West Point Hosts Gay Wedding

For the first time, two men have been married in a West Point chapel (two women married there last year), and that has predictably sent the bigots into a total tizzy. Fox Nation has an article about it and the comments there are pretty much exactly what you’d expect.

I wonder if I have this situation viewed correctly:

Military chaplains can marry Gay members in a military church BUT are not allowed to utter the word God or Jesus for fear it might offend Muslims?

No, you don’t have it viewed correctly. Not even close. Chaplains “utter the word God or Jesus” probably thousands of times every single day and no one tries to stop them.

The men who created our Military and fought and died for our nation are turning in their graves. Time to remove the leftists from power and restore sanity to our nation.

Yeah, just like they rolled over in their graves when Truman integrated the military and your predecessors were making the same stupid claim.

The Gay agenda

Is all about the Infringement

Of others culture, traditions, and value system

Which is Much Older than any Village People album

Look at how they respond to others comments

Attacking and Smearing

Honest Average hard working Veteran Americans

Who have served with honor and dignity

Before and in the Present

More Proof

The Gay agenda is a hateful at best

When others do not agree with their lifestyle choice

Its all about the tyranny of a few

Imposed on the many

Honest, hard working veteran Americans…unless they’re gay? What about the innumerable gay men who have served in the military with honor and distinction? Oh right, they don’t count. The only one being hateful here is this asshole.

They will never be a part of the Military family, their backs will never be protected!

What does that say about soldiers if they would refuse to protect one of their fellow soldiers because they’re gay?

Might as well start painting all Army planes, tanks, guns, and whatever else pink.

Awww, that’s cute. What are you, 12?

And the C UNTIFICATION of America continues . . . .

What? I don’t even…

Well, aren’t they just the cutest couple ever. If they ever make it into combat (which I doubt) the real soldiers will use them for bait.

Again, what does that say about the soldiers who would “use them for bait” (whatever that means)? This is a huge insult to the military that they seem to revere. And the exact same argument was used against racial integration of the military, that white soldiers would not fight for black soldiers. It was wrong then and it’s wrong now. When the bullets start flying, no one gives a shit who’s gay and who isn’t.

Is that third quote an attempt at poetry or have sentences joined the proper use of capital letters on the list of abominations?

The good news is that these comments are getting a lot of push back over there, interestingly the ones defending gay rights also seem to be the ones talking about having served. It’s almost as if the haters are just chickenhawks.

Why is that third quote written that way? Was it supposed to be a poetry slam or something?

Again, what does that say about the soldiers who would “use them for bait” (whatever that means)?

When the muslims see them and come running to try to eat them, of course. He thinks the Walking Dead is a news broadcast from Iraq.

Someone really needs to investigate the energy generating potential of rotating corpses, I gather it’s a more and more common phenomenon and it may solve a lot of problems.

  5. dugglebogey says

You have to wonder about people who think not allowing them to enforce their religious rules on other people is EXACTLY the same as being forced to have homosexual sex.

Seriously, they are opposed to being made aware the homosexuality exists, which is the same as being anally raped in their opinion.

This is mental illness, isn’t it?

Men like General Von Stueben, the Prussian who helped Washington make the Continental Army into professionals? He had to leave Prussia because of a gay scandal.

This is true. Our base chaplin says God Bless to those he knows are Christians when he is walking around our spaces and gives candy to everyone else. No complaints here.

“When the bullets start flying, no one gives a shit who’s gay and who isn’t.”

So true and from my personal experience, people can really surprise you in combat. Sometimes the person you think is going to be a hero ends up being the one who freezes up in the middle of a gunfight and the person you thought was a liability who would get someone killed ends up being the hero. Back in WW2 there were bomber crews who couldn’t believe a “bunch of black fellers in P-51s” saved their asses, and while some never changed their bigotry, for many others it created a situation that destroyed their misconceptions. Down the road it wouldn’t surprise me if in some far off conflict soldier’s misconceptions will be similarly destroyed by the openly gay soldier who saves their life. No doubt it’s already happened during the GWOT, with the gay soldier who runs into a mine field to recover a wounded comrade or the lesbian at the CSH who helps stabilize you for the trip back to Germany.

