No, Dearborn Did Not Institute Sharia Law

The National Report, a political satire website, published an article about the city of Dearborn, which is about 50% Arab and Muslim, voting to become the first city to make Sharia law enforceable. Naturally, right wing websites missed the fact that it was a parody and repeated it as factual without doing any research.

In a surprise weekend vote, the city council of Dearborn, Michigan voted 4-3 to became the first US city to officially implement all aspects of Sharia Law. The tough new law, slated to go into affect January 1st, addresses secular law including crime, politics and economics as well as personal matters such as sexual intercourse, fasting, prayer, diet and hygiene.

The new law could see citizens stoned for adultery or having a limb amputated for theft. Lesser offenses, such as drinking alcohol or abortion, could result in flogging and/or caning. In addition, the law imposes harsh laws with regards to women and allows for child marriage.

Ever heard of the term ‘Dearbornistan’? The largest mosque in North America is in Dearborn, Michigan. Some 40,000 Arab-Americans live there, about half of the towns population. It also has the largest Lebanese-American population in America. I am a little suprised there isnt any strife there connected to Syria at all. The city has the largest proportion of Arab-Americans in the US. So it only makes sense that Shriah is first implemented here. Thoughts? Shariah is here in America!

Thoughts? You should do some research before passing on something that is obviously false. Just because it conforms to what you want to be true doesn’t make it true. The funny thing is that even though dozens of commenters pointed out that it’s satire, others just plowed on with hysterical reaction to the article:

Beck was right.. Get the Hell out of America while you can…

This is illegal and the non muslim citizens need to take up there guns and take there government back. This is a complete religious law and goes against the Constitution as they beet into our heads with separation of church and state. If we don’t stand against it now the picture at the top will become true…

I hope the city is prepared for a lot of innocent non Muslim murders and slaughters…

This is the same kind of crap that has almost destroyed Great Britain!…

Only 40.000 they breed like wild cock roaches, they are lower than a cock roach!…

Are you serious!!!! This is the United States, not Syria or Lebanon or any other Arab nation. This country was founded based on religious freedom. So for me, practice what you want, just don’t try to force your shit on me. But to adopt Shitria law in an American city, that is totally wrong, I don’t care what the majority of the population is> This is not the West Bank and the property lines are not up for debate. If you want your BS law, take it and you back to where you came from and stay there. We did not ask you to come here, and we definitely did not ask for Sharia law nor do we want it. It is about 1200 years behind the times no matter how you see it. This is just another notch in the weapon Obamasama is using to destroy (change) America and the sheeple just don’t have their eyes open wide enough to see this travesty…

CAN YOU ALL SAY THANK YOU OBAMA …… OR LIKE ME AND SAY OBAMA AND THEM CAN GO BACK HOME. LEAVE OUR COUNTRY TO US…

This is totally illegal according to the Constitution of the United States as it is strictly a “religious law”. This is NOT what our Military have fought and died for!!!

The American Citizens in Dearborn need to take up arms or whatever else is necessary to reclaim their government and their American Way of Life…

I knew it was Dearborn! Hezbollah’s headquarters are there…

So, public lashing, chopping off hands, stoning to death, beheading infidels, and hanging homosexuals is perfectly fine with these officials. Or is it another law they didn’t read before they passed it?

Reading is fundamental.

It would be nice to think those deranged commenters were just playing along. But no.

There are way too many satire sites that are just not that good. Why shouldn’t people think this is a serious news story – there’s nothing in it to give a clue that it’s satire. Sorry guys – you’re not The Onion.

It is my information that a substantial portion of the Arab population of Dearborn consists of Christians, most of whom are originally from Lebanon.

tiredofusernamerules, the problem isn’t that there are too many satirical sites. The problem is that, with the sweeping changes to reality over the last decade (or more), satire is obsolete.

That site is freaking hilarious. The comments on the Obama porn one are seriously headdesk worthy.

America’s Number #1 Independent News Team – Ted Cruz / Sarah Palin isn’t enough of a clue, along with all the other headlines that scroll?

You can teach reading. You can’t teach an ability to recognize parody or satire. That requires the desire as well as the ability to sense when something is off. Many of the sucked-in lack that desire.

Why shouldn’t people think this is a serious news story…

Because they (people) usually have brains?
Because the story is patently ridiculous?
Because the echo-chamber repeating the story as-if it were fact have a habit of hubris, scare-mongering, lack of research, disconnection from reality, et al.?

It’s that third point which is perhaps the most relevant here: The original satire was picked-up by other sites which claim to (or at least allude to being) reliable. Then the “people” had a case of twisted panties. A truely reliable site would do some basic fact-checking: On the original source, and also on the story itself (e.g., contact the Dearborn authorities and ask). They obviously failed to do so.

