Hagee: Secular Humanism Causes Everything Bad

John Hagee delivered one of his usual fire-breathing sermons last Sunday, claiming that secular humanism is a “pagan God” that “has filled our drug rehab centers, it has filled our divorce courts, it has filled our shelters for battered wives. Secular humanism has filled our rape crisis centers, our mental hospitals, our singles bars.” Given that less than 5% of the country are secular humanists, we must be busy as hell. I’d ask Hagee for some evidence for those claims, but that would be pointless, wouldn’t it?

Nothing like the good old days when divorce was banned and half of all marriages ended in abandonment by the husband.

He discerned it. He feels it in his heart of hearts. That’s all the evidence that the faithful need.

  3. Ogvorbis: Apologies Available for All! says

Well, in a way he is correct.

Without secular humanism, those with drug addictions, or alcohol addictions, would be ignored and would die. Without secular humanism, divorce would only be used in extreme situations — like when the man’s chattel wife was barren; or got too old. Without secular humanism, there would be no shelters for abused women or abused children because they would still be the legal property of the husband/father/household god. And rape survivors would stay silent so they would not be shunned, or would marry the rapist. Mental illness would be treated through torture exorcism. Without secular humanism, women would not be allowed out of the house unescorted by their owner/brother/father/husband. So he is correct. Totally wrong, but still correct. Just not the way he thinks.

secular humanism… “has filled our drug rehab centers, divorce courts, shelters for battered wives, rape crisis centers, mental hospitals”

Good for secular humanism providing support for drug addicts, abused women and the mentally ill. Why does he think this is a bad thing? He surely can’t imagine that if we didn’t have places to deal with these issues they would disappear, oh wait he does think that.

….claiming that secular humanism is a “pagan God”…

    No it’s not.

As a sometime Pagan, I wish Hagee and the rest wouldn’t be so ignorant.

has filled our drug rehab centers, it has filled our divorce courts plus more false accusations.

Mostly Pagans just go to parties.

What is associated with social problems is Hagee’s fundie xianity. Fundies score low socioeconomically and high in any social problem you care to name. They have higher rates of divorce, teenage pregnancy, and child sexual abuse than the general population.

Maybe, unlike Hagee, you can provide “evidence for those claims.”

To rephrase this in their own language, “Get the plank out of your own eye, Hagee.”

    dan4 trolling some more:

    I have.

    You ignored it.

I’m not going to waste my time on a troll.

For the rest of you, here is some data on divorce rates.

Nondenominational xians which is a good standin for “fundie” have the highest divorce rates. Atheists have the lowest. This data is from a xian polling group.

The Barna Research Group’s national study showed that members of

nondenominational churches divorce 34 percent of the time in contrast to 25 percent for the general population.

Nondenominational churches would include large numbers of Bible churches and other conservative evangelicals. Baptists had the highest rate of the major denominations: 29 percent. Born-again Christians’ rate was 27 percent. To make matters even more distressing for believers, atheists/agnostics had the lowest rate of divorce 21 percent.

Barna is an evangelical polling organization.

Oddly enough, I’ve never seen any indication that their polling is biased. Barna seems to be one of those who believes good data is important.

Given that less than 5% of the country are secular humanists, we must be busy as hell.

But you see, to Hagee and his ilk, anyone who doesn’t want to use the government to enforce their religious views are “secular” and if they express any concern for anyone outside their tribal group, then they are “humanists.” In short, they think the majority of Americans are secular humanists, despite their being practicing theists of one stripe or another.

  12. stever says

I think Hagee is specifically blaming secular humanists because they are a small minority. Pick a minority, point to it as the cause of all social ills, stir up the mob, demand that the government Do Something… I seem to have heard that before.

  13. theignored says

Preachers, especially those like him, are parasites. I have yet to see any effing televangelist follow christ’s advice about selling all they have and giving to the poor. People like Bill Gates and Warren Buffet went halfway there! Churches don’t even pay taxes. Yet that didn’t stop Hagee from telling people who to vote for (or rather, NOT to vote for) in the election…

    And they whine about “persecution”?

Hagee and those like him feed on the bigotry and self-righeousness that fundy xians have. Then there’s his pro-war position in the middle east to clear the way for the “second coming of christ”…

  14. says

“…that secular humanism…’has filled our drug rehab centers, it has filled our divorce courts, it has filled our shelters for battered wives…[it] has filled our rape crisis centers, our mental hospitals, our singles bars.'”

Thank goodness for the singles bars, or the statistics would be all bad.

For some reason I suspect Hagee’s definition of “secular humanism” is going to be more than a bit off.

Since when have secular humanists “approved the teaching of the principles of witchcraft” in public schools?

I know, it’s silly to pick on just one thing. But wtf?

  16. smrnda says

As others have said, it’s a good thing to have secular humanists working with vulnerable populations. They don’t see vulnerable people as possible recruits for a cult.

It’s clearly not a typo or some other sort of error that we all make from time to time. I have occasionally mixed up my negatives and positives when posting. But surely he didn’t intend to complain that secular humanists want to prevent teaching witchcraft in schools?

It shows clearly that he doesn’t understand what he’s talking about, or that he is utterly uninterested int he truth of what he says, and knows that his targeted audience will not ever double check on what he claims.

Oh, I forgot to add the part about creepy dudes in suits singing old gospel songs a cappella, all the while on a set that looks like a nightmare version of MTV Unplugged.

Why yes, I do watch this stuff as entertainment.
