfandel says

“There is a move in the message…”

“…my God still has nationalities outside the city.”

    Double wha?

  28. Stacey C. says

So am I okay because I have an interracial marriage but we’re not going to have kids? Sheesh.