Hmmm. Only see about 6 comments and they are all pretty mild mannered, even for anti-gay rhetoric. What happened to the rest of the comments?

Sometime gay baiting, like race baiting or poor baiting, works too well.

He misspelled “hatful.” It consists only of “we want the same rights they have.”

And the exact same argument was used against racial integration of the military, that white soldiers would not fight for black soldiers. It was wrong then and it’s wrong now.

Well, I don’t think we can say that argument was entirely wrong then. The military’s racial integration in the 50s was followed by 20+ years of racial tension, conflict and yeah, even violence. Barracks race fights were depressingly common, especially in the army, well into the late 70s. Most historians acknowledge that racial tensions contributed heavily to our military’s dysfunction in Vietnam. (Obviously there were plenty of other problems there.) Now you can say the value gained by integration outweighed those problems – and I would absolutely agree with you. But pretending that racially integrating the military was a painless process is just denialism.

What does that say about soldiers if they would refuse to protect one of their fellow soldiers because they’re gay?

It says, soldiers being human beings and all, that their prejudices don’t magically evaporate when they put on a uniform. There are still plenty of anti-gay bigots in American society who act that way; why would you assume the military would be any different? (Especially since the type of people who join the military tend to be more Southern, more rural, and more socially conservative.)
    .
I think the big differences between integrating blacks then and integrating gays now is that acceptance of gays is much more mainstream in 2012 than racial integration was in 1950. Frankly as much as I was in favor of repealing DADT, I really didn’t expect the transition to be this smooth. I can’t think of a time I’ve been happier to be proved wrong!

  13. says

    @14:

The problem of racial tensions in society pervasive and enduring.

The military and other government controlled organizations have an option that is unavailable to the rest of civil society. They can RUIN your career, shitcan you and put you in the pokey for failing to follow lawful orders. That they don’t is the main reason that this nonsense continues.

They should have executed Jeff Davis and the rest of his coterie as the traitors that they surely were.

He didn’t assume anything of the sort; he just implied that any soldier who would deliberately place their comrade in danger because of said comrade’s sexual orientation is a shit person. And that implication is 100% true.

  15. wscott says

@ 16: Agreed that the military could’ve/should’ve done more, tho it’s not quite as simple as you make it sound. And plenty of civil organizations have similar tools available to them; the medical & legal worlds spring to mind.

@ 19: Fair enough. (And I agree they’re a shit person.) I thought Ed’s OP seemed surprised that such shit people would exist in the military, or implied that their existence was somehow the militray’s fault. But that could’ve just been me.

  16. Ichthyic says

Seriously, they are opposed to being made aware the homosexuality exists, which is the same as being anally raped in their opinion.

not according the the APA, but really, yes, it is.

  17. Ichthyic says

The military’s racial integration in the 50s was followed by 20+ years of racial tension, conflict and yeah, even violence.

    you’re an idiot.

    why?

because that has FUCK ALL to do with whether a black soldier could contribute to our military exactly in the same way as a white one.

That was the real question, and it was answered without question in positive fashion.

what YOU”RE saying is that the real problem with military cohesiveness is not race… it’s BIGOTRY.

  18. wscott says

    you’re an idiot.

Well as long as you’re arguing in good faith…

because that has FUCK ALL to do with whether a black soldier could contribute to our military exactly in the same way as a white one.

Never said it did. What conversation are you reading?

That was the real question, and it was answered without question in positive fashion.

Nooo, the question being discussed here was about acceptance of blacks/gays by white/straight soldiers, and specifically about the possibility of violence against them.

what YOU”RE saying is that the real problem with military cohesiveness is not race… it’s BIGOTRY.

No shit it’s bigotry! Of course. What’s your point? That it shouldn’t matter, and we should expect soldiers’ prejudices to magically evaporate when they put on the uniform? That’s pretty naive, doncha think? Or that the benefits of desegregation outweighed the cost? I already said I agree.
    .
But pretending it didn’t happen is simply dishonest.
