1.8 Million Militia Members to ‘Definitely’ Show Up

For the May 16 “Operation American Spring” protest we’ve heard estimates of 30 million, 20 million and 10 million. Now a spokesperson says that there are “1.8 million definite militia members” who are going to show up to remove President Obama from office. I’m sure he’s quaking in his boots.

“We have 1.8 million definite militia members coming,” promises Operation American Spring spokeswoman Karen Smith. (The Anti-Defamation League pegs the number of American militia members at about 20,000.) “Other than that, we’re not keeping a list of concerned people or whatever because how are we gonna do that?”

According to Riley’s introductory note, which he posted on Facebook, about 1 million activists will stick around DC after the march in a nonviolent attempt to shut the city down. According to the the document, the real work will occur after the transfer of power: “Those with the principles of a West, Cruz, Lee, DeMint, Paul, Gov Walker, Sessions, Gowdy, Jordan, Issa, will comprise a tribunal and assume positions of authority to convene investigations, recommend appropriate charges against politicians and government employees to the new U.S. Attorney General appointed by the new President.”

And a little history of such events:

This is hardly the first far-fetched effort from the far right to replace Obama through peaceful demonstrations. In 2010, Kate Vandemoer, a birther activist, announced the Usurpathon, a “Rolling ‘Velvet Revolution’ to Remove the Usurper, et al,” from office. The plan was to bring 10,000 protestors to the Mall, Congress, and the White House to lay siege to the administration. Two people showed up.

In October, the “Truckers Ride for the Constitution” rally, led by a hodgepodge of conservative truck drivers, was held outside Washington, with the aim of arresting House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Sen. Diane Feinstein (D-Calif.). Organizers expected thousands of people to attend. Thirty truckers showed up, led by a woman who believes that Obama and Osama bin Laden are the same person. (“They have same height, bone structure, hands and ears both are left handed,” she noted in a YouTube comment). Two days later, somewhere between a few hundred and a thousand demonstrators convened on downtown Washington for the “Million Vets March.”

And that doesn’t even count Larry Klayman’s rally, which was supposed to draw millions and ended up with nearly as many people on stage speaking as in the audience.

Not sure I recognize all those names. Curt Gowdy I know, but I thought he was dead. (And some say Paul is dead, but I never believed that. Unless they mean the guy who wrote all those Epistles.) And who’s Lee? Robert E. Lee?Harper Lee? Lee Chang-dong? Bill “Spaceman” Lee? And Michael Jordan’s principles nowadays seem to concern the virtues of Hanes underwear more than anything else.

Zackly, 6′-!” (Obama) is the SAME as 6′-4″ (Osama). But, wait, they’re both MOOOOOOOOOOOOOSLIMS!

Is that 1.8 million militia members a definitely going, or 1.8 people are definite that they are militia members and might show up if they happen to be in the are anyway?

You can tell how many people they really expect to turn up by how many porta johns they rent. The standard is 1 for every 300 attendees, so if they are serious about these numbers (which are roughly equivalant to the 1.5-2.0 million at the 2008 inaguration) then they need to lay in 5000-6000 just for the militia members.

In all likelyhood, though, the organizers aren’t going to rent any. Let’s assume that they are within an order of magnitude of the number that actually show Most restaurants and stores within several blocks of the Mall reserve their restrooms for paying customers, so I forsee lines hundreds of people long to get into the museums just to use their facilities. Who knows, they might actually learn something while waiting their turn

I’m sure I’m missing something obvious here, but I’ll parade my ignorance. Someone please tell me what’s in front of my nose.

When I was in the Canadian militia, participating in a protest that called for the violent overthrowing of the government would have been a court martial offense. Prison time followed by a dishonourable discharge would have been the almost-certain results. Is this not the case in the US military? Are these soldiers not worried?

A militia you say? Great! We can finally use the Constitution and regulate them.

IOW – “Evite…how the f*** does that work?”

An excellent point, and one I wish some interviewers or mainstream journalists would point out because it shows that what’s going on here is basically fraud; these are not sincere people with a fringe idea, they’re con artists using a fake rally to drum up web hits or money or something.

@ 6, Thank You, my brain completely shut down, and I couldn’t go on beyond that phrase….

West, Cruz, Lee, DeMint, Paul, Gov Walker, Sessions, Gowdy, Jordan, Issa – if they had principles they wouldn’t be Republicans.

@Synfandel #10 – South of the border, state-managed citizen-solders are known as the National Guard. “Militia” has been in use for several decades to describe survivalists, gun nuts, neo-Nazis and other extremists who believe that either the government is not doing enough to protect citizens from an ill-defined, hard-to-find perceived threat, or that the government IS the threat.

In recent years, a number of “militias” have organized to serve as the armed military of Tea Party groups, often with the intent of “wresting America away from the despots” who sit in the White House, Congress, IRS, whatever. They should not be confused with military personnel.

  11. Trebuchet says

@10: I’m not sure if you’re serious, but just in case:
The Canadian militia you’re referring to is the equivalent of our National Guard, an official government organisation. The “militias” referred to in the post are loose collections of right wing gun nuts in cammo, who hate the US government. And black people. And Mexicans. And Mooslims. And….you get the idea.

Ug and Home Lee are showing up. Between them they count as 1.8 people.

Wish I could be there with my camera to capture pictures of all of them. What would it take ….. 1 or 2 rolls of instamatic film?

Can’t wait for the news coverage.

@Gregory in Seattle #17 – Thank you, Gregory. That makes more sense. I had a cultural disconnect. So these are civilian man-boys playing Red Dawn in army surplus fatigues. Check.

@Trebuchet #18 – I was serious. Seriously ignorant, apparently. Thank you for the explanation.

Well, maybe not. Considering the SKKKrotalMurKKKanPatriotiKKK Front’s demographics, let me just say, “Depends”.

I wonder if these people don’t understand how a Constitutional Republic works or if they just think that their opinions and votes are the only ones that should be counted.

I’d have loved to have seen the “Truckers Rally for the Constitution.” It sounds like the result if Ed Wood had directed the Kris Kristofferson movie “Convoy.”

Apropos of nothing better going on in my head at the moment. Michael Heath’s comment got me to thinking about Stan Lee and his super-duper (and deeply flawed) heroes. It’s been a while since he had a real “new” idea about such characters*.

I’m just spitballin’ here, but howzabout, “UnGODly Man? I can see a guy, dressed head to toe in black with a giant, red U on the bib of his unitard and, in the “U”, the symbol for infinity in a red circle with a line through it.

He could talk like Ahnold and say things like, “Carpe Diem, Baby” or, “I won’t be back!”

Oh, you think THAT’S ridiculous but you can accept a guy whose arms contain titaniumadamantine claws? Yeah, I got an elf in my hand here, he wants to shake your hand. Okay? Great. Oh, sorry, he’s twice as tall as that, but he’s smiling.

    * I got an, “atta boy!”, from Sister Gregoria in Senior English, because I knew so much about the Norse pantheon–where I knew Jackshit about the rest of the gods (including the OTGofRCC,ISaES**)–and she asked me how that was, given my lack of serious scholarship. I told her that I read a LOT of Thor comics. She actually accepted that I was capable of learning and our relationship became something akin to one of mutual respect.

Just tying in with arakasi at #9, I just checked with my fav hotel site and there are still rooms for the May 16 weekend available within a 23 mile radius of DC. What’s keeping the Brave 1.8Mil from reserving rooms especially if they ARE definitely attending?
