Rand Paul to Open GOP Racial Outreach Center

In a move that can only result in a rash of concussions from heads hitting desks, the Michigan Republican Party has decided to open an office in Detroit for outreach to African-American voters — and to invite Rand Paul to give the keynote address at the opening of that office.

The Michigan GOP is seeking to increase the party’s visibility in the Democratic stronghold of Detroit, 97.5 percent of which voted to reelect Barack Obama in 2012.

The solution? Open a new outreach center for Detroit voters, named the “African American Engagement Office.”

The GOP has tapped Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) to headline the official opening of the office on Dec. 6, which will highlight “the Michigan Republican Party’s outreach efforts and our commitment to revitalizing Michigan’s urban centers,” according to the Eventbrite listing…

Both the name of the office and the outreach strategy are already attracting their share of detractors. One Republican strategist told The Huffington Post that it sounds like Michigan Republicans are opening a “‘separate, but equal’ office in Detroit.”

“The party should have an office in Detroit, but calling it the ‘African American Engagement Office’ is absurd, offensive and pathetic,” the source told The Huffington Post on background.

Rand Paul. The guy who opposes the anti-discrimination laws in the Civil Rights Act and thinks businesses should be allowed to refuse to hire or serve people on the basis of their race. That’s their choice to open an office to appeal to black people and convince them to vote Republican. Well I guess since Jesse Helms and Strom Thurmond are dead, he was the obvious choice. Now watch him show up in blackface carrying a big plate of fried chicken and watermelon.

Maybe he’ll get his father, or some of those who contributed to his father’s newsletter, to give outreach talks.

Ed, since when are you posting articles from the Onion?

… Wait, it’s NOT from the Onion?

People, please, this is the 21st Century. He’ll probably raffle off a set of DVDs with the complete series of Amos ‘n’ Andy

I’m sure he’ll tell a rousing tale of bootstrapping blacks from the Reconstruction era who didn’t get any help from government and fended for themselves, and how we need to get back to that sort of enterprising America. I wonder if he’ll ask the crowd if they knew Lincoln was a Republican.

Why do I get the feeling that on the front door there is a sign that says, “Employee Entrance Only, All others please use door in back.”

Maybe he’ll lead everyone in a rousing rendition of “De Camptown Races” , assuming anyone else knows the song.

It’s nice to see the Republicans putting so much effort into getting out the vote.

Hmmm. Maybe the purpose of this office is to inform black voters where and when they should show up at the polls. I would double check that info.

    African American Engagement Office, huh?

Well, its better than their first idea for a name: The Blah People’s Office.

The same Rand Paul who promised to filibuster any and all attempts at new gun control legislation following the murder of Trayvon Martin?

I hope he stands tall for the rights of all those Detroiters to openly carry firearms at this and all other GOP events!

[Republicans at the club, sitting in plush chairs around the fireplace, snifters in one hand, Cuban cigars in the other...]

Repub 1: So, how do we get this new 501c money into our off-shore accounts?

Repub 2: We need to launder it somehow.

Repub 3: We need a front organization… but what?

Repub 4: I got it! We’ll open an outreach organization to woo black voters in Detroit!

All: Har har har har har har har … *cough* *cough* *cough* *hack* cough* !!!

Repub 1: That’s brilliant, Repub 4! And no one will question our motives!

    Ha ha ha ha.

What would be funny if the results in current outreach to minorities have, in 50 years, the same effect that outreach to the religious bigots did 50 years ago. Mainly, an aggressive movement that takes over the party, only this time based on issues of social justice.

    Ha ha ha ha.

But I’m betting that Rand Paul’s version of “outreach” isn’t actually recruitment of minorities and having them become in party politics and having a say in the party platform; rather, by “outreach” he means that he’s going to explain to them very carefully why it’s for their own good that they’re being punched in the face.

I phrase it as “Vote for us so we can save the country from you people”.

Chiroptera, you appear to be right. The following is a clip from the linked article:

“Paul will already be in Detroit to speak on the city’s bankruptcy crisis at the Detroit Economic Club, where he will “unveil his new legislative proposal to remove bankrupt Detroit and other economically blighted areas from poverty and the shackles of big government,” according to the Detroit Free Press.”

So presumably, yes, he will unveil his big plan, then stop by the “engagement office” to explain to the adoring crowd why, exactly, his plan is good for them.
