Chaz Stevens, Please STFU

I agree completely with Hemant in his criticism of Chaz Stevens, the Florida atheist who got that Festivus pole made of beer bans put up next to a nativity scene at the state capitol and other places. Not for the Festivus poles but for an unhinged and moronic rant he videotaped himself giving in front of another nativity scene and put on Youtube. He then made that video private, but here’s Hemant’s transcript:

Just crazy… the baby fucking jesus. Oh, and an angel! How fucking clever is that? A goddamn fucking angel. Jesus H. Christ. Oh, Jesus Christ, look… someone stuck their finger up the little baby’s ass. Look at this. How [Mary] convinced [Joseph] that “I’m a virgin,” ha!… Jesus Christ. People don’t fucking learn. Told ya’ I was gonna sue. Stupid. [Spits.] Shit. Oh, and there’s our little deer. Why don’t we do something about this deer? Looks like he’s got fucking herpes. And there it is. Baby Jesus Motel 6. Brought to you by the stupid people at Deerfield Beach.

What are you, 12 years old? I’m not the least bit opposed to being profane; I’m often quite profane myself. But this is just juvenile and stupid. And his behavior when criticized reveals much about his “character.”

chazstevens

He left a comment at Hemant’s blog saying, “I don’t care two shits about what others think of me.” And then he made the Youtube clip private. Strike a pose, there’s nothing to it. This is exactly the kind of asshole behavior we do not need.

From asshole Stevens’ response, it appears that he is also a misogamist.

Meh, he sounds like Howard Stern in his younger days… asshole – check, misogynist – check, juvenile – check…

At least Jessica can rest easy that he does not represent her. I find it hilarious when people’s first reaction is to say that when they encounter an asshole… I run into it every time we gays have a pride parade and some insecure asshole needs to explain to all the heterosexuals that not all gays are like the ones dancing in their speedos in the parade with their feather boa.

First of all, I am not one of anything. Amazing for a “free thinkers blog”, unique thinking is in short supply.

True one of us? I almost vomited … do you realize how bizarre and shallow that sounds?

Now, maybe if you did some research on this matter, dug beneath the video I made, you’d get an appreciation (more thinking required) of the issue.

    I’m not confident…

It is not about atheism … it is about the city, or in particular, the mayor singularly reversing the Commission’s decision to install a private nativity scene on public property. A battle that I have been fighting for many, many years. A battle of Constitutional rights. A cause that will be taken up by the ACLU.

It is a matter of the Establishment Clause and you narrow-minded F’ers co’opted my gig for your own misuse.

Sorry this was upsetting to your delicate atheistic sensibilities (who’d ever imagined!).

But, in defense of my rights, and by proxy your rights, I intend to be an a’hole. A really famous a’hole now! Suck them apples.

So, instead of flaming me, you’d should celebrate someone actually getting out from behind the Internet and actually doing something.

Or plan B… More Internet Tough Guy behavior — let your flaming continue.

Whoosh and therefore more idiocy from Chaz Stevens. I’ll explain, please read slowly . . . Modusoperandi is making fun of how Christianists sometimes explain away those in their group that even they concede are acting like the village idiot. Modus is jokingly implying atheists should use that same rhetorical fallacy here to distance themselves not necessarily from your protest, but your idiotic rhetoric that’s attendant to it.

More whoosh [reading comprehension failures] follows @ 6 as Chaz Stevens falsely claims it’s we that don’t get it. Chaz – we already “got it”, Ed explained such in his blog post. Instead he and we are criticizing you not for your protest but as Ed put it, your being juvenile and stupid. Given your comment post you’re now vividly illustrating the very idiocy Ed originally criticized.

Is @6 for real? I wouldn’t be surprised if it is someone taking the character to the next level of absurdity (” I intend to be an a’hole. A really famous a’hole now! Suck them apples”), but then again, we can play along as if it is real just for the entertainment of it all.

So, instead of flaming me, you’d should celebrate someone actually getting out from behind the Internet and actually doing something.

The ignorance is rather impressive. Your position is that: If someone does something worthy of criticism (like, say, being an immature prick), we shouldn’t criticize, but rather praise the fact that they are doing so in public rather than online. You think the circumstances of the action (online/offline) are more important than the action itself (appropriate/inappropriate).

I can’t even play along anymore. This has to be someone pretending to be the idiot.

True. Chaz Stevens would be far more valuable to us if he joined a xian death cult.

He would be even more valuable if he grew a brain and used it.

It’s a sad fact that, as the number of atheists approach the number of people in the USA, the number of atheist assholes will approach the number of assholes in the USA. This happens when a subset is almost the size of a set.

