Miss America Brings Out the Racists

I can’t think of an event I care any less about than the Miss America pageant, but I do care that my country harbors so many racist douchenozzles. And when an Indian-American was crowned Miss America over the weekend, they came out of the woodwork like cockroaches. Ignorant moron #1, come on down:

And the Arab wins Miss America. Classic.

Except she isn’t Arab. She’s an American of Indian descent. Arab and Indian are not the same thing, and if you didn’t have a brain full of mush, you’d know that. Stupid asshat #1, Jake Amick, come on down:

How the fuck does a foreigner win miss America? She is a Arab! #idiots

No, you dipshit. She’s not a foreigner.

Weapons grade dumbass #1, Jessica Ayres, come on down:

I swear I’m not racist but this is America.

Wow, you figured out this was America all by yourself, did you? Impressive. Maybe next you’ll figure out that you are, in fact, a racist.

First class fucktard Nate Berard, come on down:

Asian or indian are you kiddin this is america omg

Such eloquence. Racist knuckledragger Wendy Fraser, come on down:

@ABC2020 nice slap in the face to the people of 9-11 how pathetic #missamerica

And joining her is bigoted dickhead Anthony Ridgeway:

#MissAmerica ummm wtf?! Have we forgotten 9/11?

Uh, yeah. You do realize that she’s of Indian descent and is not Muslim, right? And that India had absolutely nothing to do with 9/11? In fact, that she’s an American from freaking New York? No, of course you don’t. You’re morons.

And it just goes on and on and on like this. Sometimes I want the fuck off this planet, or at least out of this country. Seriously, American does not mean “white.” And everyone that has darker skin than you is an Arab. And even if they were, they’re fucking human beings — which is more than I can say for some of these people.

I get tired, too. Still, the internet has done us a great service. It has taught us that making something socially unacceptable doesn’t kill it, it just drives it out of casual, face-to-face conversation. It has shown us that our complacency about race (which is easy enough if you are white and don’t pay attention) is a mistake. It has shown us that we still have a long way to go.

I am old enough to know that things are much, much better than they were, but we still have A LONG WAY TO GO.

None of those hyperlinks seem to work for me except the very first (buzzfeed) one. Either the tweets are gone or the account is suspended. I wonder if those morons took so much heat they retreated?

  3. keithb says

To be fair, there are a lot of muslims in India, they did not all segregate themselves in Pakistan! I even went through a few muslim neigborhoods in my travels there.

I have no idea whether Miss America is muslim or not, I doubt it, since the muslims tend to be lower class.

They’re all human beings. Animals don’t usually have the same capacity for creative dickery.

  5. says

If she was of Arab descent, she would still be an American.
If she was a Muslim, she would still be an American.
If she spoke Arabic, she would still be an American.
If she wore a burqa over her bikini for the swimsuit competition, she would still be a fucking American.

If she was/did any of these things, the tweets from people above would still be racist as all get out.
Since she isn’t/didn’t do any of these things, the people who wrote the tweets above should consider getting brain transplants from corpses, because it could only improve their collective IQ.

Equally obnoxious are the racism AND the bland assumption that only people who look like me and do what I do are actually Americans. As somebody pointed out on one the sites were these racist outbursts were dissected, a majority of Americans do NOT wear tattoos or hunt. I’d add that a majority have never been soldiers or lived in Kansas.

  7. blf says

Gretchen@6, Thank you! I particularly liked your point about the burqa.

I am aware that some burqa-wearing is, if not under actual duress or coercion, is perhaps not entirely voluntary. With that caveat (plus the occasional need to show or reveal the face in certain situations (security checkpoints, court testimony (probably), driving, photo-ID, …), I have no problem with the practice. This is despite living in a country (France) which has more-or-less made it illegal…

  8. gshelley says

And of course, back in 2010, Rima Fakih won the rival (?) Miss USA competion and there was an extremely similar reaction.

