Marcotte: S.E. Cupp the ‘Dumbest Pundit Working’

I’ve made no secret of my total disdain for S.E. Cupp and her ignorant and irrational bleatings. Amanda Marcotte seems to share my loathing, declaring her to be the “dumbest pundit working.” That’s an easy case to make when Cupp says that Chris Christie can resign as governor and it would actually help his presidential campaign:

CNN host S.E. Cupp offered advice to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Wednesday in the wake of increasingly damning allegations related to the lane closures on the George Washington Bridge: quit now and live to run for president another day.

“I’ll tell you what will happen: his supporters, both in New Jersey and across the nation will come out,” Cupp argued to colleague Jake Tapper. “He will be a martyr and a hero, and over the next two years, he’ll quietly go about plotting a presidential campaign.”…

“We’ve talked about the way to go about this,” Cupp explained. “If you know it’s gonna come out, get ahead of it. Now he’s saying he wasn’t involved. I hope that’s true.”

But if Christie — a presumptive favorite to seek the 2016 GOP presidential nomination — was aware, Cupp said, resigning would allow the issue to “be done” by the time it was time to start that campaign.

“He’ll say, ‘What do you want from me? I resigned. I did what’s best for New Jersey. I made a mistake, I took responsibility for it, and now I want to be your president,’” Cupp argued.

I’d say there’s a reason why Cupp is not advising political candidates on strategy. Amanda twists the knife:

I think we have a winner in the Dumbest Pundit Alive Olympics. At least until Ross Douthat starts thinking about vaginas again.

Ouch. That’s gonna leave a mark.

Well, that strategy kind of worked for Sarah Palin. She made lots of money from quiting, at least.

I don’t know. There’s a lot of pretty dumb pundits out there, and this seems like garden-variety stupidity, rather than the weapons-grade stuff you’d need to clearly win the title.

Well, Mr. Douthat’s column today is about misogyny on the web, where he frames his anecdotal presentation in a manner that infers the degree of misogyny on the left is just as problematic as it is on the right. And then he argues we need to stop practicing such while he remains a devout Catholic; another irony meter broken.

In the pre-Fox News days I always wondered if the mainstream TV news outlets had Jerry Falwell on as a guest so frequently in order to create a strawman representation of conservative Christians. At that time I lacked the data to realize that, “yes Virginia, Mr. Falwell is representative of the group he influenced.”

Falwell’s popularity on the news shows is something I’m continually reminded of when people reference S.C. Cupp being on TV. I now realize that Falwell was representative of the group, but Cupp certainly is not. Instead I think Cupp serves the same role that Alan Keyes and Clarence Thomas do. And that is to give cover to the fact Christians are hateful and bigoted towards atheists, where they use Cupp’s antipathy towards atheists, liberal democracy, and secularism as justification they’re merely critical of atheist arguments rather than bigots.

I agree with cottonzero @3. Cupp’s “advice” to Christie is just plain, ordinary, MK I Mod 0 stupidity. She doesn’t hold a candle to really stupid pundits like David Limbaugh and Bryan Fischer.

S.E. Cupp is a narcissistic sociopath who has found a shtick that provides her with a substantial life style with little or no real intellectual work. She knows her audience and has adopted a persona that appeals to their basest desires. The rubes have shown that intellectual consistency and facts are unimportant.

It ain’t rocket surgery, but it’s certainly intellectually and ethically lacking.

I think I understand her pot argument: Pot must remain illegal, so the librul nanny-staters can’t make it illegal in the future.

That not only describes SE Cupp really well, but many other pundits like Ann Coulter and Amanda Marcotte.

Maybe Ms Cupp is sharing her bottle of stupid pills with George Will and Peggy Noonan lately

S.E. Cupp is not the most stupid pundit. She’s a moron, for sure. But the competition is intense for the most stupid. And the only reason she is a pundit at all is because she’s attractive (in the physical sense, not an intellectual sense). And not as obviously as mentally deranged as Ann Coulter. Nor as poorly spoken as Sara Palin. But what comes out of her mouth is not worth listening to. Just change the channel.
