WND Disproves Its Own Conspiracy Theory

The Worldnetdaily, like many conservatives, is trying really hard to paint the indictment of Dinesh D’Souza as the Obama administration taking out political revenge on him, but in the process of making that claim they manage to prove it wrong.

Cleta Mitchell, a high-profile attorney specializing in campaign finance issues, told WND, “The decision to prosecute – or not prosecute – is always a matter of discretion. It was the prosecutor’s decision – indeed DOJ’s decision – not to prosecute widespread conduit contributions to the John Edwards campaign in 2008. Contrast that with this prosecution, which involved $15,000 (not $20,000 as claimed).”

Asked whether she believes the indictment was politically motivated, Mitchell said, “Do I think this is politically motivated? I think if a Republican appointee had done this, the press corps would be going ballistic. Just consider how outraged they were when Bush asked for and received resignations of all U.S. attorney appointees at the start of his second term, something that is customary. Imagine if his appointee had gone after a George Soros friend. Imagine the outrage.”

Oh yes, imagine the outrage. Now here’s the very next paragraph:

In 2011, prominent Hollywood lawyer Pierce O’Donnell – a Democrat who contributed to John Edwards’ 2004 presidential bid – admitted to asking 10 people, including a relative and employees of his law firm, to each donate $2,000 to Edwards’ run. O’Donnell reimbursed the donors.

O’Donnell was indicted on three felony charges in 2008. In 2011, Politico reported, “The judge struck two of those charges in his ruling and later dismissed one at the request of prosecutors. With only misdemeanors on his record, O’Donnell could regain his law license, which was suspended after the charges were filed.” O’Donnell would serve only 60 days in prison, 500 hours of community service and pay a $20,000 fine…

In 2013, Virginia businessman William Danielczyk was sentenced to two years and four months in prison and fined $50,000 for reimbursing straw donors who contributed $186,600 to Hillary Clinton’s 2006 Senate and 2008 presidential campaign.

Also in 2013, Florida developer Jay Odom, admitted to using straw donors to donate more than $23,000 in illegal donations to former Gov. Mike Huckabee’s 2008 presidential campaign. He was sentenced to six months in federal prison and ordered to pay a $46,000 fine. He pleaded guilty to one felony count of causing a presidential campaign committee to make a false statement to the Federal Election Commission.

Wait, you mean the Obama administration has convicted two people of doing this for Democrats and another for doing it to another Republican? Doesn’t that pretty much destroy the argument that this is a result of political bias? Especially since D’Souza’s lawyer pretty much admits that he did it but said that he doesn’t think he had the intent of breaking the law?

Here’s what is going to happen here. D’Souza is going to cut a deal, he won’t get any jail time and he’ll pay a fine and get probation or a suspended sentence. That’s how these things usually end. And then he’ll go back on the Christian rubber chicken circuit with his terrifying tale of persecution and martyrdom.

I seriously don’t get the “no criminal intent,” excuse. The only possible reason to ask people to donate while promising to reimburse them is if you know that there’s a law limiting your personal contributions and you intend to break it. It simply isn’t reasonable to believe anything else.

Some of the comments…I literally laughing out loud in my office right now.

“How did the administration collect info on D’Siouza? Did they snoop into his email account? What methods are being used to collect information on citizens who criticize Obama?”

I normally don’t go in for conspiracy theories, but This is obviously a political prosecution. I’m waiting for Obama to issue a Fatwah.”

“This greasy administration will dissolve America in civil war before it will ever begin to be rational and civilized. They would see such a conflict as “mission accomplished”.
    America, what have you done?”

“Is there now unquestionable proof that Obamadinajad is the “messiah”?? Can
he perform miracles?? Moses divided the Red Sea, but Obamadinajad has divided the
USA. Take from it what you will. In all of my 77 years, I never thought I’d see the day that my country would be this divided. God help us……….
Modern American leftist culture is built on fictional entertainments. Frauds and phonies thrive. Obama is all things to all people. To the Millenial Generation he’s disenfranchising…he’s a cool hip black guy who digs rap music. To old libs from the civil right’s era he’s historic. He’s Chance the idiot Gardener from ‘Being There’. He’s a blank movie screen. People project their fantasies upon him. If you bust him for what he really is you’re in for an IRS audit or a DoJ indictment. The gulags are starting to fill. Heads up Patriots. “

josephstricklin quoting a comment: He’s Chance the idiot Gardener from ‘Being There’. He’s a blank movie screen. People project their fantasies upon him.

And then the very next sentences: If you bust him for what he really is you’re in for an IRS audit or a DoJ indictment. The gulags are starting to fill. Heads up Patriots.

Even moderately intelligent posts like this one show that these people have no ability to see themselves. They are wrapped in a cocoon of propaganda, and are simultaneously utterly devoid of introspection.

He has continued the Bush administration’s policies of warrantless surveillance, is still bombing brown people in the Near East, has bailed out Wall Street and failed to call out the fossil fuel industry and act with substance on global warming. He is not “going after” their guns. He is doing nearly everything they would want, but they have let the Tribal Elders like Alex Jones, Glen Beck, et al program their minds with paranoid fantasies. The fear, the vitriol, the disdain for evidence, have managed to convince me that humanity has few chances for surviving the real dangers we face – the very real consequences of unsustainable physical processes.

D’Souza is going to cut a deal

Do prosecutors ever have the courage to not make a deal?

Do prosecutors ever have the courage to not make a deal?

Do Judges ever have the courage to say “I know you guys had a deal but guess what? Sentencing is actually my decision not yours” and then pass something other than was agreed in the back room?

I seem to recall that happening (or at least, a suspicion that was about to happen) was exactly why Roman Polanski fled the country, because he wasn’t necessarily going to get the slap on the wrist he had arranged to plea bargain for.