  9. says

Hottest Miss America EVER (so far)! (And yes, that comment is perfectly appropriate here — this is a beauty pageant we’re talking about here, not an election.) And if those dried-up, shortsighted, small-minded crackers can’t handle the reality of today’s America, they can bloody well go back to their lilywhite sunset-towns (yes, Salem, MO, I’m looking at you). They will be neither needed nor missed.

I still remember the look of joy at discovering a new fact that Shrub displayed when he announced to the US that India—India!—was the largest democracy in the world.

I hope these jerk and buffoons don’t use any software; Silicon Valley is a highly cosmopolitan place with people from all over the world. (Yeah, I know, they’re talking on the intertubes…)

  11. raven says

As somebody pointed out on one the sites were these racist outbursts were dissected, a majority of Americans do NOT wear tattoos or hunt.

    Or drive pickups with trucknutz.

Or wear baseball caps, camo, and spell cat with a “K”.

  12. John Pieret says

    Here’s another one:

If you’re #Miss America you should have to be American.

She was born in Syracuse, New York. If that is not enough to make you an “American” then this numbnutz is saying (whether s/he knows it or not) that only Native Americans can be Miss America.

  13. says

She’s prolly gonna GAYmarry that little messican who sang the National Anthem at the Spur’s game!! /s

She lives in DeWitt, NY just south of Syracuse. She seems to be a pretty typical young woman for her social milieu.

I don’t get the whole beauty pageant thing, except that it is a way for young women to get some recognition and some lucre.

Beautiful, strong women; why do they scare the fuck out of so many guys?

Patricia Katie Catherine O’Malley wins Miss America Pageant, Patriots flare.
Dateline 1885, New York, New York
After winning the vaunted competition Ms O’Malley, the daughter of immigrants, faced stiff outrage from all sides. Posts received by the newspaper The EnTwitterer read thusly:
    “What’s that potato-eating, freckle-faced, red-headed stepchild so-and-so doing wearing the crown?”
“It’s the Statue of Liberty, not the Statue of Popery!”
“Americans rebelled to get away from these people!”
    “No Irish need apply!”
    And,
    “Harrumph!”
Police forces across this Nation, excluding New York City and Boston, are standing at high alert, ready to crack down on the Irish families when other people set their homes and businesses on fire and obstruct Fire Brigades attempting to extinguish them.
    Further updates as they arrive…

  15. lordshipmayhem says

To those denigrating the choice of Nina Davuluri as Miss America, I quote the great John Winger (Stripes)

We’re all very different people. We’re not Watusi. We’re not Spartans. We’re Americans, with a capital ‘A’, huh? You know what that means? Do ya? That means that our forefathers were kicked out of every decent country in the world. We are the wretched refuse. We’re the underdog. We’re mutts!

So get off your hight horse about American racial purity.

  16. dshetty says

    @keithb
I doubt it, since the muslims tend to be lower class.
Muslims in India, might on average be poorer but most of the people who immigrate to the USA tend to be reasonably well off. But yes in this case she isnt a muslim (not that, that would have made a difference)

Yep. If you follow the buzzfeed link and click through the tweets currently all but two of those accounts are unavailable. They’ve either been deleted, suspended, protected or gutted (account still open, all tweets deleted). Guess those “real ‘merkins” can’t stand the light of public exposure of their own beliefs.

Am I derailing the thread by asking why “beauty pageants” still exist?

    Gretchen (#6) –

Your point is well taken. Though I have no doubt the cretins would have still spewed their garbage if the winner had been an “indian”, a Native American.

    lordshipmayhem (#21) –

That was Art Spiegelman’s portrayal of Americans in his Pulitzer-winning graphic novel, “Maus”, as dogs, a mixed bag of breeds and colours, though some objected to his choice of animals for other nations (e.g. the French, the Poles).

Those danged cunnin’ mooslims. Working hard, savin’ money, moving to ‘Merica and livin’ in one of them Yankee towns called Syracuse (hey – ain’t that one of them ‘spicious-soundin’ furrin’ names anyway? Hmmmm).
Then gettin’ into Miss America pagent and takin’ the place of good wholesome ‘Merican girls like Lurlene.
How dare this cunnin’ mooslim take away a ‘Merican like Lurlene’s chance to be leered at, judged on their appearance and generally treated like a side o’ beef – it’s unMerican, that’s what is.

