Seriously, Inhofe?

Every day I write about this stuff, but I still find it astonishing how brazenly wingnuts are either A) completely disconnected from reality or B) blatant liars. Sen. James Inhofe, who may be the dumbest man in the Senate, delivered this whopper on Sunday:

On Sunday, Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.) said that if Obamacare had been fully in place this year, he probably would have died of a heart attack. That’s not true.

After going in for a routine colonoscopy a few weeks ago, Inhofe’s doctors found that his arteries were dangerously clogged, so they immediately took him to the ER, the 79-year-old senator told Aaron Klein on his WABC radio show Sunday. He suggested that if he had been living a part of the world with “socialized medicine like Obama is trying to impose upon America,” he never would have gotten the life-saving surgery: “A person can find out, here in the US, that he has this emergency situation where he has got to have immediate heart surgery. And if you are in a country other than the US, a lot of them, you can’t get it done. In my case, with my age, that would have been about a six-month wait. Because I hadn’t had a heart attack,” Inhofe said.

It’s just staggering, it really is. I can only conclude that he has to be lying. He’s a senator, for crying out loud, he can’t be that ignorant. He could, however, be deluded. Hell, he is deluded. But this is so utterly out of touch with reality that it just leaves your jaw agape. In no developed country in the world would he not have been treated, including in those countries with actual socialized medicine, which we do not have. He has private insurance. After Obamacare, he will continue to have private insurance. And every single private insurance policy in the country has and will continue to pay for the treatment he needed. Period. It’s that fucking simple.

But you know what Obamacare does? It ensures that his insurance company can’t drop him, no matter how much his heart problems cost to treat. It ensures that no insurance company can refuse to give him a policy now that he has that pre-existing condition. It ensures that his insurance company can’t put caps on how much they’ll pay for his treatment. In every way, Inhofe is better off after Obamacare.

CS Lewis famously said that Jesus was either a liar, a lunatic or the lord. In the same vein, wingnuts who say things like this are either dumb, deluded or dishonest. Or all three.

Yea, I’m really confused when people say that it’s socialized medicine, when it’s not single payer and there is no public option.

Emergency surgeries are what Socialized medicine is good at.
    Heart attack? You’re in.
    Brain tumor? You’re in.
    Cancer? You’re in.
Need a hip replaced? That has a line.

Is that supposed to sound like a bad thing to me?

It’s amazing that he has this exactly backwards. Before Obamacare, what was to stop the insurance companies from dropping him the moment he became unhealthy? After all, his health issues directly interfere with the company’s ability to turn a profit. And anyway, he can’t sue them if he’s dead.

    It’s gets weirder. He’s 67.

Which they’d do for anyone, regardless of their insurance or ability to pay. (Though if you had no insurance at all, you probably wouldn’t go in for routine preventive care in the first place.) The only potential difference is what happens to you financially afterword.

And, if he would have been in the ranks of the uninsured, he would not be getting a “routine colonscopy” that enabled them to find the problem.

  9. Michael Heath says

No time to find now though it shouldn’t be hard to google, but evidence suggests Sen. Inhofe is this dumb and disconnected from reality. Look up the story about how he tried landing his plane on a runway that was not available and had vehicles parked on it.

The shrillness and hyperbole is no surprise. The political immunity of the VA and medicare programs is an object lesson to how this is going to go. Their only winning strategy is to prevent service at the outset, by any means possible. Because once it’s delivered for a few years, it doesn’t take a genius to understand that they’ll have absolutely no chance of repealing it.

  11. moarscienceplz says

They did a colonoscopy on him and found clogged heart arteries???
Wow, that it one DEEP colonoscopy!

I’ll bet he’s never actually grilled by a journalist asking him to supply some evidence of his assertion and then when he tries to deflect persisting until they get an answer.

This fucking asshole is almost certainly covered by the Government’s health insurance for federal employees. Under the government plan, the insurance companies can’t drop you or deny coverage based on an existing condition when hired. The poor schmucks in the private sector only wish they had a plan like that! AFAIK, government employees are totally unaffected by the ACS.

  15. Trebuchet says

So he’s 78? He’s on, or should have been on, socialized medicine (Medicare) for 13 years now. Once you’re eligible for Medicare, Obamacare is a non-issue.

If the ACA becomes a dismal failure, I wouldn’t be surprised if private insurace companies have a hand in it.

Not sure why they would. Fines for not enrolling with your products, subsidies from the government for those who can’t afford your products…

Getting off the issue of Inhofe for just a moment…

CS Lewis famously said that Jesus was either a liar, a lunatic or the lord.

I hate that line. First off, it leaves off a fourth, much more probable choice: legend. Even assuming the historicity of Jesus, the huge numbers of myths that we know have built up around real people should make us doubt that the miraculous claims even started there rather than accumulating over time. Secondly, though, why do the (almost always Christian) people using that so blindly assume so often that lord is the *most* likely of those three? I can see much greater reason to suspect either liar or lunatic as the more likely answer any day, and I don’t even have to look beyond cult leaders of the last few decades for validation of this.

    Re holytape @ #20

Inhofe had the operation before the law was passed so he was still covered by the Federal Employee’s Insurance Plan.

Evidence suggests the good Senator (I use the word “good” ironically) has gone emeritus — perhaps due to his clogged arteries. And why, I wonder, is it only now that he’s been made aware of their condition (assuming that is the case)?

But he was always deluded, or pretending to be in order to keep the campaign donations flowing from fossil-fuel interests.

Here’s a link to his 2003 Senate floor speech, in which he introduced the phrase “the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people.” Note that I have added some comments at the beginning.

I’ve also kept three spelling errors that occur in the original. Which is why I can ask, rhetorically, “Why does Senator Inhofe criticize the president for wanting to improse benefitical measures on the Amverican public?”

And maybe he’d have been treated much sooner if he wasn’t a Sooner:

America’s Health Rankings® Senior Report shows Minnesota at the top of the list of healthiest states for older adults. Vermont is ranked second and New Hampshire is third, followed by Massachusetts and Iowa. Mississippi is ranked 50th as the least healthy state for older adults. Oklahoma, Louisiana, West Virginia, and Arkansas complete the bottom 5 states -

For pure dumbness, Inhofe is the MAM (Most Absolute MorAn) of the Senate, and has been his entire tenure.

On the other hand, if he moved to the House, he wouldn’t even receive consideration.

To vote Republican or be a conservative these days is to state in public that you are stupid, ignorant, insane and or evil – and most definitely in the service of evil.

Uh Jimbo: Do tell us about the colonoscopy… Was the procedure easier for you than any of the other patients. One would expect so since you have the biggest orifice in the Senate.