So a much better question is something like: Why should people believe anything they read in the wingnut echo-chamber?

Lots of people go foaming at the mouth over Onion articles, too. Quality’s got nothing to do with it.

Is this guy upset that he is not the one hanging homosexuals? Glenn, your fans are getting soft.

Mohammad didn’t say he wanted the gay men hanged. He said he likes his gay men well hung. Small, little known mix up in transcription.

“National Report” shows up regularly as the source of of right-wing rumors on Snopes “What’s New” page. As far as I can tell, their articles are not so much satire as deliberate lies intended to stir up the wingnuts.

I just checked Snopes. Two of the current “Hot 25″ were rumors started by “National Report”. I was surprised it wasn’t more. They were “Obama declares November Muslim Appreciation Month” and “Obamma suffered a mental breakdown”. There are a couple of other “satirical” rumor starting sites in the list as well.

So NOW they’re interested in the separation of church and state. Seems like they only forget about it when it’s their church. Hmmmm.

Translating ancient Arabic to English has always been problematical. Almost as difficult as English to Teabagger.

This reminds me of the people who treated “News Stories” from the Onion, as if they were fact.

How ironic is it that NOW those commenters are concerned about how illegal and unconstitutional it is to force religious laws upon those who do not follow that religion?
This should be used as an argument against them by everyone.

“The new law could see citizens stoned for adultery or having a limb amputated for theft. Lesser offenses, such as drinking alcohol or abortion, could result in flogging and/or caning.”

In other words the result could be the same as instituting the bible-based laws that the Christofascists want.

Of course in real life, if the City of Dearborn even attempted to do this, it wouldn’t be just the American religious right or anti Muslim bigots who would be up in arms. Not to mention how it would be all over the news media, and liberal blogs.

    I like this one:
So, public lashing, chopping off hands, stoning to death, beheading infidels, and hanging homosexuals is perfectly fine with these officials. Or is it another law they didn’t read before they passed it?

And so the poster comments without reading the previous posts. The irony of acting on something not read is lost on this one. I note also that they post en masse like they argue – they repeat themselves endlessly (one might say interminably) and angrily

These folks truly have an internal world view that consists of non sequitors. Coherence, for them (if they consider it all), is entirely emotional content. For instance,
    “Obama is a liberal.”
    “Obama is a communist.”
    “Obama is a fascist.”
    “Obama is a socialist”

Are all consistent and mutually compatible for two reasons.
    1. All of those nouns are equivalent to “ungood”, and therefore can be used interchangeably.
    2. All of those sentences explain why Obama is a bad man. (They explain it by asserting it, of course. What did you think?)

there’s nothing in it to give a clue that it’s satire.

Yes there is. For one thing, the sheer improbability of it gives it away.

The problem lies with people who have no desire or ability to find out what is real and what is fantasy.

There are enough of them that Glenn Beck and all the other christofascists conpeople can become very rich feeding their lies and hate back to them.

Here’s a site a friend just forwarded me with an interesting spin on satire. On demand it highlights all the facts that the satire is based upon.

For one thing, the sheer improbability of it gives it away.

Yeah, I agree with this. Otherwise, it’s missing the bite and outlandishness that makes for a good Onion article.

The improbability goes well beyond the fact that Dearborn would never pass such a resolution. “Sharia law” is a vague concept that Muslim scholars themselves can’t easily define, and there is no written code of it anywhere, so even if Dearborn had mandated Sharia Law, we wouldn’t even know what that meant. And then to make things worse, the supposedly scary parts of it are all things that the right has supported to various degrees for decades and that the left has been constantly battling them over.

So it fails to make sense on any level. But of course the problem is that wingnuts can’t understand these things.

raven: Yes there is. For one thing, the sheer improbability of it gives it away.

The news site has an article reporting that Godzilla attacked the Fukushima plant, apparently outraged at its effects after the tsunami and quake.

Yes. These kind of folks do not have a clue how the world works and aren’t interested, and so do not know how to judge the likelihood of, say, a multigenerational global conspiracy of scientists to fake evidence in one field of science. Or the chances of a baby in Kenya being successfully chosen to become the future US president. Or the odds that they were born into a family that practiced the one true religion.

This is the same kind of crap that has almost destroyed Great Britain!…

Huh? *looks out of window* We got destroyed? When?

Granted, we here in the UK have a fucking terrible record of opposing Sharia law, but it’s not the law of the land and we’re hardly destroyed. It seems exaggeration, poor spelling and caps lock are a requirement on the right wing.

Of course tubi, after all there’s a 50 percent chance the fetus is female and, as per Abrahamic religious tradition, worthless. And besides, only a first born son is needed to carry on the name so every subsequent son is just another drain on resources.
