Texas BOE Candidate Wants ‘Straight Pride’

Lady Theresa Thombs, the candidate for the Texas Board of Education who seems to be distinguishing herself even among the far right candidates for that board full of wingnuts, posted on her Facebook about the importance of asserting “straight pride” to stop “political correctness.”

Thombs1

Oh for crying out loud. Who, precisely, is ashamed of being straight? And who thinks they should be? No one, of course. I’m straight and I’m not the least bit ashamed of it and can’t imagine why anyone possibly could be. But being unashamed of it is not the same thing as being proud of it. And as soon as straight people start being thrown out of their families, fired from their jobs, bullied in schools, denied equal rights and dehumanized just for being straight, then — and only then — will it make any sense to concern oneself with asserting “straight pride.” This is just another tool to beat gay people with and to claim persecution where there is none.

  1. John Pieret says

“Straight Pride” = “I get to discriminate against anyone else.”

“Gay Pride” = “I get to live my life in peace and safety with all the rights of other people.”

    Yeah, they’re identical.

  2. dingojack says

“And as soon as straight people start being thrown out of their families, fired from their jobs, bullied in schools, denied equal rights and dehumanized just for being straight,…”

Not to mention jailed, lynched or simply kicked to death on a city street…

    :( Dingo

  3. Trebuchet says

Just curious: How come Christopher Monckton, a genuine though loony peer, always gets scare quotes around “lord” but Theresa Thombs, who is loony but not a peer, doesn’t get them around “lady”?

  4. Doc Bill says

Thombs is a full-bore nutjob. In addition to making personal attacks on the other two candidates she said the following according to a Texas news report:

Thombs had said she wanted history lessons written by “experts, not people from some socialist higher education.”

She went on: “We know we didn’t come from monkeys!”

  5. John Hinkle says

I’m me. And I’m not ashamed of me. In fact, I have me pride by virtue of being me.

    Hey, where’d everybody go?

  6. Jeremy Shaffer says

And as soon as straight people start being thrown out of their families, fired from their jobs, bullied in schools, denied equal rights and dehumanized just for being straight, then — and only then — will it make any sense to concern oneself with asserting “straight pride.”

As a testament to their irrationality, many like this Thombs person do believe this is happening to heterosexual people.

  7. says

Jeremy Shaffer “As a testament to their irrationality, many like this Thombs person do believe this is happening to heterosexual people.”
ITS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW! I GOT FIRED FROM MY JOB SIMPLY FOR BEING A STRAIGHT HETEROSEXUAL! AND ALSO I STOLE A FORKLIFT.

  8. psweet says

One reason for Lord Monckton’s quotes is that although he’s a peer, he is not a member of the House of Lords, even though he has claimed otherwise. They actually had to ask him to stop doing so at one point.

  9. says

We can all dream of a day when straights are so accepted in our society that they can finally get elected president.

Cue gratuitous remark about James Buchanan.

  10. dingojack says

As I’ve mentioned before ‘Lady’ is not a title of peerage merely a courtesy title (in the right of her ‘husband’), in her case it is from an organisation that is only recognised by itself*, so if your feel that ignoring such a ‘title’ is justified – go ahead, everyone does…
    Dingo

    * She claims to have been ‘knighted’ which would make her a ‘dame’ not ‘lady’, but apparently she’s too dumb to know the difference

  11. says

She claims to have been ‘knighted’

Why do such super-patriots dishonor the heritage of the American Revolution, which defeated kingship and resulted in the establishment of (as they never tire of telling us) a republic? These bastards are all monarchists at heart and fancy themselves privileged lords and ladies at court. Democrats and others are, of course, the peasants.

    Re: dingojack @ #15…

Cue a chorus of “There ain’t nothing like a dame” from _South Pacific_.

  13. Moggie says

If you really must celebrate “straight pride”, can’t you come up with a better sign? That one looks like it belongs on a unisex toilet.

  14. illdoittomorrow says

“Funny thing… I’ve seen others post this and they are attacked viciously. Apparently it is now intolerant and bigoted to be straight and proud* in this upside down, politically correct society we live in. I invite everyone who is straight and unashamed to post this on your wall.”

The efficiency with which the writer of this drivel fails is amazing. They’ve taken the words funny, attacked, viciously, intolerant, bigoted, proud, and unashamed and either stripped them of all meaning or inverted their meaning.

    * Is that anything like white and proud? I suppose being white is a sort of perverse accomplishment, when you can use your whiteness and privilege against everyone around you.

  15. alanb says

Straight pride is pretty silly, but I’m starting a right-handed pride movement that is really important. Send me money.

  16. No One says

    Straight? Really? Doesn’t that mean like…”square” man? Ya know… toothpaste… restricted airspace…. “beat-less”… not with it… never been experienced… borrrrrrrring…

Be I hetero, yes. Straight? NEVER!

  17. Chiroptera says

Does Thombs have a flag to wave at her straight pride marches? If not, maybe the Southern Pride folks will lend her their Confederate flags!

  18. coffeehound says

“These same people believe Christians should not seek public office and we are ignorant for standing up for what we believe in”

Well, yes to the second, and no to the first….unless what you believe in is crapping on the rights of people who don’t believe like you, then yes.

