Virginia Preacher Goes All Taliban

A pastor from Virginia named Paul Washer has gone full Taliban, telling his followers that a woman is committing a sin if she wears clothes that shows the shape of her body at all. So apparently no shorts or tank tops. Gee, might as well put them in a burqa, right?

Itinerant preacher and founder of HeartCry Missionary Society, Paul Washer, says Christian women who wear clothes that outline the shape of their body are “sensual” and “wrong” about how they are exhorted to dress in the Bible.

Preaching from 1 Timothy 2, Washer explained in a YouTube clip Paul’s exhortation to women to dress modestly.

“He says, ‘I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing.’ That tells me that there is clothing that’s improper for a Christian woman. Alright? I mean, that’s just logic. There is clothing that is improper for a Christian woman.”

“My wife has a really good thing that she says: ‘If your clothing is a frame for your face, from which the glory of God is to shine, it’s proper, if it draws attention to your face. If your clothing draws attention to your body, to outline it, to make it noticed, then it’s sensual.’ What you’re doing is wrong,” he warned Christian women…

“Women, you need to understand something. Men are not as dumb as you think they are. My wife and I have a friend in Illinois and she is a very pretty lady, very pretty. And if she walked in that door right now every man in this room, if he turned and saw her, this is what they would say, ‘Well that’s a very pretty lady. That’s a very elegant lady. That’s a beautiful lady.’ And that’s what they would think,” he explained.

“But ladies, there are also women that aren’t half as attractive as that lady I described to you, either in their face or in their body, and they could walk in that door and the moment every man heard the door open and he looked over there, if he was a godly man he would have to go like this (turns head way). Because it’s not beauty. It’s sensuality. And even though you can’t exactly write down the rules and put it all on paper, when you see it, you know it,” said Washer.

That disgusting man is flaunting his (if you’ll excuse the phrase) lower arms. AND he hasn’t buttoned his shirt properly (or put on a tie).

    Talk about motes and beams…..
    He should get stoned!!!!!

Not “show the shape of her body?” Does that mean that we shouldn’t be able to tell if she has legs or arms? Headless maybe? Or only that we can’t tell if she’s pre- or post-pubescent — the width of her hips, any bumps on her chest all thoroughly hidden?

No big deal in an Alberta winter, but could be real interesting for a pregnant woman in a Phoenix August. That’s bad enough with plenty of AC and minimal clothing, but when she has to walk a couple of miles in 45C (of course, women should not be allowed to drive) it could get pretty ugly.

‘If your clothing is a frame for your face, from which the glory of God is to shine, it’s proper,

Classic repressive misogyny. There’s the one bit of the woman from which the glory of God shines, and then there are all the nasty, dirty bits. And it’s all your fault when the men swivel to look at you intead of keeping their minds on the conversation..

Hey reverend, if you want to frame the glory of God, shouldn’t we go naked? According to your own Genesis account, all the bits are his creation.

What is the probability that this guy eventually gets arrested for rape or some other sexual assault or at least having affairs with his followers.. This guy just screams “PERVERT”.

He’s a criminal waiting to happen.

There is an unhealthy and demented preoccupation with women, women’s shapes, and especially if they are attractive.

“My wife has a really good thing that she says: ”

Whoa whoa whoa! He’s letting his woman express her opinion? And he calls himself a Christian!

To me that quote says “don’t show off how well you can afford to dress” not “hide your body”. Not that I endorse either given I think there are very few circumstance where it is ok to tell other people how to dress but this could be another case of some Christians ignoring the fairly radical egalitarian stuff you can find in bits of the new testament.

How does he know that his wife’s friend from Illinois has a great body? Does she wear sinful clothing in his presence? Or does he just see it when they are all together at the Saturday night swinger’s parties?

For people who are so adamant about heterosexuality its amazing the length they go to in order to deny there are two (at least) sexes.

  9. eric says

I wonder what he’d say about us nudist ladies.

Nothing nice. Because, women, you need to understand something. He is as dumb as you think he is.

What’s that slut doing outside the house by herself without a man of the family by her?

    I see an obvious loophole…

  12. says

Paul wasn’t talking about coverage, but about modesty in the sense of not showing off with expensive fabrics, jewelry, and so on. He was opposing pretense, the use of clothing to put forth a false image of who/what you really are.

In modern times, Paul would oppose padded shoulders, paunch-concealing suits, tupees, uplift bras, spandex body shaping, high heels, etc.

But all clothing conceals the real person to some extent.

It follows that nudity is the only true modesty.

No, they are as dumb as I think they are. And I think they are gibbering morons who are barely one step up from a Tex Avery character when they see a pretty woman.

If this guy ever went to a beach, or a water park his mind would explode.

  14. garnetstar says

Because men are actually raving beasts who can’t control the dirty, base impulses of their nature. If they see the outline of a woman’s body, they all, without exception, give in to lust and the sinful actions that arise from that. Only women are able to control themselves.

Thanks a lot, for that insult to all men.

  15. eric says

@18 – I’m sure pastor Paul would explain to you that it’s Eve’s fault that men have those dirty base impulses and can’t control them. So really, those sinful women brought it on themselves.

  16. grumpyoldfart says

Sounds like one of the congregation is flirting with him from the front pew and he’s trying to resist temptation by telling her to cover-up.

  17. peterh says

What’cher wanna bet Washer doesn’t realize his “telling quotation” is from a forged letter masquerading as being from Paul’s hand. As if the genuine Pauline writings aren’t misogynistic enough.

  18. frog says

    grumpyoldfart@20:

Or he thinks she’s flirting with him, because she has the temerity to sit in the front pew while female. There’s a reason the women are shoved to the back in some faiths!

Look, apostate, if YHAllaWH wants them and their babeez to be a burnt offering, who the hell are you to question HIS divine wisdom?

    @4:

More likely, he’s a criminal waiting to get caught.

    @18:

Well, this brings to mind something I said elsewhere. It had to do with the CCW holders wanting to be able to take their penis substitutes everywhere, including church and the courthouse.

“They actually have a tendency to claim that we lack the courage to carry a weapon. Sort of falls into the same category of fail as:

“Wimmen deserve to be raped if they look teh hawt.”.

    “Poverty is a choice.”

“Slavery was only bad for the uppity ones.”

logic is not part of their tool kit.”

I wouldn’t go so far as to suggest that religion CAUSES cognitive dissonance and various forms of mental illness, but it does happily co-exist with many of them.

    @20:

Oh, great! Now you have me writing a screenplay in my head. It’s an amalgam of the best bits from “Taxi Driver” .”Footloose” and “Basic Instinct”. I’m sure that you can build on that.
