Bryan Fischer Award: David Horowitz

The Bryan Fischer Award is given to those who display astonishing levels of projection, accusing their enemies of their own worst sins. This award goes to David Horowitz, who says that liberals consider “anybody who doubts or opposes their program as the party of Satan.” No, David. We don’t believe in Satan. You do.

An authentic religion understands that only a divinity can repair the world. Progressives think they can repair the world, that’s why they’re so dangerous. And that’s why they’re so intolerant. If you believe that you can create the kingdom of heaven on earth, what crime will you not commit, what lie will you not tell? Even more, when you look at people who oppose you, you see them as the devil’s party. Very, very important to understand that…People who are called liberals, people who call themselves progressives, or leftists, or socialists see themselves as an Army of the Saints redeeming the world. They don’t believe in a divine redemption; they believe in a redemption on this earth created by them. Therefore they see anybody who doubts or opposes their program as the party of Satan.”

Wow. That is some serious projection. I don’t know any liberal who either wants to or thinks they can create “heaven on earth.” There is no such thing as heaven, or valhalla, or utopia for that matter. We do think that we can and should help make the world a better place, that we should take actions to bring greater freedom, justice and equality to those who don’t have those things. And the only people I ever hear claiming that those who disagree with them are the party of Satan are conservatives, on a daily basis.

It should be pointed out that Horowitz was a Trotskyite as a college student. Amazing how many Trotskyites migrate into right wing fruitiness as they grow older.

colnago: I’m trying to remember who said that a “neoconservative” was someone who fled from the stupidity of the left straight to the stupidity of the right.

    @2 & 3,

The reason is that the far left and the far right have a stronger commitment to authoritarianism than they do to any specific issues.

  4. matty1 says

That would explain it, the idea that political action can create a paradise sounds a lot more like Marxism-Leninism than any kind of liberal thought. Of course once you get far enough right everything left of you starts to look the same.

“I don’t know any liberal who either wants to or thinks they can create ‘heaven on earth.'”

I do. And it’ll have a roller coaster and cotton candy and a midway and everything!

Or maybe I think I can create a “theme park on Earth”. One of those.

Once a fringe loon, always a fringe loon. Just goes to bat for a different (better paying) team.

Wow. Just…just wow. I think he was looking at a mirror and reminding himself to say “liberal” anytime his words came too close to his own beliefs. Otherwise, why, he’d just sound crazy, amirite?

Nothing is true, everything is permitted?

If you believe that you can create the kingdom of heaven on earth, what crime will you not commit, what lie will you not tell?

What if your definition of “heaven on earth” is one wherein there isn’t crime and people are basically honest with each other? I mean, why would we have to commit crimes and tell terrible lies to try to encourage people to be and treat each other better? That’s what you do when you follow a bankrupt belief system that only serves to tell people they’re awful and the only thing that can fix them is a set of magical incantations followed by intervention by an outside source (that, conveniently, will leave the important intervention until after you die).

As an atheist I believe this is the closest to heaven anyone’s going to get. And Horowitz and company keep shitting on the rug.

If you believe that you can create the kingdom of heaven on earth, what crime will you not commit, what lie will you not tell?

If you believe you’re doing god’s will, whom will you NOT rape, what babies will you not impale? Don’t tell me those weren’t “true Christians” (or even “true Jews.”)

Maybe we can create our own tiny, momentary bubbles of heaven on earth, but he seems to be starting with a strawman, setting it on fire, putting it out by peeing on it, scooping up the ashes, and doing lines with them he’s so far out there.

“You know what they do? Let me tell you. Gather around children…”

  12. busterggi says

This extremely evil Satan guy, does Fischer explain who created him & why? Because only a dumbass or more evil monster would create someone like that.

  13. wscott says

No, David. We don’t believe in Satan. You do.

It may be true that most atheists identify as liberal/progressive (I don’t know the numbers), but I’m pretty sure the reverse is not true, ie – most liberals (in the US) are religious, with probably a majority of them Christians. Let’s not reinforce the right’s belief that and they alone own Christianity. [/pedant]
Horowitz is still full of shit tho.

Eric Hoffer said that you can convert a True Believer® to another ideological path, but you can’t make him (her) a reasonable man (woman).

Ask a Jew (or a liberal, or gay, or intellectual*) what the difference was between Stalin and Hitler.

    * No implication of course that these are non-overlapping Venn circles.

Horowitz: `An authentic religion understands that only a divinity can repair the world.’.

In Judaism, it’s mandatory for everyone to participate in tikkun olam, which roughly means `repairing the world’. Different strands of Judaism interpret this differently, but liberal Jews generally interpret that as working for peace, social justice, ending inequity, and—nowadays—environmental issues, among many other issues. That is considered to be the job of Jews, not of their God.

I don’t know if Horowitz was, or even is, a Jew, though his name is suggestive. But he clearly misunderstands tikkun olam.

  17. blf says

If there’s a divinity that can repair the world, why the hell hasn’t it done so already?

They/She/It/He is in the process of doing so! The pesky humans are getting rid of themselves quite neatly — AGW, WMD, overpopulation, theocrats, et al. — so that after a period of reconstruction the Oort Cloud will be opened and Sol’s System can rejoin the civilized Galaxy.

No-one said the repairs would be quick, easy, or not involve other unfortunate damages.

  18. says

But there really is an evil conspiracy to install Satan as ruler of the world, and we should encourage this because the looney conspiracy theories that will occur after these social conservative lunatics in the FBI pickup on planted bogus conspiracy theories from our side, will result in uproar laughter that will have people crying, gripping their sides, and picking themselves off the floor.

Say it with me “There is a Secret Conspiracy we are all aware of…”

    :D

Or a transgender or intersex person, because we both got targeted too in Hitler’s Action T4.

I’m going to have to go with the idea that sounds a lot like the Golden Mean Fallacy, which “moderates” (typically center right thinking they’re center left) engage in to shore up the status quo through appeals to being “moderate” on the bell curve of political opinion; IOW if you have an extremist non bell-curve opinion within the current political paradigm, you must ergo be wrong. This is merely a logical fallacy and nothing more.

Or it could be that non-human intelligences (robots/drones) are using religion as a way to, say, get Humanity to engage in completely irrational political systems like Theocracy and Capitalism, in order to get human beings to wipe ourselves out? Sounds like a fun game if I was such an intelligence; hey, let’s abduct this mentally disturbed person, implant a telepathic chip into their head, pump them full of religion using visions, etc, and then everyone of any sanity will think they’re crazy, and people of religious opinion will believe them, then we’ll pit sectors of these religious idiots against one another, across nations and regions, and we’ll just sit back and laugh as they destroy one another in this real life version of Stratego, and maybe every once in awhile will abduct them and perpetrate non-consensual forms of BDSM involving nurse and doctor apparatus, while telling them BS about free energy.

Of course in this hypothetical scenario, which is actually pretty believable to me, religion is just ‘cockfighting’ or ‘dogfighting’ for non-human intelligences far superior to our own, getting much amusement out of it. Talk about a crush to human ego to figure out they’re aren’t kind and loving peaceful intelligence ‘out there’ somewhere; they’re just assholes like us, but even worse, more dark, more cynical, more evil, but more removed.