  19. says

It amazes me that people think “standing up for what they believe in” is such a virtue that it overrides the fact that what they believe in may be a load of ignorant nonsense.

  20. says

one funny (or sad) thing is people like this really aren’t all that favor in straight pride when you consider how much shame they cast on sexuality in general. no sex education! no sex until marriage! sex is dirty! sex is a sin! sex is something to be ashamed of! how can these people claim straight pride when they feel so ashamed of their heterosexual desires???

  21. says

Dr X “I propose a popular rich kids’ free lunch program to boost their sense of personal entitlement.”
Okay. As long as it doesn’t conflict with the school trip to Aspen.

  22. lancifer says

Having contact with many family members that are Christians and Republicans I have heard repeatedly that the “gay agenda” is being “shoved down there throats”.

Putting aside the disturbingly sexual overtones of this phrase, I think they are angered that GBLT activists have garnered so much media attention and have had such a profound effect on public opinion (and just as importantly in the courts) for providing equality under the law for people that they see as “sinners”, “degenerates” and “weirdos”.

I have heard things like, “If they would just keep it to themselves then everything would be just fine. I have nothing against queers/homos.”

Of course this is disingenuous. They want to return to a time when GBLT people had to hide in the shadows for fear of open hostility or worse.

Luckily society (at least western society) is abandoning this prejudice at a rate that is the real source of the frustration and paranoia of these bigots.

  23. says

Okay. As long as it doesn’t conflict with the school trip to Aspen.

There would be no conflict under my plan. The free lunch caterers would be flown to Aspen so that the popular rich kids could get their free lunches served at the lodge. Naturally, since the caterers would be staying in Aspen, they would also serve après-ski kiddie cocktails and dinner before the band performs.

  24. says

“Of course this is disingenuous. They want to return to a time when GBLT people had to hide in the shadows for fear of open hostility or worse.”

That’s true for some. Some of them also would like to make sure that they still have a punching bag now them uppity women and blacks have got themselves some equality.

  25. Doc Bill says

Rationality does not have a seat at the Texas table.

Candidate for governor, Wendy Davis, worked her way from a single mother living in a trailer park to community college to Harvard Law School, Fort Worth city councilwoman to Texas state senator.

Great personal success story, you say? You rational fool!

Not so fast! She’s an uppity woman! Doesn’t know her place! She left the trailer park behind and is now a liberal elite. (I know, go figure that one.) These are comments made by WOMEN opposed to Davis.

It doesn’t make sense, but neither does Theresa Thombs.

  26. says

    dingojack (#36) –

If ‘gay pride’ has the rainbow flag, perhaps straight pride could have this

The Yin/Yang symbol would be more appropriate – six of one nine of the other. O_-

Moggie: If you really must celebrate “straight pride”, can’t you come up with a better sign? That one looks like it belongs on a unisex toilet.

    I had the same thought.

Paging Phyllis Schlafly! Phyllis Schlafly to the red outrage phone please!

  28. says

I perused the web site for the organization that “knighted” her. For a supposed humanitarian organization, there’s a complete lack of detail about their activities. They are “working with other aid organizations in Vienna,” without naming those organizations. Very suspicious to me. On their home page the “Copyright” “Data Protection” “Authenticity” “Privacy Statement” and “Technical Notes” are all dead links. Only “Tell a Friend” “Become a Member” and “Contact Us” are live.

I was amused by the “verification of legitimation” page. I guess that they’re so popular that they have a bad imposter problem. Either that or they’re trying to make themselves feel important.

Also amusing: “The grand title of ‘Sir’ conferred by the Chivalric Order of the Knights of Justice can be registered in England.” Note any lack of with what organization that title is registered. Somehow I don’t think that it’s registered with the College of Arms, where real titles are recorded.

The whole thing feels like a scam. I suspect that her title is merely the result of paying some money, just like a diploma mill, or buying an entry in one of the “Who’s Who in Taxidermy” scams that were popular a while back. Frankly, I have more respect for someone who got their title via the Society for Creative Anachronism; those are earned, not bought.

  29. Moggie says

Kimpatsu, that guy has now been sacked. I suppose that’s one difference between the US and the UK: over here, even a party with a reputation for being full of swivel-eyed loons (UKIP) knows that “floods were God’s punishment for teh ghey” is not a view they want to be associated with.

  30. jimnorth says

Perhaps if she made a mash-up of her title, be it “dame” or “lady”, she could become “lame”.

  31. Silent Service says

My cousin wears his “Straight Pride” shirt to every family gathering out of fear that people might think he actually likes gay people.

  32. dingojack says

    My dear ArtK –
You have been nominated, by a select committee, to be offered a Knight Companionship of the Grand Order of Swivel-Eyed Loons (entitling you to the title ‘Sir ArtK KCGOSEL). In order to confirm your knighthood please email all your personal details (including your full name, address(es), telephone number(s), Email addess(es) and complete financial details), to the financial organisation we are working with in Geneva (but for security we are not authorised to tell who they are, so there!).
Thank you and may the Farce be with you!

  33. Thumper: Token Breeder says

Why is she “Lady”? She’s American, right? You guys don’t have a peer system. And indeed having one would be directly counter to the spirit of the US Revolution, would it not? I assume that she has no rights to the title, I’m just wondering what her justification is.