  14. 14
    raven

There is and always will be atheists who aren’t great human beings, like Chaz Stevens who clearly doesn’t seem very bright but does seem to be immature.

All we can do is condemn them when it happens!!! And hope they join the fundie xians.

    1. Of course, we could just borrow the fundie’s premade excuses.

    It’s a false flag operation.
    Xians do it too.
You can’t prove Chaz Stevens is an atheist (he is just mad at god and wants to commit sins according to many xians). and:

Chaz Stevens isn’t a Real Atheist.

But let’s not. Supposedly we are mostly better than them.

Actually, it looks more like you’re just being an asshole for the sake of becoming a famous asshole. If you are serious about fighting for the separation of church and state, I sugges that you Google Jessica Alquist for some lessons in maturity.

Jesus, talk about ducking into the punch. When accused of being a self-aggrandizing asshole, show up and be even more of an asshole and then say “I’ll be famous for this, you’ll see!” I think I may have overestimating when I guessed 12 years old.

And this attempt to deflect attention from the juvenile behavior to the cause is quite absurd. It’s like someone who decides to torture a puppy in front of an audience to protest slavery, then when criticized for torturing a puppy accusing their critics of not understanding how bad slavery is. Yeah, I certainly get that the constitutional issue is a genuine one. It’s an issue I’ve been writing about and speaking about for more than a decade. I’m currently writing a book on the subject and I have worked with the ACLU, Americans United and other groups who litigate such issues for pretty much all of my adult life. But the legitimacy of the issue does not justify your childish behavior, either in your youtube video or your comment here.

I disagree your leaving does you a, “big favor”. Leaving is consistent with conservative Christian behavior. That it’s best to insulate oneself from those who point out what you’ve got wrong so you don’t have to adapt to defensible behavior and positions.

Leaving rather than considering the criticism we’ve presented to you does better insure you continue to earn your candidacy as atheism’s virtual village idiot.

Assuming this is true, you get an “A” for effort. And an “F” for competence. This is an “own goal” as the Brits say. Meaning you kicked the soccer ball into the goal which is good but, it was…your own side’s goal, not the opponents.

Really, this sounds kind of ominous. Myacts of sedition, don’t do anything drastic or destructive. Please.

Do talk over your plans with a few people who have demonstrated thought and good judgement in the past.

Get a book or two out of the library on how to reach and persuade other people. This is a field that predates xianity by a few thousand years.

I don’t buy that the Internet equates to uselessness. It’s been one of the best things to happen for atheism since forever. Nor do I buy that doing things in person is necessarily better/more effectual.

For one, it enables individuals, such as myself, who are on the stronger end of social anxiety, to participate/help, where we otherwise wouldn’t.

  26. 26
    Jasper of Maine

    @23

“Festivus” is not and never has been a religion. The state has a clear case for denying this self-appointed exhibitionist.

It’s not up to the government to decide who is or isn’t a religion. That’s also incredibly dubious versus the first amendment. Otherwise, what’s to stop the government from declaring that anyone who isn’t a particular brand of Christianity doesn’t qualify under the first amendment, and not under the equal protection laws.

Even atheism qualifies as a religious preference, to be protected under those laws.

What if one’s religion is Loki-an, pranking and mocking other religions. Who is the government to say otherwise?

  27. 27
    gingerbaker

“This is exactly the kind of asshole behavior we do not need.”

    That’s debatable.

If there were three atheists in America, you might have point. But there are millions of atheists in America, and a certain percentage of them are going to exhibit behavior that some people are going to find offensive. Just like Christians – who we are happy to make excuses for when one of them does similarly awful stuff, because we know: one asshole does not represent an entire group.

So, when the day comes that you don’t take Chaz Stevens personally, we can finally start to relax. And finally feel entitled to the social acceptance we are all too reluctant to claim and leverage at this moment – (despite the fact that) -> the nonreligious represent the largest or second largest religious denomination in the country. We don’t need to apologize or cow tow or accept our place at the back of the bus.

So, I have less of a problem with Chaz being offensive, than with Ed being embarrassed about him.

If his two posts here are any indication, about the only thing chaz cares about is his 12.5 minutes of fame.

I wonder if we pointed out a random list of famous people, like say, Phil Robertson, he’d still think just being famous for being an asshole is a good thing. Maybe, if he thinks he can cash in somehow. I bet he’s a libertarian….

Chaz Stevens isn’t being criticized here for being “offensive”, a blatant attempt to move the goal posts. Instead he’s being criticized for, and I quote Ed, “

this is just juvenile and stupid.

He’s also being criticized for giving opponents to atheism ammunition to falsely describe the entire group. raven put it best by noting that Mr. Stevens is kicking the ball at the very goal he’s supposed to instead be defending.
