Rafael Cruz Disproves Evolution

Here’s another video of Rafael Cruz, wingnut father of Sen. Ted Cruz and his primary political surrogate, saying really stupid things about evolution. In this one, he pulls out an argument that I’m sure he thinks is the silver bullet that destroys evolution: Mutations are bad.

Let me just say something for you kids, evolution is based on jumping from one species to another through mutations. How many of you had biology in high school? Mutations normally go in reverse order, they go backwards, when something mutates it mutates into something worse than it was before. So if evolution moves from species to species by mutation, you’re going backwards, not forwards, it doesn’t make sense. It takes more faith to believe in evolution than to believe in the first two chapters of Genesis. Understand, it is a tool to destroy loyalty to God.

Let’s just hope Cruz never teaches high school biology. This is all nonsense. Most mutations are neutral. Most of the non-neutral ones are harmful. But a small percentage of them are beneficial and they can therefore be acted upon by natural selection. Funny how he tries to describe and debunk evolution without even mentioning the key mechanism by which species adapt, natural selection.

Sorry, but I’m going to be a pedant.

The same mutation may be neutral, harmful or beneficial depending on environmental factors. For example, a mutation may be advantageous during drought conditions, neutral in average conditions and harmful when rainfall is above average. If the climate shifts over the long term, or a population migrates to a different area, the mutation may be selected for. It may also be selected against, but I don’t think Ed really meant to imply that natural selection doesn’t act on harmful mutations..

The elder Cruz could represent the mutation response as AsqJames describes it. In some environments, his mutation is a positive, others neutral and others, (the majority I hope) a huge negative.

Still not sure if he stringing along the rubes or believes his nonsense.

I wonder what his response would be if someone asked him what mechanism ensured mutations could only go in one direction. Or if he’d understand the question

That’s easy … Eve listened to a snake.

Oh no, it was right wing watch. Gordo Klingon filed false DMCA charges against them and had their account terminated.

I hope he gets his ass sued off.

    +1 to
    AsqJames

I was going to say the exact same thing.

mutations are always measured relative to individual fitness effects within a population.

that’s the only place positive, negative, and neutral have any meaning.

Presumably Right Wing Watch, due to bogus DMCA takedowns from Gordon Klingenschmidt, who doesn’t like having a public record of the batshit crazy stuff he says.

sadly, this is why I have always encouraged anyone who actually relies on images or videos as part of their mission to make themselves and INDEPENDENT server for them.

it’s not hard, and you don’t have to put ALL of your videos on them, but it should be available as a backup, always.

never rely on third party server systems for mission critical stuff.

    never.

and not just for the reason that they can shut you down on a whim.