That was Art Spiegelman’s portrayal of Americans in his Pulitzer-winning graphic novel, “Maus”, as dogs, a mixed bag of breeds and colours, though some objected to his choice of animals for other nations (e.g. the French, the Poles).

Portraying Americans as dogs was brilliant for other reasons as well: we came to Europe as a pack, chasing the cats (Germans) all the way back to their homes, and we saw the world we liberated pretty much as a dog sees it: happy, gung-ho, full of energy and hope, clumsily knocking stuff down everywhere we went, eager to be part of all the interesting new stuff we saw all around us, just as a real dog is eager to join in whatever its human is doing.

And the choice of cats to represent Germans was pretty much inevitable: the Jews were mice, so what else could the people trying to kill them be? It was WW-II retold as “Tom and Jerry,” with the dog and mouse finding common cause against the cat.

As for the other animals, that was probably coming from stereotypes prevalent in Europe at the time.

The Miss America operators must be delighted. I’ll bet their accountants have already calculated how much potential profit this controversy has already generated.

  28. jamessweet says

Yeah, when I encountered that list, I actually felt a strange and disturbing sense of relief when I got to the jerk who made some crack about “Miss 7-11″. Yes, it was vile hateful bigotry, but he both a) managed to correctly identify the ethnicity of the person he was vilifying, and b) successfully apply a hurtful stereotype that is generally associated with that particular ethnicity. Is that really too much to ask from our racist countrymen? I guess so…

  29. caseloweraz says

From the official Miss America history pages:

1984: Vanessa Williams, Syracuse, New York
“An Atlantic City contestant representing New York, Vanessa won both the swimsuit and talent competition, going on to become the first African American to win Miss America and making an unforgettable mark in pageant history.”

    2001: Angela Perez-Baraquio, Honolulu, Hawaii
“Angela Perez Baraquio is the first Asian American and the first teacher to become Miss America.”

(Emphasis is added, but the words in quotes come directly from the Miss America site.)

Many will remember how some nude pictures of Williams were published in Bob Guccione’s Penthouse, after Hugh Hefner’s Playboy turned them down. The scandal led Ms. Williams to give up her title. First runner-up Suzette Charles, another black woman, took over for the remainder of her term of duty.

I had an Iranian roommate in college while the Embassy staff were still being held hostage. He was cornered by some coprophagic racists who charged him with being, well. Iranian. “What? I’m Persian,” he replied. They growled a bit and let him go – didn’t want to hurt an innocent I guess. Idiots.

  31. scienceavenger says

In their continuing quest to make the world safe for white people, Fox tried to make the murder of an Austrialian white student by 3 supposedly black guys the mirror image Trayvon Martin case. Now they do a a story on a beauty queen breaking stereotypes: blonde-haired, blue eyed, Christian Miss Kansas, who (gasp) has tattoos and is in the military. Can’t have that Muslim Injun hogging all the media time when there’s a perfectly good white girl to talk about. To quotemine Ms. Kansas, “bla bla bla”.

  32. says

    @42:

That website for Miss Kansas is, just, wow.

    This:

“I grew up being bullied and feeling self-conscious about the way I looked. My self-esteem and my perspective on life changed when at the age of 10 my dad altered my teeth. I entirely devote my love and passion for dentistry and healthcare philanthropy to those moments.”

    is in a word, odd.

She says in other parts of her self-report that she’s travelled all over the world and has an enviable CV. I just gotta wonder if it’s true–and if it is, I gotta wonder how long it will be before she cracks under the strain of being perfect.

    Her posting of this photo:

    http://misskansas.org/miss-kansas/miss-kansas/meet-miss-kansas

might be a violation of Army regs regarding dress and demeanor. I’m sure that the military is different than it was when I served, but I suspect they still have dress codes and protocol rules.
